Apparently if one goes into the sewers under Vatican City they are fulled with the bones of new born babies left to die - 'cause the nuns and priests have parties every night but don’t want the world to know.

I was anti-catholic myself when I heard this (ignorance), but that seemed unbelievable. Not just the claim but that anyone would accept it as true.
No. NO. **NO! **Those little skeletons are buried with the silver knives the nuns are given when they kill the babies to be used in the secret Sacrifice! Man! You fuys don’t know nuttin’!

I think it is one thing to pop the anti-Catholic’s balloon by admitting up-front that we are “Papists” but quite another to turn the tables by asking a question like “Which of the myriad anti-Catholic sects are you from?”

Pre-emptive defense is fine. Spitting their own style assault in THEIR faces is not.
I disagree. The question is entirely relevant. There are a large number of different protestant churches and sects and establishing which of these the antagonistic bigot comes from is in my opinion perfectly reasonable.

God bless,

Fair enough. But to label him an antagonistic bigot is just to play his game. Asking him what denomination he comes from is fair. Name calling is not.

I’m not suggesting we call him an antagonistic bigot, that is my description of the individual for the sake of our discussion. I would however, if the CC was being slagged off by this person say something along the lines of …“Is that so, and which one of the myriad of protestant denominations do you claim membership of, or like Martin Luther, did you just decide to start your own?”

This would be said with a smile.

God bless

Hi, rpp!

…I believe that he did not think that you were serious… I took his tone to be that of deflecting the ignorance of those who attack the Church by deflating their animosity through a spin on what they consider a derogatory term.

I agree with you that a negative term should not be embraced even when a positive spin is given… but I think that you and J should go to PM mode and iron out this misunderstanding.

He will not be able to PM me as he is on my Ignore list. I do not converse with those who insist on using profanity. It is too painful. A person must also understand that what is a simple term in one (English speaking country) may be profane in another.

Now, back to the topic, which has nothing to do with profanity.

What on earth are you talking about? At no point have I used profanity butI merely pointed out a way of dealing with those who try to be derogatory to Catholics. As far as your ignore list goes, it must be a pretty long one. Do me a favour. Keep me on it!!!

In a discussion I had awhile back with an ardent non- (and anti) Catholic, this individual was getting frustrated due to my irritating bad habit of pointing to Sacred Scriptures to refute her litany of… well, when you get right down to it… outright lies leveled against The Church.

You know, the usual nonsense they throw at us; we worship Mary and the Saints; there’s no Scriptural basis for Sacramental Confession; the Eucharist is merely symbolic, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

But like I said, her arguments were simplistic and easily dissectable. In her growing frustration she grasped at her final straw; **“Well, you Catholics are the ones who crucified Jesus!” **When I asked her to explain her rather desperate claim, her reasoning was such; “Jesus was crucified by Roman soldiers… and you’re Roman Catholics!”

Of course, I just had to ask her who taught her that. And… sigh… of course, it was her Fundamentalist preacher. Sad, isn’t it?
Well one thing is for sure, If all she is left with is this sort of ignorant retort, you may be getting to her.
Once you can stop laughing, you can easily refute such a claim with the Bible. After which you can continue to avangelize her by your Christian Love and devotion to Our Lord and His Glorious Church.

You may want to ask her, if Christians are known by their Love for each other, how good of Christian is she, and more importantly, how good a Christian is her preacher, when he spreads such blatant and unsupportable lies about fellow Christians.

Peace
James

Oh my - a can-o-worms got opened by the folks who don’t like me calling myself a papist!

Dear, dear rpp - plese don’t be offended by the term or our use of it. It is our choice. If you choose to be offended by bringing to light the small ways of persecution we all suffer by the use of mere words, I can’t imagine how you’d feel if our news services printed all the ways, much larger than this, we of the Catholic faith are actively persecuted on a daily basis. Every day there is Catholic blood spilt all over the globe. This is a fact and it doesn’t take much research to find reports if you know where to look.

I know you are an educated man. Please don’t ever take for granted the religious freedom we live with in this country. It wasn’t always that way and more than one Catholic came here in search of peace and a place to be Catholic in. It doesn’t help if we start finding fault with each other. Save you angst for those who really deserve it.

I think part of the reason I responded to Jimmytwoguns is that I am of Scottish descent, my grandfather coming here in his youth. I am aware that things are very different for us over there, but probably not as aware as Mr. Jimmytwoguns is on a daily basis. I’ve heard tales. I think his being able to blow off some steam at the frustration he must feel being in a sharply divided society and finding this place to be able to do so, should be considered when re-acting to off-color comments.

In all charity, if one is looking for something to be offended about, one won’t have very long to look. If one is looking to find ways to grow in love and fraternity with other Catholics, then that too will be found. We tend to find what we are looking for when communications of this kind occur.

Peace,

Gail

I really rejoice when I hear about Baptists joining the Catholic Church. I was shocked at the anti-Catholic attitudes I encountered by some Southern Baptists. Welcome!

A book that I have found to be very helpful in explaining the Catholic faith is “Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic” by David Currie. Of course it takes a convert to teach us cradle Catholics the faith. It is an excellent book and I would recommend that you give this book to your Baptist families who are resisting your conversion.

Hello JCRICHTON

I think that what my (then) 17 year old mind could not understand is how someone about twice my age was still giving such an ignorant reason for leaving the Catholic church! I don’t think anyone had ever pointed that out to her. I can imagine how I would feel if someone easily pointed out a discrepancy in my ‘reasoning’ that made me sound so ignorant. She didn’t really know the reason her family switched and I probably pulled the rug out from under her. It’s as if she had been brainwashed to give the same explanation - one that made no sense and even put her family in a bad light.

However, situations like this one are what has made me into a researcher of all things Catholic. In recent years I have had to put up with ignorant anti-Catholism but all it did was make me try to find online Catholic websites like this one and good well-stocked Catholic bookstores (like Veritas in Houston). My 160 GB Classic Video Ipod has about 80 GB on Catholic material alone! Nevermind the Catholic books I have! (grin) I don’t seem to have the time to find apologetics classes or bible study at my Catholic church but the videoed apologetics class I found on YouTube and now have on my Ipod has me highlighting my study bible! So many books, online bible study, etc., and so little time. Makes me glad I was born Catholic. I’ll have to tell my mother (father passed in 1997) how glad I am she raised me Catholic.
Hi, Bluehair!

…I was thinking that your friend could have been, subconstiously, critical of her parent’s lack of faith… how they were so readily able to change allegiance for what would seem to her such a tiny amount of goods…

I’ve found that many times when a person is unable to ask for help he/she would fall into such a nonsensical approach… it is as though if they do not ask directly for help, they would be free of all obligations to the person offering the assistance…

I am glad that your experiences (encounters with anti-Catholicism) has lead you deeper into the Faith!

The exchange that really ended the conversation was when I asked which version of the Bible they had been reading. She proudly said “The true bible, the King James.” I picked up a copy of the Douay-Rheims bible and commented, “lets look in this one. This is the unedited version of the King James.” That did it. They were gone.

By the way, I called the nearby Protestant store later and spoke to them. They had the same conversation with the couple about an hour after I did. Same result. They just could not believe it was in Hebrews.

I believe the verse was a segment of "Hebrews 13:5 “I will never forsake you or abandon you.” From what I could find there is a cross reference to Deuteronomy, but not Isaiah. In typical Protestant fashion, he was only interested in part of the verse.
…ah… so the proverbial straw was that you used them fighting words… 😛

…that story reminds me of some incredulous children that ask the same question from as many adults as they can find… it seems that they are searching not for the truth but for a response that agrees with what they have already conceived as the answer to their query!

Hi, Rachel J!

…that’s the beauty of Satan… he pretends to be the Angel of Light while brainwashing even those who think that they are Christ’s disciples… sadly, humans are so willing to hate that it takes very little effort for evil to be disseminated throughout most of human cultures.

Really! I always get from non-Catholics that our priest crucified Jesus because the bible says that the high priest handed him over! 🙂 It’s kinda funny.

my #1: “Catholics are Christians?”
I work with a woman who is generally inoffensive on religious issues and asks me legitimate questions about Catholicism at times. One day, though, she said, “Christians AND Catholics…” When I said, “Catholics ARE Christians,” she said, “Well, you know what I mean.” Hmmm…

I worked with another woman who, knowing I was a practicing Catholic, railed on about how she left the RCC for some generic nondenominational church because, basically, “she’d had enough” of it growing up with her mother. I gritted my teeth and said, “And I left the Baptist church and became Catholic on purpose…” That was the end o’that discussion.

I have never heard the Church equated with Roman soliders before, though…

Hi, Sacred Heart Fan!

Hi, francesca gen!

…some just simply do not know that the Roman Empire was dissolved! Could they be confusing it with the Apostolic Succession? 😛

😉 Not to be uncharitable, but in my observation, the phrase “apostolic succession” would be met with a blank or perplexed stare from most of the Protestant folks I know! And to be fair, I think that some of my lapsed-Catholic relatives would have the same look!

Thankfully I haven’t met with any problems in my family, probably because I’m the only one who goes to any church whatsoever. They think I’m a bit wacky, some of them, but no one gets their knickers in a twist because I left Protestantism for Catholicism. My dad’s family was Catholic and my sisters both married cradle-but-non-practicing Catholics, so it’s not like I’m that exotic. They have some misconceptions, but nothing wildly shocking or offensive.

It’s mostly my workplace that teems with evangelical-type folks; I am grateful that no one has tried to convert me back! You think maybe the tiny crucifix and the St. Michael icon has convinced them it’s hopeless?? 😃

Hi, Francesca!

I’ve been found by many non-Catholics and Peter and the Virgin Mary seem to be on their “quick” reference cards because they almost always gravitate to those two topics (in an attempt to show me how wrong the Church is)…

…your crucifix may be a sign (as you boldly boast about a Crucified Christ) that you are a hopeless Catholic–many seem to be put off by it… no wonder St. Paul was so happy to boast about Christ’s Crucifixion!
