I think we’re all reading too much into this “cry room” thing.
People are all different. Some people can handle crying babies and lively toddlers in the Mass, and it doesn’t distract them, and the parents can smile and let all the noise roll off and still get a lot out of the Mass.
Others are extremely bothered by it. Even though they know in their minds that Jesus welcomes the little ones, they are still unable to concentrate on Mass or on the Lord as long as the crying and fussing continues at a loud level.
These people are not condemning children, or advocating abortion, or rejecting the commandments of Christ. They just have a more distractable personality, one that is more bothered by noise. We need to stop seeing evil motives and personality flaws in these people, and stop accusing them of damaging the Church.
We all have to look out for each other and as much as it’s in our power, try to help each other out as we all journey towards the grave. Those who aren’t bothered by noise need to recognize that others are. And those who are bothered by noise need to recognize that others aren’t. We need to accept each other for who God created us to be, and not expect everyone else to be just like us.
My feeling about children is that if they are making the little “baby noises” and talking the sweet baby talk or holding little toddler conversations or playing with toddler toys (little cars, dolls, etc.), that’s fine. But when a child is literally screaming their head off, they should be taken out of a public place and soothed privately. It’s better for the child.
