Harry Kane is saying ‘They played well, made it difficult for us. It’s hard to out your finger on what went wrong.’
They will be welcomed home with gratitude .Is the fever pitch of the excitement due to this being a young team that people did not expect so much of? That they and their coach came out of nowhere to overachieve? And what will the letdown be like if they lose the semi-final to Croatia or the final to France? It must be a crushing responsibility to play on that team.
I hope so. My son who is a big soccer fan now wants to make Tottenham his team, since so many of the national team players - especially Deli Alli - play there. They will be welcomed home with gratitude .
Yes a young team who had respect for each other and for the manager Graham Southgate .
This rubbed off on to the people here .
Plus they went further than other England teams for quite a while .
The future is with them
Yes, sometimes during this World Cup I began supporting one side theoretically until the other side won me over with their elan and resilience. I didn’t quite get there with Russia, but almost.Yes, when Russia got that late goal and made it to the penalties I was elated. They played so hard it was really inspiring. I was hoping England would do the same. I am not a fan of Croatia, full disclosure. But I think they are on a mission and I have to admit they could very well be the best team standing when it is all over. I am behind France 1000% for what good it will do. We will see on Sunday I guess…I had a feeling Croatia would take England down.
For what it’s worth, I think a lot of people overseas wanted England to ‘bring it home.’ I didn’t start the tournament rooting for them, but I’m more than a little sad to see their journey end here. Especially since they had the early lead. That was painful for me to watch!
Ah well.
Like Brazil for me! I know how you feel! That was painful for me to watch!
You’re doing a good job putting it in perspective. Perhaps like Germany over the last few World Cups you can build from here and take it all.Maybe. I’m abroad right now and everyone around me was supporting Croatia (I’m not in Croatia). I think no one was expecting England to do this well, certainly I wasn’t. It’s a good result even if it’s not the one we wanted.
I can only hope! You’re doing a good job putting it in perspective. Perhaps like Germany over the last few World Cups you can build from here and take it all.
They nearly did this time. I didn’t watch the game (I’m at work) just followed a summary online but I don’t think Croatia is that much better than England. As for the Premier League a lot of their biggest stars (Mohamed Salah etc.) aren’t necessarily English. In fact I get the distinct impression the guys on this team came a bit out of nowhere - unlike the previous World Cup squads stocked with the Beckhams and Rooneys. Now they’re all household names so there’s that as a consolation prize.Yep, true to form, the first game I really commit to England, open heart, open mind…they lose. Oh well. I agree with the comments that this younger new fresher England team did a lot for England as a national side. They have a bright future. But I still cannot for the life of me understand why England can have the best league in the world - the EPL - and not put together a winning team, I mean a top notch team. Patience, patience. And speaking objectively if Croatia is the best team they should win it. Fair is fair. Win it all I mean. I do hope France can make that not happen though. It has been such a great Cup!!
May they prevail on Sunday (though I wouldn’t be surprised if these crafty Croatians sneak a win past them).Agreed, they seemed to come from nowhere and yes the EPL is stacked with French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.compared to home talent. Though I believe most native born English players play in England. (could be wrong on that) It was funny watching France/Belgium. So much of the French team plays in the EPL, Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City, etc. At least it is helping French skills…they looked great.
