This is but one reason why I hate, hate, hate remakes. The original was FINE. I think someone needed to mess with it and remove the clearly Catholic content.

I’m writing an analysis of the series. The ORIGINAL one.
Technically speaking while FMA Brotherhood is a “remake” (or perhaps a better term would be alternate version) of the original anime, it adheres to the manga storyline 99% (if not 100%) of the time. The reason being is that when the original FMA anime was released, the manga had not yet been completed; thus, the directors went off and did their own thing (with permission from Hiromu Arakawa, of course). Then when the manga was completed, everybody got back together and did Brotherhood.

That being said, I still prefer the original anime; although technically speaking I haven’t seen Brotherhood yet ^^;

Well I was broswing through anime some time ago looking for refrences to practice drawing with and I found this. I was like “No way! Awesome!” What do you think?

At first I was all like, “OHHH YEAH!” Cue Kool Aid Man crashing through the wall

However as I’ve grown older (and hopefully more wiser) and have explored more anime (and literature in general), I can honestly say that it just seems gimmicky to me. Sure, the art may be great, but don’t we have enough “Bible versions for [enter group here]” already? Just my :twocents:

Hey any way to get Jesus’s message across to the masses, as long as it’s portrayed correctly works for me.

Although the creator denies that it has Christian themes, I think Full Metal Alchemist is a great anime for Christian fans to watch. It has villains patterned and named after the Seven Deadly Sins. And yes, there is an evil priest in the story, but I don’t consider that a commentary on Christianity, just an example of how religion can be used to manipulate people.
I should also point out that quite a few VA’s on dubs have professed that they are Christians: Vic Mignogna, (Edward Elric on FullMetal Alchemist) and Johnny Yong Bosch (Vash the Stampede on Trigun, Adam Park on Power Rangers, Lelouch from Code Geass) for starters.

You know I agree!

If you want a great example of a perfect Catholic knight, filled with love and forgiveness, look at Alphonse Elric. He even forgives his enemies and has a hand in showing them the path to redemption.

No matter what the manga-ka’s claim—God really does work in mysterious ways.

I don’t know if is better to open a new thread, but… how to deal with Catholic yaoi/yuri/ecchi fans?

The recent days I have found some people like that.

There are some recommendations to have in mind when presenting them the Church doctrines about these themes?

I have linked the sixth commandment section of the Catechism, and reminding them what the Bible has to say about that, and about the sin of scandal, etc.

Blessings !!!

🙂

I don’t know about yaoi/yuri other than I find them a nice source of parody but when it comes to ecchi, it’s actually a very complicated issue. You might as well start debating about sexual themes/imagery in all mediums of art and literature.

Hentai on the other hand, well that’s more of a non-negotiable and can personally verify that there’s no excuse to save you there. (That and about 99% of hentai is pointless, sex-centered garbage anyways.)

I think there are two issues, first, lust, and second, for people in sites like deviantart, forums or blogs, scandal.

And yes, obviously that applies to all art mediums. I think the Church doctrine is very clear about these themes.

The hentai issue is more easy, yes. But some of the people I was speaking to, don’t see that as a evil in the level of porn. But, in fact, is the same sin, don’t matter if is drawn or with real people. Is a offense against the sixth commandment.

Blessings !!!

The problem arises when you take into account that lust is ultimately within the control of the viewer. You also have to take into consideration intent and context.

Now I’ve seen some ecchi manga that’s just over the top. On the other hand, I’ve seen just as many that know how to deploy the themes well (be it in the form of comedy or realism).

You’d have to be careful in making statements like this as they may work against you (especially when your opponent is aware of, for instance, the nude Renaissance paintings found in the Vatican museums).

Agreed that ultimately, hentai reduces your mind to that of a sex-crazed animal much like porn. However, unless you make that the ONLY reason for why they are both equal sins, you’re going to have trouble arguing with people who insist that one is not as bad as the other.

I have to admit, one can say that real porn is of a ‘worse degree’ since it exploits more people, involves real sex acts, and arguably has a wider grip on the population. Hentai doesn’t really have a strong foothold in that granted that it uses completely fictional characters, fictional bodies, and some of the disturbing things I’ve seen look too revolting to even be possible.

However, such an argument is moot in the fact that it still reduces your mind to lust. It was built for that. In fact, the 1% of hentai that I can’t criticize for being tasteless trash are in fact hentai that can actually do away with the sex. In other words, they are hentai that didn’t have to be hentai in the first place.

One big example: Fate/Stay Night. It started as a hentai game but it managed to move on to a franchise that no longer requires too much graphic displays of sex. It’s been granted a clean version without any serious effects on the plot.

There is a difference between the intent of the Vatican paintings and a yuri or yaoi picture. One, is art, the other, fuel for lust.

Plus the homosexuality issue. And again, more scandal, because they’re Catholics… is really disturbing to see religious pictures and yaoi/yuri or ecchi in the same site.

Blessings !!!

Before I tell you my impressions of it, please tell me whether you consideraOuran Host Club (is that the whole name? I’ve only watched one ep) as ‘hentai’ or what.

I was speaking of ‘ecchi’ anime, not yaoi/yuri. You’re going to have to talk to someone else about those.

:rotfl: Hardly!!! (Not even the twins count it worthy of condemnation. ;))

OK—I laughed so hard I think I put my back out. And it’s so fast-paced (subtitled version) that I missed a LOT. Still:

Bleach, Fullmetal, Durarara, Cowboy Bebop, and I kind of like Ghost in the Shell. I am not being racist when I say this but in Japan, they create a lot of anime that is just sickening and could not even get on to United States television.

Racist? It’s not racist…just typical Japanese for you. LOL Just kidding! I still like DBZ. I don’t care what anyone says. It still makes me laugh. I like their humor (though I don’t get many of the inside raunchier jokes). American action animated tv shows seem to be getting there with Iron Man and the new Transformers series. I don’t care how close it sticks to the manga, I need a good innocent laugh for adults and it’s hard to find on TV in the US. The post-Bleach credits piece alone is great! Like Family Guy, they just goof with the traditional format of the kind of show they are making.

BTW, for speed demons, it would be funny to have a Captain Zaraki Auto Club sticker made with him driving like a madman (a little self reflexive humor for us leadfeet). Unknowing drivers might just think he’s a weird pirate, though.

I’m not as much into anime as I used to be. I grew up watching Sailor Moon, Digimon, Cardcaptors, and Pokemon, and I loved them all (although, as a kid, I didn’t understand the concept of “bad dubbing” lol). I think it’s a shame that it’s assumed that because it’s a “cartoon”, it’s for kids, which isn’t the case in Japan.

I have “Trinity Blood” on DVD, and I’m currently in the middle of season two of “Hell Girl”, Japanese horror in general is very trippy, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like it or not, but it’s great! I recently saw a trailer for “Kuroshitsuji” (“Black Butler”) and I have a friend that raves about it so I might check it out.

Transformers Prime!

I like that series too.

Blessings!

You should keep watching. There’s more! 👍 Personally, my favorite funny moments always involve an overreacting Tamaki. 😛
