I think the bible is a holy book, not a certain people’s book. blame me for believing that the bible is holy and not a certain religion/denomination’s book.

Catholics, you guys might have compiled the stories, but at least respect protestants, they believen the same Christ as you.
I do not get it. 🤷

If Protestants concede the fact that it was by the authority of the Catholic Church that the Bible was compiled (an extrabiblical event), then why do they insist today on Sola Scriptura and on the fact that the Catholic Church has no authority?

Such a view is paradoxical.

Maybe we just want to worship God without being told how to do it from men?

Sorry if I am being rude, but I have been told I should come back to the “true” church that its getting rather annoying. Maybe I should, but I’d rather do it after I am done and am ready to go on my own accord.

But your type of worshipping comes from men. Sola Scriptura was never practiced by the early Christians; it “developed” into a doctrine in the 16th century **AS A RESULT **of the Reformation. As a matter of fact, it was an impossibiltity to practice Sola Scriptura because early communities did not have the full compliment of 27 books in their possession at any one time until nearly the fifth century. How could they thus appreciate the fullness of God’s Word? Were two Gospels and half of Paul’s epistles sufficient for the faith?

If so, then why do we have 27 books today?

If not, do you consider the early Christians inferior to you today?
Sorry if I am being rude, but I have been told I should come back to the “true” church that its getting rather annoying.
Religious beliefs is a tense subject for people. What else did you expect? You didn’t think people were instantly going to begin questioning their Catholic faith because of some comments and/or replies you wrote?

By the way, I have been told by Protestants that the Catholic Church is Satan. What do you think?
Maybe I should, but I’d rather do it after I am done and am ready to go on my own accord.
I’m sorry that you are getting annoyed. But you have to remember where you are. This is a Catholic site. I know things can get heated at times and maybe things should be said with less invective, but you are conversing with people who are just as passionate about their beliefs as you are.** What were your expectations for joining CAF in the first place?**

Unlike the earlier churches, we can mass-print, and everyone can read, or I hope in America…

And what do Catholics call us? heretics…

I joined to learn more about the Catholic Church, and I have, but I have also learned a lot of other things.

The Catholic Church gained the ability to mass print exactly at the same time as Protestants did. (And they DID mass print. For example, the Douay-Rheims version of the Bible in English was released BEFORE the Protestant King James Version.)
And what do Catholics call us? heretics…
A heretic, in Catholic terms, is not just someone who holds ideas that are contrary to the Catholic Church. It’s someone who holds an idea that is so contrary to the Catholic/Orthodox understanding of Christianity that it could literally endanger their salvation. The thing that makes the differences between Catholics/Orthodox and Protestants so touchy is that their beliefs about Christianity are often NOT compatible with each other, meaning that from the each other’s point of view, they might not have any hope of being saved. In other words, either the Protestant viewpoint or the Catholic/Orthodox viewpoint is correct, but they cannot BOTH be correct.
I joined to learn more about the Catholic Church, and I have, but I have also learned a lot of other things.
A board like this is always going to have a few fanatics. (After all, people who aren’t passionate about their faith wouldn’t even be on a board like this, would they?) A lot of it has to do with history. How much do you know about Christian history? Perhaps that would be a good topic for another thread…

**Do you consider yourself more Christian than those earlier churches then? **Keep in mind that those early churches were just a mere generation removed from the death and Resurrection of our Lord. That generation had access to people who personally knew the Lord’s Apostles. No one in the 16th century had that type of access.
And what do Catholics call us? heretics…
I know some do. Not all, though. Like I said earlier, sometimes emotion gets the better part of both Catholics and Protestants when both parties are trying to convey their messages to one another. But you were the one who made it seem that Protestants have not done anything to provoke Catholics on this forum (when you said that you were getting annoyed about being told to join the “true church.”) It goes both ways. Protestants are not innocent either of this type of trangression.

Excellent point. Given that, how can we work to cure that? Is ecumenism a healthy option?

I don’t think that’s fair. Most Catholics here have gone to great lengths to explain to you what a heretic is, and it’s not a Protestant born Protestant, nor is it a Jewish born Jew, etc. The only person that I have seen call a non Catholic a heretic since you joined, was corrected by Catholics repeatedly until he was finally banned and the offensive posts removed.

Perhaps the Baptist tells you that’s what Catholics teach about non-Catholics, and you came here with that bias.

Catholics are sinners like everybody else. There are some Catholics who are very ignorant of Church Teachings, just like in other religions.

Many Protestants should come to this forum with a better understanding of Catholicism. Too often, they come with their pathetic stereotypes, i.e.Catholics worship Mary, the Pope is a perfect man, Catholics added books to the Bible in the 16th century, etc.,etc.,etc. Or they come to CAF to arouse hostility. Or they come here wanting to hear about Catholicism but they refuse to perceive what is being said to them because, in essence, their minds have tried, convicted and judged Catholicism long before ever deciding to join CAF.

