The new age movement is satanic at its core

Really, the bottom line here is that anything which leads you away from the God’s Church and its teachings is satanic.

It’s a little overwrought and melodramatic to make an assignation of “satanic” to "anything which leads you away from God’s Church and its teachings.

Satanic, in common parlance, is that which is connected to Satan and satanism.

While satanic can mean a generic “wicked” or “sinful” (and in that sense, I suppose, I understand how you could say that anything sinful is “satanic”)…I do think it borders on histrionics to assign anything which leads away from the Church as “satanic”.

WELL, if it leads us away from the church, it is doing the will of satan, correct? Thus, satanic. I dont mean pentagrams and black masses, which are human inventions. If it leads us from the church, then spiritually at its core it is satanic.

That’s what I said. I guess *everything *could be satanic, if it is not holy.

However, it sounds rather hysterical.

I just don’t think it’s a helpful way of labeling things.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to see Satan in everything that’s not holy. *“I ate fish today for a Friday in Lent and I did not look at the Church with love for making me avoid meat today. That must be Satanic.”
*

Nope. I don’t want to be part of a communion that professes such over-wrought ideations. Thank goodness the Church is wise enough not to profess anything like that.

And does eating meat on Friday pull you away from the church? No, it does not. But the “new agey” stuff DOES. And you have to have common sense. You cannot compare eating meat on friday and the new age.

Having bad feelings towards the Church for inflicting this rule on us does.

Firstly, I am not comparing anything. I am simply applying the rather far-out paradigm: “anything which leads you away from the God’s Church and its teachings is satanic”.

Secondly, it’s not the eating meat that is “satanic” (if we apply this peculiar paradigm)
but rather the feeling mad at the Church for imposing it on us that would be “satanic”.

Thank you, that is exactly my point.

PRmerger, it is my experience and I’m sure that of many others that Satan and his demons do not make grand, apocalyptic style spectacles in order to turn the world against God’s church and her teachings usually. It’s the little attacks using the person’s own weaknesses and inclinations which are most often the catalyst, not some evil, Lavey type tempter urging someone to attend a black mass. The “new age” is just one more of the tools which the Enemy uses to attack the bond between God and humanity and it is very effective given the inroads into faith that have been made. Like the Holy Father has said just recently, Satan can take something that is bad and make it seem good to us to advance his evil purposes. To be quite honest, I believe that we have seen a taste of that right here in this very thread already. That is not over the top or hyperbolic it is just the basic truth of what is happening in the world today.

Thank you, probably could not have said it better.

I don’t disagree with anything you say above.

However, I think it’s really far-reaching to say what you initially said: “anything which leads you away from the God’s Church and its teachings is satanic”

That would mean, as I gave in the example earlier, when someone is annoyed at the Church for imposing abstinence on him, a satanic influence.

That’s simply absurd.

Such histrionics are not a part of my Catholic Church, thank goodness!

Maybe its not worded right, but look at the logic. Demons dont want us to fast, fasting is a great weapon against them. SO, wouldnt they convince us to not fast? And I agree, the statement you keep attacking was not worded the best way, but its point remains.

Yes. It was not worded correctly.

It lends itself to a fanciful and frantic attribution to Satan what ought not be given.

Catholic Answers apologist Jimmy Akin has said on the Catholic Answers Live radio show that it’s a mistake to see Satan behind everything negative.

It’s a form of scrupulosity.

True, true. And I just dont want to discount what he DOES do. But you seem to be fully aware of that, as a faithful catholic, so thus I have no worries there. In my opinion, better scrupulous than dismiss anything that really is satanic as harmless.

There is no need for an either/or here. One does not have to be scrupulous OR see everything that is satanic as harmless.

One can assess and use discernment to find a more reasoned approach.

I agree - gentle discernment and sensibly reasoned thinking - for the most part, although we have to be careful that even this doesn’t go too far the other way and become rationalisation and relativism. And prophets did not do things by halves and neither did Saints and neither, in fact, did Jesus. But even He didn’t speak as if everything known to mankind that is not Godly is down to the devil directly although we can still understand, even if we don’t speak as such, that even foolish error in a sense derives from evil due to worldly imperfection, which stems from a sinful choice originally by A&E (not accident and emergency); some of it though has to go without saying!

Really, the bottom line here is that anything which leads you away from the God’s Church and its teachings is satanic. That includes things which can make you act like a “better person” or “non judgmental” in the eyes of the world.
I’m guessing this is your non judgmental way of telling me how judgmental I am.

Are you familiar with Sharon Lee Giganti? She is on Catholic Answers Live show once a month. She is a former and recovering new ager as well.

That’s one thing I have noticed about those taken with this new age stuff. It gave them license to do what the Church wouldn’t give them license to do. There but for the grace of God go I.
Yes I have heard of her. I’m glad you reminded me of her. I was looking for some new Catholic evangelizers to listen to and she really knows what she’s talking about.

Here is a link to a talk Sharon Lee Giganti gave at a conference. If anyone is interested in watching. She discusses some new age concepts and does a good job of showing how and why new age is dangerous. She’s talking from her own experiences.

OK So far so good … until …

Just to make sure, we’re not going back to the “new age = evil” phraseology. I haven’t read every post in the thread, but I thought we established that the label “new age” is too general and too vague to be calling it a tool of the enemy.

It is only like the Internet is a tool for the enemy. It can be a tool for doing evil, but not necessarily.

Would you say that overall this thread has had a positive impact on you and others? Negative? Not sure or no change? Perhaps the evil displaying itself in subtle forms has given us a chance to test our skills at handling it, in a paradigm with limited risk?

I think a desire for the transcendental is a good thing and an underlying suspicion that there is more to life than the material world. God allows the devil to play because the devil can actually by accident push people closer to God (through suffering) but nothing that is an alternative…to loving God or more specifically loving God through Christ and more specifically loving God through Christ and His Church and more specifically loving God through Christ and His Catholic Church or more specifically loving God through Christ and His Catholic Church and acceptance of His holy Mother or more specifically loving God through Christ and His Catholic Church and His holy Mother and acceptance of the Pope’s authority in the CCC, and other spiritual nourishment needed to make our salvation more certain etc…is beneficial or healthy in itself, rather it is an erroneous assumption to suggest any alternative to The Way, The Truth and The Life is good, because as you can begin to see, going off on a tangent before even any of this divine grace is received, will make time run even shorter, and so evil, in the simple fact that it delays our love for the God who is and entering into deeper relationship with Him via all these means. God doesn’t like us worshipping idols. It is in the commandments: ‘Thou shalt not worship false idols’. :knight2: 🙂
