Maybe that’s the problem. People have come to except the fact that the world is going to the pit in a hog cart. Catholics think that abortion and homosexual unions are acceptable too. Do you really wanna accept stuff like that? Remember Sodom and Gommorah?
1.) You’re comparing apples to oranges. A few skimpy shots is nowhere near as grave as innocent murder. Stuff like Full Metal Alchemist can tell ya that. My point is, lighten up! It’s just a cartoon. It’s not trash like Playboy who gravely exploit both their clients and employees.

2.) A good critic knows how to weigh pros and cons. Your method is that of a moralist Shallow Hal.
Look everyone, I struggle with sexual sins, alright? I’d like an anime that won’t tempt me. You guys understand now?
The problem is you come off as trying to act like your some kind of example. Like exoflare said, we don’t suffer scrupulosity like you do. Don’t push it on others like its a virtue. If you wanna avoid that stuff, be my guest but just don’t act like you’re above us or something.

Immodesty is always bad, even for those not weak to looking at it. Even the elite can fall from grace, but it can be very gradual at the speed even the elect can’t notice till an incident happens. I’d say cartoons have no effect, but some really get into hentai, XXX manga, I think. Pride and/or anger and/or an interest in immodesty can be stimulated by the passions being stimulated can be the enabler to falling to it.

Seeing as I frequent the anime community as much as the Catholic community, I’ve seen those who are into hentai. Frankly, the junk they watch makes me wanna put a gun to my head. There’s no plot, hardly any character development, just mindless sex. Believe me, that’s the difference between a shounen with only just a bit of ecchi (Bleach) and that hentai trash. Any “good” hentai out there that happens to have none of the trashy aspects always ends up getting a non-pornographic version (e.g. Fate/Stay Night).

Yeah I think that’s the guy. It’s not the fact that he’s wearing a cross on his wrist that bothers me. I’ve worn rosary beads on my wrist (is that ok to do?) but rather that he seems to be the bad guy. Why is it that the bad guys are the ones who wear crosses?
Ishida is actually a good guy, a survivor when our current good guys–the shinigami–annihilated his race. He’s more of a foil for the shonen hero, Ichigo.

If you want to see Catholics portrayed as the bad guys, see Hellsing but even they aren’t that bad as compared to the new regime of Nazis. Even in Trinity Blood where they are nuns, priests and a pope, you can’t really say that these are true examples of Catholicism but rather a fantasy version of Catholicism. The Vatican doesn’t have an Iscariot organization in charge of killing the undead and heretics (Hellsing) or secretly protecting us from vampire-like creatures (Trinity Blood). These series aren’t a slice of life stories but Catholicism is used as a vehicle for our romanticized protagonists, heirs to Christian themed* Evangelion*.

Kon? Yeah, he always jumps after women when he sees their breasts. Then, there’s the lesbian. There’s plenty of big breastsa on the show, maybe because their women are seen, maybe by them, as being underdeveloped in that area.
I view it as exaggerated stereotypes–a female equivalent to GAR . Not that women like Rukia are less feminine but Yourichi isn’t rooted in reality, she transforms to a cat after all.

Uhhh…

Come on dude, cut me some slack. Shouldn’t you be glad someone has a stance against immorality?

I do. I commend you. The world will try to sway you, but I am glad you aren’t listening.

One of the reasons we’re probably not going to get Ranma 1/2 is that even in the first ep it seems like waaay too much fanservice.

They will mock me for this, too. I’m past caring.

I’m also getting a little tired of going out of my way to find things I thought someone might like and then being ignored.

Thanks buddy.

It’s like most things. Anime can, for some, be the near occasion of sin. Most of it has something immoral. Most I can watch with no problem, some I can’t.

If you are looking for a good fun anime that doesn’t cater to the usual fan service and immoralities, try Azumanga Daioh. It is one of my favorites!

Thanks. What about some of Hayao Miyazaki’s stuff like Princess Mononoke? Anyone see that one? Ponyo seems to kiddish for me.

What about Rave Master?

Given your preferences? You better get ready to limit yourself to mostly kiddish stuff. Princess Mononoke’s good but chances are you might judge it the same way you judged Yu-Gi-Oh!. It’s themed around Shintoism after all and is not shy of using such imagery.

