The One Place on Earth Not Destroyed in ‘2012’

**For “2012,” Emmerich set his sites on destroying the some biggest landmarks around the world, from Rome to Rio. But there’s one place that Emmerich wanted to demolish but didn’t: the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure located in the center of Mecca. It’s the focus of prayers and the site of the Hajj, the biggest, most important pilgrimage in Islam. **

**“Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit,” the filmmaker told scifiwire.com. “But my co-writer Harald [Kloser] said, ‘I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie.’ And he was right.” **

Emmerich has no qualms about wrecking other major landmarks, however. The massive dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican rolls on top of a crowd of churchgoers. The huge Christ the Redeemer statue that looms over Rio de Janeiro disintegrates.

In the movie he’ll destroy:

The White House

The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican

St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican

Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro

but he’s afraid to blow up the Kaaba in his movie fearing fatwa’s…

What a wuss!

dumb duh dumbda

I highly doubt that what ever cataclysmic maelstrom the universe has planned for us in 2012 will be so sensitive to the Religion of Peace.

I can’t say that I blame them for being unwilling to destroy the Kaaba in Mecca on camera. It’s a piece of fiction, and if it would cause more heartache for them, better not to do it. Do we know if the Vatican planned to raise a fuss over the dome of St. Peter’s crushing people?

Besides…just because one implies that everything is destroyed doesn’t mean that the plot doesn’t suggest that. If he went around destroying EVERY sacred site, it would be a long, boring movie with a massive special effects/visuals budget.

I hate to think that Americans are beginning to be afraid to insult people. We’ve been happy to do it for a few hundred years :D:p:thumbsup:😉

The media, David Letterman, movie stars and producers, comedians, atheists and artists think nothing of bashing Christianity. But not one will say a peep about Islam. Hey Ron Howard, how about a movie about Islam?

is there a fatwa on Matt Stone and Trey Parker?
they’ve depicted Mohammed several times on South Park

Emmerich just doesn’t have the b___s

I, for one, am willing to take him at is word.

Those of you who think he is a wuss, when was the last time a fatwa was issued in your name? Retribution from the other side has been indiscriminate in the past. How responsible would it be for someone to create a movie, knowing it would offend people to the point of violence, only for innocent people to suffer?

Leave him alone, and choose your battles more wisely.

well, the wrong part here is Emmerich isn’t afraid to offend Catholics by destroying a statue of Jesus and the Vatican but is afraid to offend Muslims

he can just go and say, “i think offending the religious beliefs of people is wrong” and then went on to not depict anything that has religious significance being destroyed, then i would have respect for him

but for him to think twice about depicting destruction on Catholic structure but reluctance to do the same for Muslim structure is just pure bigotry on his part. why does he think its okay to do this to Catholics and not to Muslims? just because there are no radical Catholics who would drive a car bomb into his home?

its like saying, you’re not going to rip on black people but instead just rip on North Koreans because they’re communist scum. it doesn’t make you less racist

Yes, he and his colleagues have seen what happened to Theo Van Gogh, (famous name right there). The man was killed by islamists for producing the short film “Submission”.

And then we have the Dutch cartoonist who although was not killed, the muslims went crazy world wide with this issue.

And the Salman Rushdie satanic verses book, that has this man running for close to 2 decades now because there is death fatwa out for him.

And the British school teacher somewhere out there whose students named their class teddy bear mohamad.

And I’m sure there is more… the author who wrote the Jewel of Medina could not publish her book…

And you have Geert Wilders with Fitna… he is hiding just like Theo.

Blah, blah, blah, blah…
Those of you who think he is a wuss, when was the last time a fatwa was issued in your name?
He is a wuss ~ if he will stand and distroy Christian landmarks, why the heck not islamic.

What, you don’t think it’s going to offend Christians, the Vatican?

Do you think we will riot, kill, take to the streets and burn cars & buildings and kill their movie executies and personel. Heck NO!
Leave him alone, and choose your battles more wisely.
He is a WUSS! If he is going to do a “doomsday” movie well then, all is fair.

He’s afraid of what he knows about the “religion of peace” and what they do. He’s no fool.

And he knows the Vatican will do nothing. And good for the Vatican.

It’s only a stupid movie and EVERYTHING offends muslims and islam.

Agreed!

Oppie isn’t going to do a movie on islam, that’s for sure.

Hi there Ralph,

No sure how to read your post.

This is a movie.

If this creator of this movie has no problem blowing up & distroying Christian landmarks well then why the heck not go after the dome of the rock or kabba.

He is a wuss!

I know exactly what episode you are speaking about and there were no riots from the muslims.

BTW, I did like that episode… 😛

Yes, Emmerich is a wuss.

So far there aren’t too many people standing up and speaking out because they fear the repercussions of islam, you know, the religion of peace.

PC’s will be the end of many of us.

I think this story says more about Islam (or the perception of Islam) than it says about the director. Although it does say a lot about the director.

God bless

that is why i respect Matt and Trey even though they tend to be offensive sometimes but at least they show that if they’re going to bash one group, they’re willing to bash all groups and they will do it

by the way, are you talking about Super Best Friends?

Yes, SBF was great… ! And funny as well. 😃

choy, I am offended by bigotry, but stupidity shouldn’t be treated the same way.

jakasaki, nice, but you didn’t answer either of my questions.

People like me were the ones who had to deal with these islamic lunatics whenever they acted, and they would find any excuse to do anything. Fallout like this is what we have to deal with whenever someone feels the need to “make a point”.

Find something more important to complain about.
my point is if he’s not afraid to bash one religion, he shouldn’t be afraid to bash any religion. otherwise, just don’t bash anyone at all. and thats where bigotry comes in. they’re willing to depict Catholic structures being destroyed but not Muslim structures. he’s affraid to offend Muslims but doesn’t think twice about the feelings of Catholics. thats whats wrong in this picture. we’re not asking that he should depict the destruction of Muslim Holy Sites, but if he’s willing to do that for one religion then he shouldn’t pull back on other religions. or otherwise, don’t do it at all.

Great point, Rick. I read this article today and think Emerich is a real loser for buying into this “I’m afraid of a fatwa” mentality. Quite frankly, why couldn’t he have just shown secular buildings being destroyed? There are plenty of buildings, bridges, damns, towers, monuments and other edifices he can destroy if that’s his wish. Why show ANY religious buildings whether they be Christian, Jewish, Muslim or otherwise getting destroyed? Hilarious! He doesn’t want to be another Salmon Rushdi evidently! LOL Ron Howard and that jerk author Dan Brown wouldn’t have the guts to write a book that makes historical fiction around Muhammad and his clan!:eek::eek:
