Terribly hurt in a Christian church

Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

On these forums I have encountered Protestants who were respectful and intelligent, presenting their faith and debating with us. I have also met the other kind who bash Catholics all the time.

I asked a question on three different threads: “Can anyone tell me of a single Catholic who has written books attacking Protestants”. Noone was able to answer. However, there are plenty (heaps) of books attacking the Catholic Church. In fact, there are people who make a career out of attacking the Catholic Church.

🙂
That says a lot about them AND the people who buy their stuff

Merry Christmas to all!

When things like this happen to me I try to remember that Christ is right there with me and He’s enduring it too. If He can bear it so can I with His healing Grace!

Draw on Him for peace in your heart.

Peace Be With You!

For crying out loud… if you don’t want people bashing your faith in front of you, say, “don’t bash my faith in front of me.”

Makes more sense than sitting there with tears welling in your eyes. People only have the power to offend people to the extent that others - adults - allow them such power. Each adult chooses how they are going to respond to perceived slights.

Your response seems to reflect that you believe she’s crying for herself. She’s crying for the Holy Spirit that is damaged everytime this kind of thing happens. It’s not her own pain she’s dealing with it’s His.

But thank you for your “understanding” and compassion??

You must be extremely lucky to never have been in this situation. Can’t you imagine how incredibly difficult it would be to not only be getting a lot of anti-Catholic rhetoric, but to also be among people she didn’t know in their church?

Yes, to an extent, we allow our feelings to be hurt, but feelings cannot be easily controlled especially for most women.

That was a very uncompassionate thing to say to someone who is hurting!

Please do not judge all protestants by the actions of a few. Many of the more mainstream Protestant Churchs are not Anti Catholic. This attitude seems to mainly come from the non denoms. I’m sorry you had to endure that, and believe me as a protestant it drives me nuts when people bash the Catholic Church on false information. If you are going to critique something, learn about it first.

On that note I have never come across a general anti protestant book, but there is a lot of hostility towards protestants that comes out of the Catholic Church as well.

Wouldn’t it be great if all side could really work productivly towards Christian Unity

I told them then that I was Catholic and they didn’t even flinch except that they only ignored me more. It was awful.
To me this is the really telling part of your story.

I can understand how they might have said what they said to each other, if they thought no one could hear them.

But to not even pretend to be embarrassed, and apologize when you called them on it, shows that they had incredibly bad manners.

Stop it!
Get out of your alternate reality for just one minute.

Can I suggest that we all just stop now? This has quickly gone away from the topic and only stands to cause more people injured feelings.

Snow doesn’t need to be senticised to these things because he is unlikely to experience it since Catholics are not known to treat Protestants and other non-Catholics badly.

Sure, here on the forums we Catholics react to the bashing we get by giving tit for tat. In all my life I have never heard of an incidance of Protestant bashing by Catholics.

This is very telling I would say.

Protestants are continually attacked here on this forum?? Really?

No Hisalone, I have read your posting on different forums. I know exactly what you are about.

One cannot discourse with you. You are stubborn, you never pay attention to what Catholics say. I have read many postings where different individuals have respectfully responded to your comments which are always vicious and anti. Always. They do their best to give clear explanations of the Catholic faith and you continue the attack. I know what I am talking about. I just have to see your name to know exactly what to expect.

Sure out of frustration there have been individuals, myself included, who have responded strongly - just as I am doing now. You are not a reasonable person - one cannot reason with you.

I continue to pray for all on CAF and I hope that you will reflect, ponder and pray during this Christmas. Take a good look at yourself.

May God bless you

(Edited)

Cinette, another aspect I have noticed is that some posters cannot distinguish between questioning the doctrine of a faith and a personal attack. If I question the basis of a belief, I am not attacking the person who has that belief, I am questioning the belief itself. When a person cannot distinguish between the two, when they personalize everything, they bear the responsibility, the “attack” belongs to them.

Having said that, I submit that we could all be more charitable, and a great deal of good could come from just pondering and praying more before we speak, or type. Some may believe that a quick comeback makes them appear clever. But if they come here to CAF, or study their faith, with a view towards enabling themselves to take shots at others, and make the witty remark, they are failing in any effort to follow Jesus.

Cinette virtually every thread started by JimmyB is offensive. I guess you have never noticed that even though others have complained.

Cinette,

Seriously I hate to break it to you but there are intollerant and ignorant people in every faith and every denom. There just are.

I am protestant, and I am married to a Catholic. I have expirenced and continue to expirence negative and hostile attitudes from many Catholics I encounter. It’s awful, it’s mean, it ain’t pretty, but it is there. Believe me when you get the “You’re Lutheran (followed by look of horror), you are planning to raise your kids Catholic right” two seconds after you meet someone…followed by an explanation of how your kids (we don’t actually have any kids right now, but that is apparently beside the point to them) will be damned if they aren’t raised Catholic or if they even see something remotely protestant, it really make you feel welcome and warm and fuzzy inside.

That being said…there are a lot of great Catholics, Protestants, non denoms out there who are wonderful people and wonderful Christians. So I tend to take the jerks on all sides as just that jerks, most who are uneducated about not only the faith they are bashing but there own as well. I ignore them and move on, but I would never pretend that my church couldn’t possibly have any of them.

MelanieAnne -

You are so right! Yes, we should all pause before posting. Maybe even walk away and pray before responding.

I have NEVER been in an argument or confrontation regarding religion - ever. I suppose it is the culture. Here in South Africa we tend to be very careful and most times we do not discuss religion. This is not a good thing because we need to debate. But we need to be civil.

How can a person who is Christian not treat the other with love and respect. We can disagree but there must always be charity and respect.

Your suggestion of a PAUSE is vital. I was on a very interesting thread with really good participants. At one time there was some tension but most times it was a truly wonderful exchange. I then felt that there was information overload and a real need to stop and reflect. And that is what happened.

Its like seeds - you plant, fertilise the ground, water and wait…time is a vital ingredient. We need to reflect.

I have said it 100s of times - I really appreciate Protestants because they keep me on my toes.

Alix - I have read your posting also and you sound like a very level headed person. I am confident that you will overcome any difficulty since you are mature. anyway, I will always continue to pray for CAF and all the people on it.

May you all have a Blessed and Joyous Christmas.
Hope we all love each other MORE in 2009

I think I should set the record straight - what I said above is true. I have never had confrontations BUT here on CAF because of the anonymity I got bold and gave tit for tat when Protestants like Hisalone got in my way.

Having said that I do not hold any grudges against Hisaline (although at times I could have throttled him).

Dear Hisalone - I look forward to encountering you on CAF again next year. Hope you will be more open and sober (not talking about alchohol here). It would be nice to have a good debate where we can both be challenged and advance. I am a revert and am learning more about my faith all the time.

So Hisalone - I hope that next year we will be friends. May your Christmas be blessed and joyous.

Cheers
Cinette:)

Yeah - I’m thinking that the Holy Spirit, the omnipotent God, doesn’t get harmed too much when people make insensitive remarks about Catholics.

I’m am not lucky to have never been in such a situation. I, on occasion, have heard people say unkind things about my faith - not too frequently in person, much more frequently on this Catholic message board… cowards are emboldened by the internet… but, when someone does say something - I, any adult, has three choices:
  1. Not like enough to assert that such comments are inappropriate and unwelcome. Except with jerks raised in a barn - that works every time.
  2. Not care what other’s think. My, any adult’s, self-esteem, is driven from doing esteemable things, not from what other people think.
  3. Care a little but not enough to say anything or dwell on it.
Of course there is another option but deciding to be or act wounded because other’s don’t share your opinions is not a very good choice.