And Rave Master? You better forget about that one. I love it along with a lot other of Mashima Hiro’s works (e.g. .Monster Hunter Orage, Fairy Tail). I doubt you would since you to anime like that is like milk products to a lactose-intolerant. You’re free to avoid something you can’t take but don’t think everyone has to deprive themselves for your sake.

Please ignore those who try to mock your sensibilities and even make snide, bitter remarks about it. The world will always try to drag Christians down, and has done since He walked among us in the Flesh.

I don’t know Rave Master, but Miyazaki’s wonderful. I still need to get a copy of Ponyo!

Princess Mononoke has a fair amount of fight violence in it, but given how squeamish I am, it was tolerable even for me. And it was my first Miyazaki film. After that I had to get them all.

I didn’t notice or care about the Shintoism aspect; to me it was just a wonderful fairy tale.

If you are at all interested in modern Japanese life, Omoide Poro Poro is great.

I don’t mind some violence. Just as long as it’s not like afro samurai. LOTR has it’s fair share of violence despite it’s catholic background. If you really don’t like violence you may not like LOTR. There’s some gore in these movies and ironically Aragorn, the christ-like figure was the one behind most of it. Although the gore may have been Mr. Jackson’s doing.

Anyway thanks.

EW, I like Monoke but my favorite has to be Howl’s Moving Castle. That movie made me believe in love again.

Wanderer, I’m liking Monster more. Even though I missed the first half of the episodes aside from the pilot. It’s almost a commentary on how we treat children, the government, and nature vs. nurture. Ambitious.

Well, this thread is already on page 36; but for some reason I feel obligated to announce my favorite anime anyway. Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Me and my brother watch full metal because Ed and Al’s brotherly bond reminds us of our own. -We’re both really philisophical. Once, my brother asked “Jared, would you ever sacrafice your arm and leg to attach my soul to a suit of armor?” My answer, “Of course I would.” 🙂

Based on what you’ve posted, I don’t think you would have any problems with Princess Mononoke. You might also enjoy Whisper of the Heart and Spirited Away, both Miyazaki classics. Another Miyazaki film, one I like a lot but much lighter fair, was Pom Poko!

What is Miyazaki’s deal about witches, though? I know they don’t have the truth about “white” magic being demonic (as in “Kiki’s…” and “Spirited Away”, but I don’t get the obsession.
When will there be an arc about Ichigo's father, I wonder? I'm tired of arcs, in general, and want to see the big final showdown, but, like the one about how the Vizerds came to be, this would make a good back story. Is the real dad in training and his gi guy is the wacky father?

Obsession?

It’s a FAIRY TALE. And that was ONE film (Kiki) out of many.

If fairy tales are good enough for Chesterton, they’re good enough for me.

EW—I own the LOTR series. I kind of enjoyed it, with reservations.

The violence made me look away once or twice, but my problem with that film isn’t fight scenes but Jackson’s lack of understanding of Catholic themes and beliefs. I HATE what he did to Faramir!

It speaks of animal spirits and we all know about Miyazaki’s tendency to insert themes of war and environmentalism in a lot of his films.

If you have issues with that, then Mononoke is definitely not for you. That movie has decapitation, loss of limbs, and tons of blood.

Strangely enough though, it’s done very tastefully and is not like moronic gore fests like Afro Samurai.

Lord of the Rings is kinda OT in this thread but care to elaborate on that?

With regards to the fight scenes I never thought that it was too violent. It’s war and they were fighting against an overwhelming evil force so it’s reasonable to fight to the death. I’ve seen the trilogy thrice already, once in the cinema, once with the DVDs and once with the extended version DVDs and I never thought that violence was excessive, not in the same light as stylistically violent movies (Tarantino movies for example) and I’ve seen a good number of these kind of movies.
If I recall correctly the parts where violence was cinematically enhanced by the filmmakers was Boromir’s last stand against the Uruk-hai and Denethor II sending out his son Faramir on a suicide mission to Osgiliath. However, IMO both scenes added to the drama in the story so It was well justified.
Anyway, to each his own I guess. In retrospect though the fact that majority of what they were fighting against were ring-wraiths, orcs and other non-human beings made it easier for me to cheer for the good guys to mow down the bad guys.
