I am in Australia, and it is so hard to find a Bible that contains the Apocrypha! It’s annoying, lol, how come it isn’t in the Bible to begin with? Even finding separate book of Apocrypha is not easy to find - if they exist.

Can someone enlighten a newbie? 😃

It’s only going to be in a Catholic Bible.

Theres:
Douay Rheims
Revised Standard (RSV)
Revised Standard 2nd Edition
New American Bible (NAB)
Jerusalem Bible

Douay Rheims seems to be the most popular. My mom has the NAB and it’s not hard to read. I have the Oxford Annotated Bible, which is New Revised Standard version. I find the way it’s edited to be rather difficult to read though. Right now i’m reading the Chunky Bible, which is NIV. NIV isn’t the most accurate but it’s easy for me to read. Still, NIV doesn’t have the Apocrypha, so I’ll either borrow/get an NAB or just buy the Apocrypha separately.

Apocrypha isn’t included in all the Bibles because Protestants tend to reject those books and Catholics embrace them. I know that the readings in my church often come from Macabees, Baruch or Sirach, it really is a necessity to at least be able to read it somewhere.

This forum has a nice shop full of Catholic bibles, if you can shop online.

I have only found 4 out of 5 of those listed in the stores I visited, and STILL didn’t find them.
Douay Rheims version, I haven’t found at all in the stores I visited.

Just have to remember I am in Australia, not America LOL I have to think of conversion of currency and shipping. PLUS, if there are different translations available here.

Blah! That’s silly…then there should be Bibles that are equally published with and without the Apocrypha.

Those are the translation versions. Sometimes you have to look at the Bible or in the cover to see exactly what translation it is. Like Oxford Annotated Bible often does not say it’s NSRV, but if you examine it, you’ll see where it says that. Chunky Bible Mini is NIV but it doesn’t say NIV in large print. So you really have to look for it.

I checked Ebay.com and they have auctions that are just for your area, in your currency, for Douay Rheims and other Bibles. I’d recommend that, since there’s no Aussie Amazon.com.

What’s wrong with the NAB? I’ up to my ears in King James Onlyism and a bunch of other Onlyisms. Please tell me where NAB is bad.

I am interested in Douay Rheims though. I think I’ll have a collection of ever translation by next year. 😛

Whatever you do, stay away from the NAB.

The Douay-Rheims is still the best English language Bible, in that it is closest to the Latin Vulgate which remains the “official” Bible of the Church. The RSV is good, too.

Obviously the Douay is online, such as here:
drbo.org/

You’re in Oz… so you can order from thenile.com.au right? Try here:

That’s with free shipping.

You can read the Douay-Rheims online (for example, here) and see if it’s even something you’d want. Unfortunately, it does kind of suffer by being a translation of a translation, making it two generations removed from Sacred Scriptures themselves.

Aside from seeming like a clumsy translation, it’s the notes that are the killer. I refer to it as the New Atheist Bible. Like, denying the supernatural origin of the Cyrus prophesy in Isaiah is a pretty huge one. That’s one of the main pieces of evidence that the Scripture has a Divine origin, and the New Atheist Bible (or at least my copy) alleges (without proof, so merely assumes) that it was inserted after the events described (i.e. a hoax i.e. a pack of lies). As another example, God gives this elaborate (granted, perhaps poetical… but who am I to say? which I think is actually the point of the passage) description of Leviathan in the Book of Job, discussing how Job is unable to master such a creature… and the notes blankly deflect God’s speech by glossing “a crocodile”.

Just a couple examples off the top of my head. If I were Caudillo, I’d have every copy of it burned. I don’t know if it was deliberately engineered to subvert and destroy the Catholic Faith, or if it just came out that way by accident.

You’re in RCIA? Then have your sponsor help you out with it. Or your parents. Or both. If you really want it, you can make it happen.

LOL But I don’t always have the internet…I do atm, but once I move I won’t :takethat:

I might wonder up to the second hand book store tomorrow…they have lovely Bibles up there, and cheap too…I like to look at the text size before I buy, a habit of mine when i buy books.

I haven’t got a sponsor yet, I have only just begun.

And my parents, well…I have no Dad, and Mum doesn’t know I am becoming Catholic (so won’t like it so much), plus she has her own worries with money, being a single mum AND I live interstate from her.

LOL

Which Word store did you got to? the CBD one was useless lol…and even Koorong was useless too

Hi, Ashurie…before you buy, make sure the Bible you will purchase has the Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat…to ensure your self you are buying an authentic Catholic Bible.

Hello again, Oops I realised it is not the proper Bible…
Have you tried The Caholic Bookstore in Melbourne City?

I didn’t have time to visit there today, but I will. Just hope I can find one, that won’t send me broke LOL. YAY for payday next week~

With all different versions, it is very confusing for a RCIA person…I thought last night, “geez, why will all the different versions?”, I have always thought the Bible was the Bible, and that was it. LOL

Culturally sanitized genderless re-wording. Wishy-washy notes. It’s better than nothing, but there is much better available, IMO. The RSV-2CE is much better - doesn’t have many notes, but what it has a good. The Ignatius RSV-2CE is beautiful and is a conversation starter in public.

I know!!! I seriously thought that too up until the start of the year. I own 3 Bibles
(due to the fact I have been seeking the right one) (doh!)

You know what? LOL

I have not seen a Bible that has either of them! And I went to two Christian bookstores today, in Melbourne…and looked at dozens of Bibles. LOL xDD

It should be clearer in bookstores, Catholic Bibles there, Protestant Bibles over there.

🤷 Would save all the confusion for us newbies xD

It’s almost as if you live in a nation founded by Protestants. One sympathizes.