Such an attitude is counterproductive to ecumenism.

And the same can be said of some of the Catholics here as well. Too often both groups use their ideas for the purpose of trashing the beliefs of one another rather than trying to establish healthy debate.

You don’t get it.

Protestants are the ones who are joining CAF to converse with Catholics, not the other way around. The onus is on them to come with patience and a general understanding of Catholicism. If they did, I doubt (but unfortunately can’t 100% guarantee) that their comments would be trashed by Catholics.

My opinion on this is that most protestants come here and begin attacking our beliefs with what they believe. Catholics falls in their traps and begin attacking back.

first of all protestants do not want to answer questions which is another trap. it seems to me they only want to argue.
i suggest that catholics begin to ask more questions to protestants about what they really believe and why they believe who tougth them since they all believe different things.
then ask them if they are interested in know more about our faith.

i see here many arguments back and forth that are nothing but fruitless and tiredsome.

Peace.

You can always tell - the new ones come here to “enlighten” us and think they are telling us something we never heard of :bigyikes:

Well, I have learned a lot from CAF. I’ve also learned a lot about Protestants and Jewish people.
I hope some myths concerning Catholic beliefs have been dispelled for Catholics and non Catholics. I know some of mine have.

You mentioned this on another thread, Jimmy in response to me.

It’s a catholic book. Not a Roman Catholic one 😃
It is a Catholic Book. In other instances, it’s not a Roman Catholic book. The Bible was given to the world through the Catholic Church. Even your buddy Martin Luther admitted that much. The Bible is therefore a Catholic Book. Since some outside the Church have distorted its meaning with incorrect translation(s), then yes that version becomes their Bible, as it is no longer the unadulterated Word of God. So, the versions made fallibly are not Roman Catholic Books.

The NT was written by Holy Spirit inspired members of the early Church built by Christ (which is the Body of Christ) for members of the Church Jesus built, the Body of Christ. This same Body of Christ, the Church later became known by the name Catholic. The OT and NT Sacred Scriptures were chosen by the Catholic Church to be in the Bible, and infallibly done.

God’s House, the Church built by Christ is the pillar and ground of truth. This same Church, know by the name Catholic Church supports the truth of the Bible and protects these truths against heresies, like those who say the Bible is formally sufficient. This is the way God set it up. So those who love and obey the Lord say “Thanks be to God, and Blessed be His Holy Name.”

God established His one worldwide Church for His entire family. He entrusted Oral and Written Tradition to it, with His care. I’ve never known that He asked anyone to create their own interpretation that conflicts with the way He not only gave to us, but also determined it was to be handed down and protected. He also called us to be one, without any denominations. The very Bible we speak about opposes the idea of denominations, and improper and irreconcilable interpretations. If people want to go start their own denomination, and complain about us telling you what God established with the Church, then you’re complaining about God’s plan.

The Catholic Church respects whatever truth one has, as it can be used as a stepping stone to come to the fullness of truth, in the Catholic Church. However, the divisions that separate us are scandalous and intolerable.

Curious… done with what? Even if God speaks to you directly to do something, you still use your free will to either cooperate or oppose. It’s always your choice. There’s no sin in obeying God, is there? If you want to put your swim trunks on, we’ll just say the water is fine. A little bit of the tear, a little of the schism is healed. This time next year, you’re going to be one year older…, will you still be doing the same things, or will you have pursued truth with vengeance following where it leads. I admire one who has courage to go with the truth, as it isn’t always easy.

The Bible is a “Catholic Book”, therefore, everything in the Bible, in one way or another supports Catholicism.

Ignorance of Catholicism is ignorance of the Bible.

Your thoughts?
My thoughts? Well, you’re correct, though overly blunt

We come to NON-CATHOLIC RELIGIONS hoping to learn, and in return we would hope you would want the same. Just because it is your house doesn’t mean you have the right to treat guests with disrespect, and some here do that.

Hello terryobrien80

Blunt or “overly” blunt. 😃

What is blunt? …being straight to the point…direct…maybe a little…Ok…guilty as charged. 😉

What would the world be like, if we were all exactly the same?

Thank you for your post.

Peace 🙂

intolerable? I do not think my church would kick anyone away cause of their beliefs…we have had all kinds there.

scandalous? I only know a word that has to do with that, scandal, and last I checked the SB never had any sort of scandal…

Everyone is bias if they have ever been in any denomination/religion on certain subjects. I do not remember ever hearing the word Catholic at my Baptist Church.

Done with studying and came to the conclusion of whether the Catholic Church is gonna be the place for me or if its not.

If god told me to go to the CC, then I would, no doubt, but if he doesn’t I will try to do my best to find out if I should.
