A United States citizen who is married can sponsor his or her non-American spouse for immigration into this country.

Would you agree that this is a government benefit?
Not enough information. We need to know if non-related adults are barred from sponsoring.

There is a confusion in the issue. The matter is not to be or not to be gay, but what really fulfills the human heart.
Since the beginning man has always tried to find a way to fulfill his deepest desires and has often confused the human question of happiness with the partial answer of feelings. But love is not a feeling, Love has become Man, Christ. So the matter is how to meet this Man who alone can fulfill our infinite desire and not a moral code to respect. All other attempts are at the end useless.
Imagine to reach the end of life having walked in one direction and God tells you that you should have walked in the opposite… So the problem is not what we feel but to discern what we are made for and called to.

Cheers

The benefit is being permitted to immigrate to this country. ANYONE can immigrate to the U.S. The government does not restrict people from doing that. I don’t believe gays should be given preferential treatment just because their partner is of the same sex. Married heterosexuals can potentially contribute to a society in a way that gay couples cannot. Identically, married people can potentially contribute to a society in a way that a single person cannot. Based on that, gay couples should not be given preferential treatment over single people as far as immigration is concerned. That is fair and equitable.

But “gay marriage rights” is not at all about equitableness and fairness, is it? If a gay couple’s contribution to a society they want to immigrate to is no different from the contribution of a single person, then why should a gay person be permitted to immigrate into that country differently from any other single person? Please explain.

God did not support separation of church and state when it came to Israel.

Exactly when did God change His mind on that issue?

I would pose the question in just the opposite terms. It is Catholicism, along with fundamentalist Christianity, which as been intolerant of gays, even to the point of usurping God’s role as judge and prematurely condemning all such to Hell everafter.

Why shouldn’t we allow gays to marry? Are we afraid the half of their marriages will end in divorce? That is certainly unheard of in our culture. Besides, why shouldn’t Gay partners be just as miserable as the rest of us?

Most homosexuals are perhaps athiests, (sic) so you won’t get anywhere with that argument. And most who support the homosexual ideology are proabably (sic) athiests (sic) too, so your arguments will likewise just fall on deaf ears.
Do you have* any* basis at all for this claim? Have you seen any statistical data or reliable anecdotal evidence supporting “most” homosexuals and “most” non-homosexuals who “support the homosexual ideology” (which is what, exactly? Homosexuality is not an ideology like Republicanism or capitalism or even Catholicism.) are atheists?

I know gay, straight and bisexual people who are atheists, as well as gay, straight and bisexual people who are religious - even Catholic. The tendency toward religious affiliation does not break down along lines of orientation, nor political support of “gay rights” in people of my acquaintance. So I am wondering if you can cite a source, or if you are just making unfounded assumptions as an excuse for name-calling.

Again, careful of what you ask for. Look around the world for a Godless nation that will maintain your rights. May you live so long as to find one!
Pretty much all of Scandinavia. Consistently ranked by the UN as the best countries in the world to live in.

Anybody else ashamed to be associated with some of the narrow-minded, bigoted Catholics on this post? Fair enough, we believe homosexual acts to be a sin. But who are we to impose our own religious beliefs on non-Catholics? I agree with other posters - this would mean lobbying for a national ban on divorce as well.

Yeah, I like the narrow-minded, bigoted label. I wear it proudly. I oppose any social acceptance that fosters practice of sin, like homosexual marriage.

Who are we? We’re God’s children. We’ve been given a commission to look after our brothers and sisters and show them The Way, whether they are Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Buddist, etc. or athiest.

Interesting to me how one can equate the dissolution of marriage, divorce, to the acceptance and fostering of what we consider sin. The formula seems to be:
  1. Pick another socially relevant sin.
  2. Equate its sinfulness to that of homosexuality/homosexual marriage.
  3. Cry out why for the love of Pete why we don’t rail against the other socially relevant sin
as much as we do the concept of homosexual marriage.
It’s a tired bait and switch tactic, used by homosexual advocates for decades, to deflect the real problems with the concept of “allowing”, “accepting” or “tolerating” people of the same sex to “marry”.

