Thank you 🙂 it just gets confusing when everyone has different opinions with the translations, as I am only familiar with 3 versions. LOL So I am like just tell me what to look for and I will seek! XD I just want one where I can read with ease (no fancy language) and enjoy it, and deepen my faith. of Course 🙂
Unfortunately, even with the different opinions, YOU need to choose the Bible that you will read. Could be the best translation but if the print or the binding is not appealing to you, that will be a problem. Do you prefer footnotes at the bottom of the page or at the end of the chapter. Do you want a hardback or a paperback. You need to now take the version information you got here and now choose one for yourself (my two cents is that you should choose one of the Catholic versions rather than another version that happens to contain the apocrypha - this will assure the footnotes and introductions are Catholic to avoid confusion). It may not be a bad idea to own more than one version, one that you like for general reading and one for study. That’s the beauty of it, let the Bible speak to you !

Good Luck!

the Catholic Church is active in Australia and presumably there is an English translation approved for liturgical use there, so the place to find that bible is in a bookstore attached to a parish, shrine or other Catholic venue, or on-line from any Catholic book vendor. The average mass market book store does not specialize in bibles and will have only a basic selection of its best sellers so not the best place to shop for religious material in any case.
Good advice

😃 I was going to order a used pocket Douay from Ebay but I found a regular sized one hidden on my bookshelf. The cover is held together with tape and really wobbly, but the binding is still intact.

Hope you get one soon, Ashurie 🙂

BTW, I see the NIV has a good Study Plan. Part 1 involves reading all the basic stuff in two weeks. Part 2 involves reading the whole Bible straight. What are the most basic things i should read in the deuterocanonical books?

Please do not call them the “Apocrypha,” that’s what Protestants call them to justify leaving them out of the Bible (merely “apocryphal” = not the Word of God). The Catholic term is the deutercanonical books (“second canon”).

Perhaps someone already mentioned this, but I skimmed through and didn’t see.

I think people in general just tend to use that word more because it’s easier to spell and pronounce than deuterocanonical. 😛 But yeah, it’s been mentioned already.

Personally, I would steer clear of the NIV - not only because it’s Protestant but also because it’s a very “free” (i.e. loose and inaccurate) translation and I can’t remember but I think it uses gender neutral language. A good alternative might be the Jerusalem Bible (which is also a “dynamic” translation but still more faithful to the NIV, and Catholic) or the RSV-CE2 (my personal favorite), if you don’t want to wrestle with the language of the Douay-Rheims.

Also, who wants to try to read everything so quickly?? Better to stay with it for a while. 🙂 Take your time. Reading the Bible should be closer to prayer than to reading a newspaper or homework assignment.

As for the deuterocanonical books, I really like the book of Wisdom and the book of Tobit.

Hope this helps. 🙂

I’m already quite aware of the inaccuracy and liberal translation of the NIV. I have a Born Again boyfriend who wishes to be a preacher. 😛 Howevr, the particular NIV I bought is the most comfortable pocket Bible out there for me to hold, and it helps me to get a general idea of what’s in the bible without getting lost, getting stuck on a chapter.

I wish to read through the most basic stuff quickly to help me answer my most basic questions, and then I wish to read through the whole thing. I NEED a reading plan because I’m still dealing with my depression and anxiety, and whatever forces are hoping to get me off track. It would be far too easy for me to do so many other things and then a month later say to myself, “Oh whoops, I forgot to read and forgot to pray.” I have to force myself to say the rosary everyday because of my attention span but I know that the rosary does help me, so i keep doing it.

That said, please read the entire thread. 😛 I think we’re mostly all on the same page now.

I avoid the NIV, since it is a fundamentalist revision of prior translations. It specifically reduces the scriptural importance of Mary and reportedly tweaks the OT prophecy of Jesus to make Him appear more in line with Evangelical beliefs. There are protestants who also dislike the NIV.

I am in Australia, and it is so hard to find a Bible that contains the Apocrypha! It’s annoying, lol, how come it isn’t in the Bible to begin with? Even finding separate book of Apocrypha is not easy to find - if they exist.

Can someone enlighten a newbie? 😃
You could always find it online and print it out
