I think you make a great point; moreover, this is the kind of thinking that Pope Francis is telling us to consider.
Muslims, Jews and Christians did live, work and study together in the Middle East prior to the Jewās conquest of the land what is now Israel from the Palestinians. Same is true for the for their living together in Spain prior to the Spanish Inquisition. In fact, the Jewish cabala has an image of the three religions depicted in a living unity.

So the Muslims and Christians lived together peacefully in Spain before the Inquisition? Tell me, how did the Muslims get to Spain? Was it through peaceful immigration? Or through conquest? How did the Caliphate of Cordoba pop up in Cordoba, Spain in 766 AD? Did the Muslims take Cordoba peacefully in 711 AD? Have you never heard of the Battle of Tours? You know, the battle in 732 AD when Muslimās passed from Spain and into France, which if Charles Martel didnāt stop the Muslimās from advancing would have likely caused Europe to become ruled by Islam?
I imagine that the Muslims got to Iberia the same way the Christian Germanic tribes, Rome, Carthage, and Celts got to Iberia. The only way Muslims could get to Spain, which formed after the Reconquista, would be by peaceful immigration. About the only group that can claim to have peacefully immigrated to Iberia would be the Jews (who by the way were subjected to a similar ādhimmi statusā under Christian rulers).
As opposed to being required to convert to Catholicism or put to death under the rule of the Visigoths.