“…it’s clear that God hates gays…” Really? I though God was love and that he loves everybody even the sinners.
With all due respect, can I make something clear here? Did you read the above post of how this really comes about? It is really not something someone is “born” with, although there may be hormonal changes in the womb where the brain gets doused with the opposite sex hormone, although this has never been proven nor have they ever scientifically found a “genetic” link, so until they do, I wouldn’t advise anyone to make this assumption.

I feel for your son as I have struggled with these feelings, however in a bisexual way, I have chosen to remain celibate as God requires all single people to be until marriage. Did you know that those wounds he was inflicted from his peers at a young age and as you said has scars from actually can contribute to him taking up a gay identification? Yes, there are a number of things as the above poster said that can contribute to this, so let’s be open-minded about the numerous possibilities. She mentioned some very good research groups that have researched this extensively over a number of years and have published many studies on the subject. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with these.

With all due respect, you have it all wrong about what the Catholic church teaches on this subject. They say that the orientation is disordered, not the person. They understand that people struggle with this. They teach is abstinence and much prayer and advise support and counseling for it. As Jesus would, they always offer an open heart and an open door to Mass or to talk to a priest for those afflicted with this because who needs it more? As we all struggle with some sin, we need the Eucharist/Jesus even more.

The church offers a group called Courage for support, encouragement and prayer (lifting up of the downtrodden). It is a Catholic group with people who struggles with same sex attraction and who wish to remain celibate as God and the church calls them to be. At the same time they pray for strength as a unit and share their stories and struggles with one another keeping one another strong. Here is the link - couragerc.net. I hope you find what you are looking for here. There is also a Catholic group for parents and friends to help with understanding this and support. It is called Encourage. I suggest you look into these groups and read the website that the poster, I think about 3 posts up, has posted. One is called Narth.com. It is important to educate yourself on this matter.

Also, GOD DID NOT CREATE HOMOSEXUALITY or make anyone that way. Inasmuch as he didn’t create evil, diseases, fires, hurricanes, he did not create this. He let certain things happen so that He could bring good out of them and so that He could be glorified through them. Many struggles we have bring us closer to each other and closer to God because it is then that WE TRULY NEED HIM and reach out for Him. He then gives us Grace and strength we need to get through it. You’ve heard of miracle stories of people being healed of diseases, cancer, alcoholism, etc. Well there are people who have been healed of homosexuality! This doesn’t happen in all cases and is not even something to focus on, we should focus on pleasing God and remaining abstinent and filling up on His love, but this sometimes happens too. There are MANY people who call themselves ex-gay, people who have been healed or who choose to lead a celibate life glorifying God in their bodies. You can read about this at Exodus.org.

I will pray for you and your son.

May God bless you and your son abundantly.

Beautiful and right on! It’s all about fulfilling needs, deep legitimate needs, but they’re trying to fill them in an illegitimate way, and guess what? It doesn’t work! It’s not God’s plan for us. If we need to get these needs met that were not met like they should have been, we need to turn to the only One who can meet them now, God!

Ladybri Excellent post. Listen to what she is telling you. God does not make or cause sin. Yes he gives us our crosses to carry. Just like a person who cannot handle alcohol must stay away from it. Why can some people drink others can’t. Because Alcohol is the cross for some people. If a person is a drunk and does not stop drinking and driving you cannot say oh hes a drunk it’s okay. ITs not okay to sin for any reason.

What we are trying to say the Church understands the sin, and is not here to deny the feeling’s, but is here to show you that from the help of God you can over power them. Anything that goes against God comes from the devil. He knows our weakness and will do anything to hit us at our lowest to make us sin. But the bible tells us no matter what power the devil has (and he does have power, never doubt that. evil ones) God can and will beat him. All we have to do is pray and ask for Gods help.

