I don’t claim to be an expert on the scene but from what I gather,
  • K-on has replaced Haruhi in moeblobness. (Mio Akiyama is the reigning queen of Moe)
Dvd Sales has also been up
Speaking of which, has anyone seen “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimya” Season 2 yet? If so, is it any good?
Monster - Syfy’s english dub is nearing the best part of the series 😃
I’ve only seen this on and off, mostly since CN trained me to watch anime only on Saturdays, but what I’ve seen is good.

Well I know one anime to stay away from. Afro Samurai. Even Lost Wanderer can agree with me on this one.

Back here, ha!
Ain’t it ironic that I’m in Japan, yet know next to nil about what is going on with anime fandom today, what series are popping up, etc. I guess I’m under the rock for too long, eh? 😛
Hey, I know you’re not into the genre like we are but I have a few questions to ask.
  1. Is japan fed up with all the fansubs going on or do they allow some for the sake of attracting new viewers and fans?
  2. Is Ginga Densetsu Weed ever gonna be translated to english? I think there is one but I also think that one was by fans.

Season 2 had 28 episodes overall, 14 of which were re-airings of the first season. 8 episodes in the second season also comprised the endless eight saga wherein Kyoani trolled the fans as they showed 8 episodes of the same sequence of events with only miniscule(sometimes negligible) changes, which angered the fandom. So in summary, the second season has only 6 episodes of new content. Imagine the fandom having to anticipate the next few shows week after week only to find out they’re watching the same freakin’ thing. Hahahaha, good thing i’m not a Haruhi Fan.

Well, ever since I’ve become a koukousei I ain’t have enough spare time in my hands. :o

Well, officially of course fansubbing is illegal in countries that subscribe to the Berne Convention - Japan being one of them - as it constitutes copyright infringement, to the best of my knowledge. Though, because as you have said I’m not totally deep into anime I don’t have much knowlege of how Japanese anime fans think of foreign guys putting subtitles.

Pardon the rather cruddy translation but here’s an article that might be of interest (original here).

One of the interesting things though is that fansubbing is kinda more of a phenomenon in other countries than here in Japan (I think it’s related to the anime boom in other countries), though ‘unofficial’ subtitling of foreign products is of course not unknown - fansubbing has even got its own article in the Japanese wikipedia for pete’s sake (still, I’m estimating that at least 70% of that article is made up of describing fansubbing in other countries…🤷)

Off-topic: I’ll admit that I’m really into that Japanese sub of Yugioh Abridged (a fansub of a fanvid?). The translator really has some sense - and the people in Niconico can sometimes come up with something funny. Not always of course, but well, yeah. And finally, since I was talking about Yugioh: a Japanese website where they have loads of information about the infamous 4Kids dub and various sundries.

Ironically enough, there are copies of the manga in the bookshelves beside where I’m sitting right now. AFAIK, there are no plans for the anime series (which I haven’t watched yet) but if you’re talking about the manga, the all-knowing wikipedia says that:

The manga was licensed for an English language release by ComicsOne. Three volumes were released on April 1, 2001 under the shortened name Weed before ComicsOne quietly canceled the series due to low sales. All three volumes are now out-of-print. In 2004, ComicsOne went out of business and DrMaster acquired all of the company’s manga licenses. However, DrMaster did not chose to continue the Ginga Legend Weed series. Currently, the license to translate Ginga Legend Weed are up to be sold to a manga company that wants it.

Unfortunately I am. It’s stuff like this that’s exactly my reason why I wish I could just get my hands on the light novel translations. Grrr!! >_<;;
I have a copy of Suzumiya Haruhi no Bunretsu, but I haven’t got around to reading it from cover to cover yet. (^_^;)

Speaking of Yu-Gi-Oh!… I have a confession to make. My fellow brothers and sisters of the anime loving community, forgive me for I have given into temptation and fallen…

I’ve started watching Yu-Gi-Oh! 5ds. T_T

You’re lucky you can even read that stuff man!! D’8

Thanks. I did find out something intersting… The japanese version DVD’s of the anime (at least I think) did have english subtitles of their own it shouldn’t be a fansub after all.

However, since I am unable to get my hands on the dvd’s the only way to watch it is on the internet, and that is illegal because the people who posted have no right to do that. I’ve pretty much abandoned hope of seeing it.

Although I already read that thanks anyways. I don’t know why but something about that show really catches my attention.

No offense man but I’ve seen one of the original anime DVDs you’re talking about once tested in one of the rare shops that sold them. I believe it’s common knowledge that since a majority of Japanese have poor English skills (no offense patrick, you’re an exception :o), any subtitles from them might as well have been scrapped and the money saved would’ve gone to another feature.

I got my last part of R1 in the mail. Disc five skips more than a championship double-dutch tournament >>

SO, what’s the current conversation?

Nothing much really.
On the other hand, I’m toying with a fanfiction plot bunny. 😛

subtitles on an original? That’s strange to hear…for an R2 original in japan
You might be referring to a Hongkong or a Taiwan R3 DVDs, most of these have english subs (more often than not poorly translated).

That sucks big time. Did you have a good return policy with DVD? Hopefully you can return it without any further hassle.

:hmmm: Brings me to the thought of how the western based *anime distribution industry *is dying a slow and painful death (ADV for example got bankrupt)… and how we (as non-japanese anime consumers and fans) are in a cloudy yet interesting situation in this transition time. Oh well, 🤷, in business practices as well as life, you got to adapt/change or die.

What do you mean?

Subtitles from Japanese DVDs suck. There, plain and simple. 😛
Well I still wanna watch. I’ve seen the first episode on the web although I really shouldn’t have due to copyrights. But it did catch my eye. Besides it would probably be better than a dub anyway.

It has a return policvy, but OI’m not gonna bother. It came in my limited edition set, and while it does skip, it’s not like I haven’t seen those episodes 3 times already XD

ADV…Geneon went coput too in the US, right?

Yes, they did but some of their title were picked up by Funianimation. Why do you guys think the US license companies are dying off? I’d hate to never get legit anime again. :crying:
