AgnosTheist, please reread this quote. I think you’ll find that MHalsey is restating (albeit in a dramatic way) the Catholic position.

The lives of Agnostics and those who don’t believe in religion are as valuable as the unborn!!! We Catholics choose LIFE for them.

He’s saying (I think) that he’s about as willing to “abort” agnostics and atheists and he is willing to abort the unborn.
I guess I should have used an emoticon or something.

My apologies to AgnosTheist if offended him.

First, do abortion laws in Nicaragua truly conform to Catholic teaching or are they merely similar? If Nicaragua allows women with ectopic pregnancies to die, they are far removed from Catholic teaching. If we assume this is the case (I don’t actually know, do you?) of course the Catholic Church would wish things changed. Only apostate Catholics and anti-Catholics would not want such policies changed.
Nicaragua is a Catholic country. That does not mean that the country is run by the Catholic Church; but it does mean that this law was most probably made in deference to the teachings of the Catholic Church. If the Catholic Church disapproved of such a law, the least they could do is to protest against it. Silence is a sign of consent. Has the church protested? I can’t say that I know; but it appears unlikely, otherwise it would have appeared in the same news reports.
Utah is a Mormon state. Do people there drink coffee, gamble or disregard the Book of Mormon? . . .
Yes they do. But if the Utah State Legislature passed a law that anyone who drank and smoked should be burned to death on the funeral pier of their drink and smoke, I am sure that the LDS Church would protest that such a law is inhumane, and would not want to have anything to do with it.
Do you really know anything about the Catholic Church in Nicaragua, what is being promoted, what is being opposed?
No; but given the amount of news coverage given to the subject, it is fair to say that if the Catholic Church had raised any objections to it, it would have been reported in the same news reports.
I hope you can answer the first question in my post, then back up the assertion that I bolded in your post with some facts, if they exist. Thanks.
I hope that I have answered that above.

Holland to allow ‘baby euthanasia’
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A hospital in the Netherlands — the first nation to permit euthanasia — recently proposed guidelines for mercy killings of terminally ill newborns, and then made a startling revelation: It has already begun carrying out such procedures, which include administering a lethal dose of sedatives.

The announcement by the Groningen Academic Hospital came amid a growing discussion in Holland on whether to legalize euthanasia on people incapable of deciding for themselves whether they want to end their lives — a prospect viewed with horror by euthanasia opponents and as a natural evolution by advocates.

A relatively high percentage of babies born in the U.S. die before their first birthday, compared with other industrialized nations. Forty countries, including Cuba, Taiwan and most of Europe had lower infant mortality rates than the U.S. in 2004. The U.S. rate was 6.8 deaths for every 1,000 live births. It was 13.7 for Black Americans, the same as Saudi Arabia.

2 Guatemala Candidates Shot Before Vote
Two candidates from Nobel Laureate and presidential hopeful Rigoberta Menchu’s political party were shot dead Wednesday amid a wave of campaign-related violence that has claimed about 50 lives.

The victims were running for municipal council seats in San Raymundo, 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Guatemala City. This has been the most violent campaign in Guatemala’s recent history. About 50 politicians, activists and their relatives have been killed during the past four months of campaigning to replace the president, federal lawmakers and local officials in the election Sunday.

Nicaraguan Leader Rails at U.S. Hegemony
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega accused the U.S. of imposing a worldwide dictatorship and defended the right of Iran and North Korea to pursue nuclear technology in a speech Tuesday before the U.N. General Assembly meeting.

Ortega also angrily denounced President Bush for criticizing Cuban leader Fidel Castro during his speech earlier in the day. Ortega, who took office in January, said little had changed since he last addressed the world body as the Marxist leader of Nicaragua’s Sandinista-run government two decades ago.

Prove that earth is limited in size and therefore could only support a limited number of people?

Rebecca you are better than this.

anyway, enjoy:

i mean it, its a fun read. 🙂
Taking yourself out of context? This is what you said:
Code:
*easier said than resolved. face it pal, no matter how efficient your method of distribution is, the fact is the earth is limited in size and can only support a limited number of people. its not that bad right now, but its only a matter of time. and its gonna happen a lot sooner when catholics prohibit contraception and muslims try to out-birth christians.
*Prove we could not feed the world population now and continue do so in the future.

And prove that the Catholic belief in not using contraception or people (of any faith) having children is the cause of chronic hunger.

You misunderstood. I never said, nor did I ever imply that “we could not feed the world population now”.

This is just a prediction for the future. Isnt it quite obvious? ‘No Contraception’ leads to higher population. And then overcrowding leads to chronic hunger. tsk tsk tsk.

Eugenic Manifesto
Equality is man’s most dangerous myth. All men do not have an equal right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Only the ethical, moral and law abiding have a right to liberty; only the productive and creative have a right to life; and only the wise have a right to the pursuit of happiness.

In order to stabilize world population, we must eliminate 350,000 people per day.
Jacques Cousteau

American Eugenics Party platform
QUANTITY CONTROL The United States is already over-populated. We must stop all immigration and impose birth controls.

QUALITY CONTROL Those genetic types within each race and stock having better traits will be encouraged to produce more offspring and those having the lesser qualities will be restricted in the number of their offspring.

WHITE DEFECTIVES The caucasians are the controlling race in the world but the reason we do not have a Eugenic Society today is because of interfering, mentally deficient caucasians (White Defectives) in controlling positions (incorrect eugenic programs are a secondary cause). There are White Defectives who propose race mixing, while other White Defectives promote inter-caucasian strife - both prevent Eugenics but in different ways. White Defectives must be removed from controlling positions.

EXPERTS RULE History shows that equal vote for unequal people eventually destroys society. Experts are to be selected through various improved qualification tests; all are eligible to take the tests; more than one expert is to be in each important position; and rotation of leadership among the qualified. Experts make fewer errors in all phases of life. This “civil-service-test” selection of leaders will promote confidence and efficiency.

this whole overpopulation argument is a red herring. overpopulation is a problem in the global south, not in the developed west where all of us live.

in fact, most of the industrialized western countries have the exact opposite problem, which is they are not producing enough babies to replace their populations. if this trend continues it will have disastrous economic and social effects on all of these countries, some of which, ironically enough, used to be catholic (or still are but only in name).

“the wages of sin are death” indeed.

It is not obvious. You are only taking into account one variable. Population. Chronic hunger has many, interrelated causes, all of which could be overcome.

The UN has had an initiative in place since 2002 to eradicate extreme hunger and poverty by 2015. The goal is to cut by half the number of people who suffer from hunger. None of their initiatives involves population control.

I agree. Chronic hunger does have many interrelated causes, and one of the biggest one is overpopulation. It could be overcome, at least by contraception. If that is not enough, people would be forced to resort to abortion.

Eliminate the Useless Eaters

The Nazi philosophy which has taken over health care in the United States through the HMOs, as well as associated pro-euthanasia policies, was identified as early as 1949 in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Leo Alexander, who had worked with the prosecution at the postwar Nuremberg Tribunal devoting to prosecuting the Nazi doctors, put his finger on it: It is the utilitarian attitude which classified some lives as not useful, or, in Hitler’s own words, ``not worthy to be lived.’’

Yeah, that is what it reads like to me too. Let’s not figure out and work at improving people’s lives, lets eliminate the people!

Colonial Legislatures even passed “stubborn children laws,” giving parents the legal right to kill unruly children. Massachusetts enacted a law in 1646 that allowed the death penalty for a rebellious child, though the law was never enforced (“The Society That Pretends to Love Children,” New York Times Magazine, October 8, 1995).

You are not even putting the life of the mother ahead of the child. You are making the life of the mother absolutely worthless. You are saying that if the baby is going to die, then what use is the life of the Mother? Let the mother die too. Is that what Jesus taught you to do?
zerinus
That’s bologna. I’m sorry, but that’s just** bologna**.
An ectopic pregnancy can be treated so as to save the mother. At this point in history, we are unable to save the baby also.
What is wrong, then? What is wrong is poisoning the baby, & /or slicing the baby to bits. The proper way to approach a tubal/ectopic pregnancy, is to remove the tube (or section of the tube) where that tube is about to burst…and to do nothing that would directly kill the baby.
Yes, these babies will almost certainly die, but they will die of natural causes; they will not have been murdered. In the future, these children will, without doubt, be saved in increasing numbers, due to better medical technology & practice.
The woman who died in your story, died because her doctor was unwilling to perform lifesaving surgery. That makes him a singularly **** lousy doctor.
It has nothing to do with what the laws are & are not, in regard to abortion.
It was not bad medical practice. She was told in the hospital that she had an ectopic pregnancy, which meant that she would die if it was not terminated. She was also told that they could not carry out the procedure because it had been made illegal. She had no choice but to go to quack doctor, who had her killed.

zerinus
The doctor at the hospital who refused to operate to save her (without murdering the baby) was a quack doctor, too. Ethical physicians don’t refuse lifesaving medical procedures to patients. Stupid, badly trained so-called “doctors” are the ones who do that…We have a lot of those doctors here in the USA. They are busy:mad: performing abortions for Planned Parenthood & Co.
There was a lifesaving operation available. It was neither illegal not immoral. Some idiotic radical wanted to make a headline for the Culture of Death, & he killed his patients–mother and child–just as surely as if he had:eek: thrown them into the nearest:eek: woodchipper.
That’s not Catholicism, Zerinus; that’s somebody with a degree deciding that making political hay while the sun shines, is a higher priority than saving lives.
If you want to complain, go find out what idiots hired this dolt to work in a hospital. And sue/arrest/picket them.

I forgot to add that abortion rate in Nicaragua before the passing of this law was extremely low anyway; and the above figure is only what is known. The true figure is likely to be much higher.

zerinus
Is abortion approved of in Mormonism?

No.

zerinus
Rubbish. They approve of it under ‘certain’ circumstances.

In 1973, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement regarding abortion, which is still applicable today:

"The Church opposes abortion and counsels its members not to submit to or perform an abortion except in the rare cases where, in the opinion of competent medical counsel, the life or good health of the mother is seriously endangered or where the pregnancy was caused by rape and produces serious emotional trauma in the mother.
