You are correct about Canon Law. I read that in a special circumstance, such as when there is no priest, faculties may be given to a lay person who can then pray with the full authority of the church.

An example would be a lay missionary in an area without priests.

Correct you are mistaken.

Only a Priest (appointed by their Bishop) may be an exorcist - may preform the Rite of Exorcism.

That refers to the exorcism of the possessed.

Not to “deliverance ministry” of those who are say effected by evil spirits in other ways.

Actually a lay person can perform a “Minor Exorcism” as seen on the USCCB website:

The minister of a minor exorcism is the designated authorized minister of the sacrament (RCIA or Baptism for Children) or blessing being celebrated. Thus, the prayers in Appendix II, “Supplications which May be Used by the Faithful Privately in Their Struggle against the Powers of Darkness” may be offered by any member of the clergy or by the lay faithful. However, the Rite of Major Exorcism is to be celebrated only by a bishop or a priest who has obtained the special and express permission of the diocesan bishop.

Granted that’s not really what we are talking about but it is technically a exorcism. Maybe that is what the above poster was referring to.

Related Canon Law:

Can. 1172 §1. No one can perform exorcisms legitimately upon the possessed unless he has obtained special and express permission from the local ordinary.
§2. The local ordinary is to give this permission only to a presbyter who has piety, knowledge, prudence, and integrity of life.

This was not actually always so and historically lay persons could perform an exorcism, but to curb abuse and because its generally a good idea the church decreed that a priest should be the one doing it. That being said Laypersons, religious, and deacons often assist in exorcisms. Some Exorcists also have lay prayer teams or discernment teams they send to discern if an Exorcism is needed before they go.

It should be noted this is related to using the actual Rite of Exorcism. Any Christian can struggle against evil including a person under Demonic oppression. So don’t think you are helpless just because you cannot perform the Rite of Exorcism. Some methods that have proven most successful are the St. Michaels Prayer, Rosary, Brown Scapular, & St. Benedict Medal.

That doesn’t mean you should go looking for trouble of course, as seeking out any confrontation with evil is extremely dangerous and should only be undertaken out of necessity in dire circumstances and you should immediately try to get clerical assistance. You can ask anyone who has actually encountered a true demonic situation and they will tell you it is not fun and not something you should seek out on your own.

Back to the tv show:
It turns out that the mother is actually Regan MacNeill, she little girl possessed in the original movie. and the demon really wants her. (So why not go back to her?).

So far no priest in this show speaks well for the Church. There was hope for the younger one but of course he had to break celibacy.

yes…my “theory” is that in our secularized world focused on material issues, people crave something transcendent beyond this perceived materialistic (thus mundane) everyday life, whether they know it or not. Any semblance of it will do, even if it’s pure drivel (Game of Thrones, Lucifer, Buffy, Supernatural, paranormal ghost hunter shows, etc.).

In a sense though, I guess all entertainment seeks to fill this void in some way :\

Haven’t read all the comments - but I’ve been watching this series - think we just saw episode 4 here in the UK. I’m enjoying it - think its “pretty good” though not great. I REALLY liked the twist in episode 4 (I wont give spoilers) - and look forward to seeing where it goes next week. I also want to see how the Priests develop, how they work through their own angst.

(lol - said I wouldn’t give spoiler from episode 4 - but someone did above! Anyway - I really like that twist!)

So do I. I was about to give up on show and then I saw the twist. I read somewhere that it may not be renewed next season.

O I still watch this because my wife watches it. God seems totally absent.

But how well do we recognize demonic activity in reality? Dylan Roof for example. Any mass shooting. ISIS.

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis notes Father Lampert as exorcist of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, an office to which he was appointed by Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein.

Some comments he made on this specific show,

“The exorcist is actually trained to be a skeptic,” he explained.

“It speaks to truth of the reality of evil. It speaks to the truth that evil needs to be combated,” he said.

According to Father Vince, how evil is portrayed on the show is fact. The fictional part is how the evil is dealt with.​

“One would not be tied down with shackles or anything like that because if one was really possessed with superhuman strength, that wouldn’t do anything,” he said.

Catholic exorcisms are always performed in a sacred place, not in rundown buildings as featured on the show.

“I jokingly tell people an exorcism is never performed in an abandoned house on a dead-end street during an electrical storm. The devil doesn’t get to decide where he will be defeated, the church will decide that,” said Father Vince.
