I heard on the news today that they will be having a Scientology “wedding”. I did not know this, but her parents are what were described as “devout Catholics”. The story also went on to say that they are attending the ceremony, and that her father will give the bride away.

It just makes me so horribly sad to hear that someone who is a “devout Catholic” would endorse and support such a thing. I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult this decision must be for them, but it is still sad nonetheless to know that their daughter is leaving the Church and they support this (at least from a public perspective they appear to).

Anyway - just posting thoughts and a bit of a vent about this. Not sure there really is much more to say about it. 😦

My friend went to high school with her. Her parents must be freaked.

Snore. zzZZZZzzzZZZZzzzzz
Oh, I quite agree. I’m just sad that her parents are selling out to Hollywood. It’s a non-news event if you ask me, even if it will reach frenzy status over the next days/weeks to when ever it’s happening. I don’t pay attention to this sort of thing, it only caught my attention when I heard about her Catholic parents.

Just because her father is “giving her away” at the wedding doesn’t mean he supports scientology, but supports his daughter. Do you think he should not attend his daughter’s wedding? I am sure her family is very upset. Since she was raised in the church the grace she has received thus far may lead her back to the church. Hey, maybe Tom and Suri will become catholics one day. Nothing is impossible for God!

I heard that they are also having a Catholic wedding the day before. I hope that at least is true, 'cause then she’s not quite as crazy as Tom. Almost, but not quite.

Is it too much to ask that they have a silent wedding and just disappear… forever?

Just because her parents are attending and her Dad is walking her down the aisle, does not mean they are selling out to Hollywood.

I’m sure they’re unhappy with the situation. But no matter how much my kids screw up or how much I disapproved of the circumstances of their “wedding”, I would never abandon them on their wedding day.

I could never support my child in making a decision to live in a state of sin in an invalid “marriage”.

Sorry. That’s not support for a child, that is abandonment of what you have lived your entire life to teach them.

If the bride or groom are Catholic and do not get a dispensation from the bishop, it is not a valid marriage. But if both bride and groom are not Catholic or have officially renounced the Church, it would be a valid marriage and the parents could attend with clean conscience. So are they both not Catholic?

It is my understanding that Katie Holmes is Catholic. Tom Cruise is Scientology.

I also believe that the fact that he and Nicole Kidman had a Scientology wedding, which is not valid in the eyes of the Church, is what allowed her to marry her present husband in the Catholic Church.

Well, if they’re really having a Catholic wedding one day and a scientology one the next, it sort of points to having a dispensation.

It’s a shame that these sorts of things are never discussed in the media. When they aren’t, it gives the impression that the Catholic Church doesn’t care and recognizes a Scientology union when one half of the couple is Catholic. It’s the sort of thing that leads to all sorts of misunderstandings.

Probably be a lot of Thetans there.

She did, however, have to get an annulment before getting married again.

Tom Cruise was raised Catholic - and was even in the seminary for awhile. So he is a baptized Catholic who left the church.

From what I’ve read, Katie Holmes parents are devout Catholics and they have been very unhappy with their daughter’s involvement with Tom Cruise and the pending “wedding.”

I’d “freak out” if I were Katie Holmes parents too!

But by refusing to go toher wedding, they may further alienate her and reduce the chances that she’ll come to her senses. I’m sure they’ve agonized over this, and decided this is the best way to go.