But please remember we all have the devil working at us. But we just can’t let him overpower God. And if we teach our kids that we do not deny what they feel, just like a alcoholic needs a drink, or a person on crack need a fix, you can through Jesus beat that urge. And the further you stay away from the sin, the harder it is for the devil to get to us.

If we turn away from the sin, and turn towards God, he will fix it for us. But its hard, but it possible.

So true, rinni. Also if we stay away from the sin, it decreases in its power over us. If you feed the flesh, the flesh gets stronger, if you feed the Spirit, the Spirit gets stronger. I believe that is a scripture verse. Believe me, it is true, I have experienced it for myself!

I agree - but since when did “look after” mean “restrict the human rights of”? You’re not talking about feeding the poor or clothing the naked here. You’re talking about an imposition of your own beliefs on someone who doesn’t share your values. Essentially forcing someone to live by Christian standards by denying our God-given free will to choose or reject him. You can’t win people to Christ through legislation.

Yes… and your point is?
It’s been used for decades because its a valid argument. Just because its used by “homosexual advocates” doesn’t make it wrong.

Surely divorce is worse than homosexuality? Divorce implies the absence or breakdown of love. Gay men and women wanting their social partnership to be legally (not spiritually) recognised are asking for their love to be recognised. We may not agree with their actions, but the presence of love is undeniable, thus the presence of God is undeniable.

The above quotes are not from my post.

If we allow immorality to do whatever it wants, legalizing immoral unions, then who knows were it would lead to. Like another poster said, our children will eventually be taught in schools that acting out homosexually is okay. Yes, we need to accept all people, but we do not have to accept their lifestyle, and I wouldn’t want my kids to be taught this. They are already trying to legalize incest in Europe. Who knows where this legalizing same sex marriage will lead to next in the U.S. Maybe legalizing polygamy? Incest? We have a moral obligation to stand up for morality and vote against laws which stand for immorality and against the common good. Civilized rings a bell.

The church certainly is intolerant; it’s clear that God hates gays, calling them an abomination.

The main problem in the equation is the presence of the word “marriage.” Marriage is the uniting of two bodies under the eyes of God. A union unites two people in the eyes of the state, for legal benefits.

The gay community is not asking for their union to be acknowledged in the eyes of the church, they really just want the state and federal benefits that they’re being denied because they aren’t straight.

It shouldn’t be up to a religion’s intolerance to decide who recieves federal benefits. Seperation of church and state; hopefully someday we’ll have it in entirety.
I agree with the French system, where there is a civil contract whereby any couple (gay, non gay, or even a mother and a son) living together have access to most social benefits that married people have. But it’s not called marriage, and I think that makes the arrangement palatable to most people.

Children adoption is a more difficult problem because it involves a third person. Is it right to force a child into a social arrangement that has not been around for the last 50,000 years? Do we have that right?

Incest? Polygamy? You’re so conventional… Why not 2M-2F unions or 2M-4F, or why not marriage of someone with his/her dog? The possibilities are endless… 😉

Consider: Government also has an interest in preserving such unions as will maintain and benefit the nation. Children are the main benefit to government, via their role in employment and the furnishing of revenue through taxes. “Unions” provide no such children.
Oh, so we shouldn’t allow anyone who is infertile to get married? This is a weak argument. Just because a couple cannot have children doesn’t mean that they can’t raise children. If every gay couple adopted a child, this would help America’s financial situation greatly. If you want to argue economics.
The Church only represents God. So, your problem is with God. I see that by your profile.
Correct, the church tries to enforce some of God’s rules. What’s your argument?
Again, careful of what you ask for. Look around the world for a Godless nation that will maintain your rights. May you live so long as to find one!
Of which country are you referring to? If you’re referring to the predominately Muslim countries, they too have a god.

Also, if all of the Catholic God’s rules were enforced, divorce would be illegal and people would have their eyes pecked out by various wild birds for making fun of their mother.
