Yeah well if you like to read into things and have your own interpretation, that’s fine by me. I’m actually quite fond of putting forth reader-oriented theories in fiction myself.

Just respect the fact that we’re capable of reading meaning into it as well, even if it does differ from your understanding of a film.
I don’t say the themes you mentioned are NOT there—just that they are not (by far) the only ones.

@ Suni: Once again, I invite you to actually read my posts. I can sometimes tell when the sub differs from the actual Japanese words. That’s all I said - no more and no less.
I did read your post, and mention that issue, when I said that the dialogue is often changed in dubs. I’m not trying to pick a fight or anything, but you seem very overly defensive.

And yeah, Nausicaa is pretty clearly a Christ figure, I picked up on that rather early in the movie…
I never said that the environmentalist themes where the only themes in Miyazaki’s work, just that they’re there, and he’s confirmed that they’re there.

Well, again, I’m not saying they aren’t there, but I do see other layers.

My favorite is still Spirited Away, followed closely by Omoide Poro Poro (not really a fantasy, but if you love a look into daily Japanese life as much as I do, it’s the best), Whispers of the Heart/Mimi wo Sumaseba (similar) and Kiki’s Delivery Service.

It’s funny but Bleach and Ichigo do not compare well to Yuu Yuu Hakusho and Urameshi Yuusuke, even though both are serious fighters. Ichigo seems psychotically violent even in the first ep while YYH manages to arouse sympathy for Yuusuke, even though he’s a self-styled punk and calls himself ‘the number-one delinquent’ of his high school.

Maybe it’s because we can see Yuusuke through Keiko’s eyes, and she knows the truth about him.
If you’ve still only seen the first episode of Bleach, then I can understand why you would have that impression. However it doesn’t take much longer into the series (something like 3 or 4 more episodes at the VERY most I’m pretty sure) before Ichigo quickly and inexplicably turns a complete 180. Suddenly he goes from a stock “high school punk” to the typical benevolent knight in shining armor persona, even to a sickening and almost self-parodying degree.

For example there’s one fight he’s in that basically parallels Yuusuke vs Sensui in that when things looked bad “someone else” took control of his body and totally pwns the enemy… BUT in this case not only does Ichigo get pissed off about his fight getting stolen when he regains consciousness, he also notices that during his trance he cut the enemy’s arm off so he asks the enemy to cut off his own arm in return so that it will be a fair fight. Keep in mind also that this enemy is pure evil with no hope of changing and Ichigo is the only thing standing between him and two of his close friends who stand there helplessly watching.

His character is as bland and one-dimensional as they come, but I really like how a lot of the other characters’ personalities and backgrounds are detailed and woven together so that more than makes up for it with me. 🙂

Speaking of Bleach, I’m sad to announce that it has now officially jumped the shark. It’s always sad when a manga/anime so young and with so much potential dies this early. The anime series (besides fillers) is still worth watching so far as they haven’t gotten to the point where the manga committed hara kiri on itself, but now as a result the remaining good episodes are numbered. 😦

Bleach jumped the shark years ago. 🤷

Ehh… It’s shonen. It’s a long running shonen.
I think it jumped the shark awhile back.
Like, a long while back…

I really prefer a series that ends early with an intact plotline, than one that drags on for the sake of more money.

Shorter series usually involve writers who… y’know… can write. xD;;

There’s only a handful of animes I’ve been able to get into over the years.

Fist of the North Star is my absolute favorite. At least, the first series, through the end of the Raoh arc. I never could get into FOTNS2. After getting so attached to characters like Toki, Rei, Souther and Fudoh, guys like Falco and Ein just seemed to lack depth.

Fullmetal Alchemist was pretty good. Haven’t seen the Brotherhood series yet, but it sounds like something I’d enjoy.

And I loved Cowboy Bebop, as well as Samurai Champloo.

I think I should clarify this… I know it used a lot of fillers and dragged things out with pointless tangents time after time, but since there were so many things left unrevealed and with all the characters the show still had a lot of potential to redeem itself, I kept giving it a chance. Now though it’s clear to me with this recently started new manga “arc” that the author just isn’t even trying. 🤷

I forgot to comment on this earlier… I’ve seen the original anime and liked it, but yeah the Brotherhood series is MUCH better! 👍 It actually stays true to the manga whereas apparently the first anime rushed a lot of plotlines and twisted a few things around pretty badly.

Heh… It feels, to me at least, that said author has just been trolling his readers for awhile now. But yeah… I know what you mean there.

atiqtuq.com/ Catholic manga–from Canada, I think.

BTW You guys turned me on to Full Metal Alchemist again. It’s amazing how they mix wacky manga/anime humor with drama (some very sad).

Reminds me of the art of this: google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=Manga+Bible&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=1551113353914210436&ei=8w7aTINKjaiwA-7r-d4H&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDAQ8wIwAg#

I never really understand the need to call everything “manga”, though.
If it’s not a japanese comic, than why call it manga? I’d rather hear it referred to as a comic… Shine some more light of American and Canadian comics, ya know.

But anyway, I haven’t read either of them, but I think I might prefer the style of this…

theartofsiku.com/THE%20MANGA%20BIBLE%20HOME/THE_MANGA_BIBLE_HOME.htm

There’s a raw sketchiness to it that really makes it stand out, as apposed to just trying to copy a generic manga style.

Thanks! I think the illustration is more like manga than Western-style comics. There’s probably more to manga than the art that makes it different.

I personally think style is just one factor but yeah, if you couple that with a more solid story, I’d prefer calling it manga.

Vegeta’s seasoning concoctions will never beat Goku’s seasoning, even if he achieves a Super-Season level (sorry for the bad DBZ pun).

There’s a certain style we associate with manga, the big eyes, small nose and mouth, etc…
Although that’s generally just a generic “manga” style… Since manga just means comic in japanese, it’s not really that art style… I’ve seen a lot of variation with japanese manga…
But alot of original english language manga seems to have very similar art styles, copying the generic “manga” style that you see in mainstream anime.

But, on other subjects… VEGETA, WHAT DOES THE SCOUTER SAY ABOUT YOUR SEASONIN-

You know, I should stop while I’m ahead. xD

Vegeta got angry after Goku left the world for good, having produced the best spices when not fighting the super-villains. Little did he know Goku’s dirty secret: the seasoning was made of The Spice Boys when synthetic dragonballs brought out his pre-head-bumped Seiyan wickedness, before his good version split with the personification of it and defeated it. Yes. We Americans got the ripped-off-from-Superman 3 edited version of the series that left out this story arc.

Only got into Anime the other day…

But currently watching Bleach and its awesome! Skipping all the fillers obviously 😃
was watching Death Note but stopped for some time now, it started getting a bit meh.

Might start watching DGrayman, Naruto and One Piece after I finish Bleach 🙂
