I know one more thing the movie will get wrong. The world doesn’t end in 2012 except those who will die in 2012. -nuff said.

It was a joke. For years, Americans had a reputation of not caring who we offended. It was not exactly off-base: we did not consider these things. 40 years ago, the movie would have had the whole thing crumble.

Now, Americans worry about offending men and not about offending God

They will when their life ends when they stand before God. Let them continue to offend God, and they will pay the consequences.

Really, can we all stop pretending as though this is an acceptable situation? “Oh, well, he just doesn’t want to risk inflaming a bunch of dangerous idiots”. Yeah, well…that’s kind of a no-brainer, but as far as the world Muslim population is concerned it’s pretty clear that the lunatics are running the asylum, and the much lauded but seldom seen “peaceful Muslims” are also busy being scared or otherwise just don’t care. I personally don’t think a movie is something to freak out about either way (he could’ve replaced the shots of the Vatican falling apart with more shots of people running away from tidal waves or some other nonsense like there always are in these movies), but really…when something like this happens it shifts the focus from the content and context of the media and onto the demands of a bunch of crazy nutbags we shouldn’t be placating in the first place.

EVERYTHING, I repeat, EVERYTHING has the capcity to inflame the Islamists, and they are masters at propaganda. No doubt some pea-brained Imam out there will seize upon the fact that only the Kab’a is left standing as evidence of the growing influence of Islam in the West. So they win on two fronts: they get to have their iddy-biddy widdle “feelings” protected from the big bad world where no one respects Islam any more than any other faith, and they get more material to feed their egotistical delusions that Islam is this great and powerful force of truth. Oooo, look, we stopped a movie from filming a scene that might have made someone cry and we didn’t even have to do anything! I guess it was worth killing several people over some cartoons after all!

Never underestimate the power of a nasty reputation. And yet we are still fed by the very same media machine that made this piece of garbage movie that Islam is somehow “the religion of peace”…yeah…right. Whoever al-umWAAAAAAH have working in their PR campaign is better than a million P.T. Barnums. :rolleyes:

Personally, I would have shot the scene, put it in there, and dared the lunatics to come get me and the peaceful Muslims to put their money where their mouth is.

That may just be the Alabamian in me talking. We tend to be less scared than many other Americans. That happens when you live in a “right to carry” state. Or it may be the 6’, 240 pounds of me talking.

as Catholics we should always be prepared
 
Does anyone actually consider the fact that, by and large, Catholics are much more free with their iconography? Churches, statutes, artwork, etc are fairly common for Catholics. For Islam, it is precisely the opposite. There are virtually no icons or depictions of significant religious artwork. Many in Islam would take it a step further and have no iconography at all of any kind. The notion, therefore, of of having a holy site like the Kabaa which is so central that every Muslim man with the means must visit it (the Hajj) rendered into CGI and then destroyed would justifably incense them, and would lead some to take extreme action. So if Emmerich is doing a little CYA…fair play to him.

Some of the terms being associated with Muslims (“lunatics”, “militaristic”, sarcastic use of the term “Religion of Peace”) are really disconcerting and portray more of an us/them mentality than what the Church would seem to be espousing, particularly with the Holy Father’s outreach to Islam.

Still…if you want write a nastygram to Roland Emmerich for blowing up St. Peter’s and for not blowing up the Kabaa, that’s your perogative. I’m sure he’ll read it and consider it thoughtfully for his next picture.;

What you are missing is the fact that their rules do not govern anyone else. In fact, Islam teaches that their rules are not to govern us. Further, Muslims are quick to say that there is no compulsion in religion. IF that is true, then there should be no fear from any Muslim for doing this

That’s not being a ‘wuss.’ That’s being smart…and understanding that Christianity and the USA isn’t going to issue a holy war against him, and send terrorists after him (convinced that killing him will get them instant admittance into heaven) because of movie special effects.

It’s actually quite a compliment to Catholicism and America, when you think of it…and an incredible insult to Islaam. I wish it were not a deserved insult.

thats not smart, thats bigotry. that you think its okay to depict such destruction on one religion but think its not correct to do the same on another religion for whatever reason. when you start measuring similar things with different standards, thats where intollerance comes in.

you can insult Christians but not Muslims
you can insult Arabs but not Blacks
etc.

i’m not suggesting that we should start insulting everyone. but if we’re going to pull our punches on one group, then that reason should apply to all similar groups.
 
I look at this whole issue this way:
  1. ~ Many people on the globe have this 2012 doomsday in their heads. So this movie comes out.
  2. ~ islam claims that the end of times, Jesus will down to earth, break all of the crosses, destroy Christianity and make islam the religion of the globe.
  3. ~ this movie comes out and guess what, it destroys Christian symbols and does not touch islamic symbols
  4. ~ this gives islam the upper hand to say, yup we told you Christianity will be destroyed and islam will dominate
  5. ~ now you have a bazillion islamics with a chip on their shoulders shaking their finger at Christians as if saying… “see we told you so” and to them it’s going to be like some sort of prophecy come true
That’s how I see it. It’s only a stupid movie and I can seperate movies from reality.

To me, it does not matter what Christian symbol is blown up or burned down to the ground. It will never change me and my faith and I will not cause chaos.

(I’m in college right now) and in the library there is a quaran, but it is only written in Islamic language.
