In a discussion I had awhile back with an ardent non- (and anti) Catholic, this individual was getting frustrated due to my irritating bad habit of pointing to Sacred Scriptures to refute her litany of… well, when you get right down to it… outright lies leveled against The Church.

You know, the usual nonsense they throw at us; we worship Mary and the Saints; there’s no Scriptural basis for Sacramental Confession; the Eucharist is merely symbolic, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

But like I said, her arguments were simplistic and easily dissectable. In her growing frustration she grasped at her final straw; **“Well, you Catholics are the ones who crucified Jesus!” **When I asked her to explain her rather desperate claim, her reasoning was such; “Jesus was crucified by Roman soldiers… and you’re Roman Catholics!”

Of course, I just had to ask her who taught her that. And… sigh… of course, it was her Fundamentalist preacher. Sad, isn’t it?

Sounds like more of misapplication of word meaning. I remember in one of my chemistry classes, the teacher was talking about gas/liquid/solid. A student raised her hand and asked “how come the gas I put in my car is liquid, if you are saying it is in the air?”

Actually, this isn’t so surprising. There was a man, I forget his name but his initials are L. B, who wrote a two volume “book” called “Roman Catholicism.” This became the “bible” of anti-catholics. I’ve never read it, but from what I’ve heard about it, I don’t WANT to. Then there is Jack Chick who comes up with some of the weirdest of stuff ever. There are those who will always refuse to believe that there is any good in the Catholic church. sigh And so it goes.

The book you are referring to was authored by Loraine Boettner - published in 1962. I haven’t read it either, but in his book Catholicism and Fundamentalism, Karl Keating shows just how skewed Boettner’s views on the Catholic Church really are. It seems that Roman Catholicism is authored by a master of deception because, while Boettner claims that he has researched such and such a Catholic belief, he actually only gives half the story - the part which suits his own fundamentalist views - then he goes no further. It is such a pity that there are so many anti-Catholic groups out there, distorting the real Catholic Church. I have no problem arguing my faith with a non-Catholic if they are genuinely interested and willing to listen and learn, but I have little respect for those who falsely claim to be giving the ‘full picture’ after much research, when in fact they are twisting the truth to perpetuate their profound and irrational hatred of the Catholic Church.

Why are catholics such a threat that untruths have to be spewed out on the Lord’s day ? Instead, why not worship & avoid gossip. Can you imagine if we went to mass & talked about the different sects instead of worshiping God ? I’ve never heard anything negative from the pulpit, just complements for our separated brethren. For example, the Baptists wouldn’t even let you in their church the way you are dressed. At least they have reverence enough to wear their Sundays best. ( hint, hint ! )

This is kinda odd because most sects gospel is the 5th book in the bible. The Gospel of Rome. Doesn’t that mean they were standing right beside us during the crucifixion ?

Another point. At least this person acknowledges that catholics were around at the time of Christ by the statement made, instead of all the rumors of us being founded in the 3rd, 6th,11th centuries etc., etc., etc.

And I thought this was going to be about Jack Chick 😉

Thats pretty funny never heard that one before.

OK you got me… I thought I heard it all… well I guess the Jewish folks should appreciate it that they are no longer the scapegoat… hmmmm… Did you at least point out that it is The Holy Catholic Church Latin Rite… not Roman Catholic at all? The term Roman was put there by Protestants as an anti-Catholic slur.

I agree that this would be a misapplication of word meaning but one done out of malice, not done out of good will. That student you talked about just misunderstood because of the similarity of words. An unintentional misunderstanding based upon a similarity of words.

I think this would be different, as this would be different from an unintentional misunderstanding.
Such as thinking that Catholics worship Mary and when a Catholic explains that that isn’t done, then retracting the accusation and defending the Catholic view that Mary is not worshipped.

A intentional misunderstanding would be like Hillary Clinton implying that Obama is a Muslim by it all the while knowing that it isn’t true.

This Lady was just grasping for straws and seeking a way to attack the Catholic Church which is impossible if one is honest. That is why she had to resort to dishonesty to attack the Church.

It is unfortunate but sometimes when people are backed into corners like that, they react in crazy ways. I once had a guy screaming at me across a parking lot just because he was stuck and couldn’t logically discuss the faith. This is quite common with non-catholics, I see it often, which is why it is so amusing to talk to non-catholic pastors. If they do not care about truth, at least they are good for some amusement.

God Bless

How about the non-denom preacher in my town who told my wife and daughter that in all of history only eleven Jews made it into heaven. The twelve apostles less Judas. David, Moses, Abraham, etc. were all lost cause they did not know Jesus. I expect he forgot that Jesus was a Jew. I would imagine he would rank Catholics as non-Christians as well, but that never came up. 🤷

Sadly, she is not alone.

I was reading something one time that said that the soldier who pierced the side of Christ was a “poor deluded Roman Catholic” who “saw the light” (and presumably became some form of Protestant) when he said, “He was truly the Son of God.”

Well, we do “re-enact” the Passion on Palm Sunday. Maybe that is where she got the idea.

Insane, I guess she doesn’t understand that we all crucifixed Jesus with our sins, even her own.

But honestly, how can we criticize Protestants when there are so many in our own Church who believe wacky things and half truths?

That’s one thing that really bugs me. The “misinformation” among catholics. Most people know only a tiny bit about their faith. And don’t seem to care about it. Apathy and indifference. I find that real sad. 😦

It’s called LYING FOR JESUS.

I wonder if fundies realize that lies, anger and hate do not come from God. 🤷

Well, people cannot say Jews crucified Jesus anymore. (Which was illogical anyway since all the people on both sides were Jews, except the pagan Roman occupiers.) It is like blaming “Americans” for the American Civil War.

And most Roman soldiers in that part of the Empire were Greeks and Syrians, not Romans.

Ooops !

Typing without thinking again ! I meant to say 5th gospel, 6th book not 5th book. Thanks for glancing or skipping over that post. Highly appreciated.

Well technically, he’s right - we did crucify our Lord by our sins, but so did your friend, by his sins, and every human being past, present and future by theirs. Every agony Christ felt is because of us. The irony is, of course, that by being vehemently angry towards the Church he is helping crucify Christ by accusing others of the crime.

Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins,
Save us from the fires of hell,
and lead all souls to heaven.
Especially those most in need of thy mercy.

These poor chaps must try to wedge some Christianity in amongst all of their anti-Catholicism. We Catholics have the advantage of being Christian 100% of the time. I pray for them as they are stumbling in darkness, lead by the spirit of antichrist.

The whole world knows what they hate. If only we could tell what they love.

I know I should love people like those. But I feel most sorry for all the souls that they lead away from the church. Oh, and then there’s Fred Phelps. He lives in the same town I do. I have to shake my head in wonder everytime I see some of his signs. Even on the side of his “chruch.” It reads: www.godhatesamerica.com. sad, isn’t it? 😦

If anyone is interested it was Longinus. He became a bishop
and a saint.
