The number of sick are actually much higher in my area. Lack of testing to confirm cases keeps the count low. A low tally is what the public sees in the local headline but there are in fact there are many more sick and hospitalized.

I wonder if this is purposeful to keep people from getting hysterical.
 
USA is now the global epicentre of this virus.

I cannot understand why we should not take this seriously and be honest and realistic about this virus, people will die, people will recover and have long term lung damage, people are losing their jobs, the global economy is failing, that will effect everyone. no country is in an economic bubble these days,

I started this thread on January 24, it is now how many days since then? Just 2 months into this and look at the mess this virus is sweeping in its wake

No joke

I foresee this going on until the virus burns its way through the population. That will happen before a vaccine is produced and distributed. In the meantime, the majority of people will get back to living and carry on.

Who’s not taking it seriously? Sure, a few dumb kids who think they’re invincible, but who else? The vast majority of people are following the social distancing guidelines. Schools and businesses are closed. Healthcare workers are selflessly going above and beyond. Researchers are working hard to test treatment options. The government has cut a ton of red tape to get things moving quickly. Companies have stepped up to donate or change their factories to produce medical supplies. We’ll get through this. Jesus, I trust in you!

I understand all that you say. Realistically, this thing will burn its way through most of the population. Think of how many people died of tuberculosis, polio, AIDS, etc. before cures or prevention were discovered. The only difference today is wide use of social media. This is the reality that I accept. I’m at peace. We are always in God’s hands.

I was leaving the mechanic today and watching the news (ABC I think it was) where the reporter was discussing with a person who had COVID and is recovering and at the end made a point by saying that most people who get this recover and that the data is showing most will get mild symptoms but those who do get it bad, most will ultimately recover.

This is NOT the kind of hope these stations generally give. They are typically going to send out the doom and gloom because THAT brings in more viewers, so when you get this kind of reporting from typically anti-good-news stations, you know it isn’t as bad as it seems.

And it isn’t a choice between poverty and death, it is a choice between death and more death, and where does that balance lie.

I’m just so tired of hearing, “another 3 cases here”, “another 6 cases here” and “2 more deaths here”, it makes it seem like this is going to ravage billions of people. But when seriously taken as a whole, it is NOT that bad. The doctor at the press conference made this point very clear. The models we have showing 20-22 million will get infected are just models.

The US is now losing 300 people on a daily basis with the highest number of cases in the world. It’s death toll is rising faster than every other nation, it seemed just a few days ago now Donald Trump was downplaying as something that will just go away. Now that doesn’t justify panic but it should be enough proof that this needs to be taken more seriously. We here in New Zealand initiated a lockdown with less that 100 cases, we now have 368 cases a few days later but rather than wait till it gets out of control we shutdown to try and bring down the numbers, the sooner the numbers are brought down the sooner we go back work and the economy functions as it should.

Also it’s no longer Italy that is bad, Spain is now the same and France is just behind that and now the UK is almost there aswell. The Netherlands is another country that is starting to get hit hard aswell as rising cases and deaths in Germany, Ireland and Sweden. Italy was the first to be hit and reacted quite late which is also why it is so heavily hit but that scenario is spreading all across Europe. I’m from Ireland and my family have been in lockdown since this early this week. They were angry Europe reacted too late and tried to put the economy first which now it is suffering for and the economy will aswell. All the US has to do is look at Europe at what NOT to do

The death rate is still not known and I will strongly say that if we had the real number of people infected the ACTUAL death rate would be close to 1%. Please read the statistics if those who have died in Italy. 90% of deaths are over 70 with multiple major health issues.

Just because cases are increasing is no reason to panic. Cases of the cold are 3000 times higher so stop with # of cases.

The more cases the more numbers that are critical, the higher critical numbers then the more pressure on healthcare systems. Europe is overloaded, in London they are in the turning an aircraft carrier into an emergency hospital with 4000 beds and 2 morgues, that should give you an idea how extreme this is. The cold or flu doesn’t cause the health-system to be so overwhelmed that healthcare workers prioritize who they treat while being unable to care for others who then die. The mortality rate isn’t fully known and is said to be between 0.7%-4% however one thing is known, the mortality rate increases if the number of cases overwhelm the hospital system as people who could be saved no longer can be as there isn’t the resources available such as ICU beds.

The point is that far less people will die if the cases are at a manageable level for the healthcare system to tolerate

All along, I have known that USA has more people to lose than anyone because our healthcare system supports more than any other country. We have so many people on prescriptions that China and other countries were producing for us.

This situation we are in is horrible…beyond words.
The real onslaught is still ahead.
I have entertained tuning out all news source outlets. I don’t want to see this. I don’t want to hear it.

I was just talking with a friend being redeployed to the hospital. The unit he is currently in is being turned into an isolation unit.
He has , as with many of the redeployed and those working Covid 19 cases, been given a refresher and training education course. Covid19 kills by solidifying the mucous in the lungs. His advice, give up smoking and vaping any type of substance, including the now legal substances in several states. It is thought there are about 20 strains, not mutations , strains, of this virus. Some are , they believe, deadlier then others and settle in different regions. It is incredibly infectious, just touching a surface it has been on could see a person infected.
I am being globally political with this next statement. We are not getting the entire truth because there are not enough masks and sanitizer to go around. Asian countries have the right idea with masks.

Yes indeed, they did not hit alert initially and there was that poor doctor who died. But that is not the case now. It is a fact USA is the new epicentre and reports out today are of overwhelmed hospitals and lack of medical supplies. I believe It is very unhelpful to continue with an unfounded hypothesis, rather then looking at the reality.

China has found that there are a certain % of recoveries, who when tested again after a little time, are testing positive again.

Several countries are finger pointing each other and claiming this is an escaped lab virus or worse, a biological weapon. Whatever it is, it is having a global impact, bringing home the global nature of us now, in part due to social and internet media developed initially by ARPA.
