I would like to see us stop our interventionism in foreign affairs. There is no reason to have a military presence in 100-150 countries.
Yes. Bring all the troops home and retrain them as a civilian corps to protect school children who are being massacred while attending classes.

Can you point to a specific country where we need to draw down our presence? Is this determination based on the data at hand or a principle?

Please detail which specific changes and/or reductions you would make.
There are so many. For example, one would be to reduce the number of nuclear warheads. Presently, the US has more than 70,000 nuclear warheads and it gets all upset when North Korea has 1 in development. Why do Americans need to kill everyone on the planet 700 times ? Once you are dead you are dead. I would reduce the number of nuclear war heads by 100 to 700 which is more than enough to kill everyone in China and in Europe 5 times.

First let’s define an Interventionist-the policy or doctrine of intervening, especially government interference in the affairs of another state or in domestic economic affairs. This is beyond our military intervention

It is costly and generally non-productive. We have fought numerous endless wars with no end in sight, The Middle East is fighting for a homeland and they are a culture that has long fought tribal wars against each other. You can’t expect for Americans to fight in a foreign land with the same enthusiasm as someone with their back against the wall. We are not invited in Syria, why are we there?

From 1948-1991 America had 36 military interventions, from 1992-2017 there were 188. NATO is no longer needed and yet it expands and the US funds the greater part of it for countries that are economically and militarily able to fend for themselves.

We protect other countries borders at the expense of our own.

Our foreign expenses increase exponentially. When does the nonsense end?

The cost of Afghanistan alone is over $1 Trillion. That doesn’t include Iraq, Syria, countless bases around the world

Excellent observations. I don’t see any need for NATO. NATO troops with tanks were marching in Moldova and people there were demonstrating that they don’t want NATO. Russians post a few things on facebook and twitter and there is a huge outcry. But it is OK that there were 188 American military interventions in foreign countries from 1992 to 2017.

One thousand billion dollars. Just think how one percent of that could relieve the homeless crisis in the USA. Why does the US need to be in Afghanistan? Hundreds of billions of dollars spent in the War against Vietnam. Can anyone tell me what good was accomplished in the Vietnam War. How many thousands of Americans were killed and for what?

Actually, no.

The maximum U.S. nuclear inventory was 30,000 [no where near 70,000] … now reduced to ~ 4,000 … you have to look it up.

Russian maximum was ~ 40,000 … also reduced.

The plutonium was used to make MOX fuel used in power plants.

9/11 changed everything.

An area of 16 square blocks of lower Manhattan was totally cratered, and 3,000 people were incinerated. In addition the huge Pentagon building was nearly totally demolished.

Our intel bureaucrats were so worried that someone might “say something” that they hamstrung our own people. Read up on The Mistress of Disaster.

But the people who do the work knew where to look.

Not really. This could have been avoided earlier. We were boxed in at that point with the twin towers and had to offer retribution, I agree. However, this could have been avoided years earlier had we stayed the line and not sought to intervene in foreign affairs. During the war between Afghanistan and Russia we offered training to radical Islamic groups, some of which became the Taliban. We provided weapons to these people and sought to dictate their governmental choices. These guys were the mujahideen. One of the these people was Saudi business man Osama Bin Laden who formed Al Qaeda, America supported him as well. Apparently this was all well and good until things went south and they became our enemies because they didn’t want to do things the way we wanted them too. They did not want to be dictated to by America and did not want our intervention anymore than they wanted the Russians there. The result was their terrorist attacks on Americans, resulting in our further intervention into America’s longest war with numerous loss of American lives and insurmountable monetary cost and ill will with most of the parties in the Middle East. Islamic groups would have had little need to make us the Great Enemy had we not sought to interfere in their internal affairs. These wars have proved terrible for so many. It is sad this happened.

There was NOT a war between Afghanistan and Russia!

Russia INVADED Afghanistan.

We warned Afghanistan … the highways and the Salang Tunnel … built by Russia specifically FOR INVASION.

It was obvious … but they didn’t listen.

Gary Bernsten, a native of Smithtown, has been on Mr. Bin Laden’s trail since 1998 after the bombings of the U.S. embassies in East Africa. But after 9/11, Mr. Bernsten was sent to Afghanistan to command a clandestine unit with the mission of “killing bin Laden.” Today, Mr. Bernsten is the New York State Chairman for “Veterans for McCain.”

Gary Berntsen, the CIA’s key commander coordinating the fight against the Taliban forces around Kabul, comes out from under cover for the first time to describe his no-holds-barred pursuit and cornering of Osama bin Laden, and the reason the terrorist leader escaped American retribution. As disturbingly eye-opening as it is adrenaline-charged, Jawbreaker races from CIA war rooms to diplomatic offices to mountaintop redoubts to paint a vivid portrait of a new kind of warfare, showing what can and should be done to deal a death blow to freedom’s enemies.

Jawbreaker: The Attack on Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda: A Personal Account by the CIA’s Key Field Commander Paperback – October 24, 2006

Some readers complained about the CIA redactions in the book.

Which is why we should completely pulled out after killing Osama Bin Laden.

What do you actually know about nuclear warfare? I realize this is the internet and my question sounds extremely condescending, but I assure you, this is a genuine query.

I very much doubt that accurate information on that number is publicly available, nor would I want it to be.

They fought each other. That is a War, Conflict whatever you want to label it. In American we shy away from calling them “war” when we don’t go through congress and get a declaration of war as we should, or want to make them sound politically acceptable. It makes us feel better, Like the “Vietnam Conflict” that cost the lives of 58,000 American soldiers.

Honor and respect should be give to all our soldiers who served in these wars. Many served against their wills but they paid the ultimate price. By all means, let’s give them the respect and honor they deserve. However, many soldiers who survive continue to bear the physical and mental scars of misguided political and economic motives of politicians , arms dealers, oil barons and other economic opportunists.

We were not invited is Syria, are we invaders by your defintion?

Why must we always paint American Interventionism with a white hat with a noble cause? We supply the same people with weapons who in turn use them against us. The enemy of our enemy is not usually our friend.

I am proud to be an American, and I am all for defense of this country and a strong military, However I am not proud of this country’s international interventions. We Americans have intervened continuously around the world. Why can’t we just admit it. We have allied ourselves at times with the worst of the worst. Roosevelt was chummy with Stalin, The AJAX project in Iran was purely about oil. The US worked with the Taliban and bin Laden. We have worked with terrible dictators around the world for economic gain. You don’t need a military to do that.

We should be proud to be Americans and willing to defend our country but we need to acknowledge the dark side of this country’s activities, as well. Let’s not sugar coat the full story of how and why we are really in these wars.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists July/August 2006, page 64, “Global Nuclear Stockpiles 1945 -2006” prepared by the Natural Resources Defense council, says that more than 70,000 nuclear warheads have been produced by the US since 1945 and that the Pentagon has custody (as of 2006), of 10,000 stockpiled warheads of which about 5735 are active. Why was it necessary to produce 70,000 nuclear warheads?

Keep in mind that even with the current number of ~ 5,000 or so, most are in maintenance at any given time.

The original nuke weighed 10,000 pounds … huge giant thing.

The later ones were the size of a bowling ball.

They improved the design over time.

They even used them for air-to-air:

Little things.

That might even be a photo of Lt. George W. Bush posing with his F-102 parked in the background.
