Of course I do read the threadhistoryb. do you ever know whar ypu are talking about and what is the Chirsh of Mary
I eat His flesh every week. I think the real reson you left is you got mad at something a priest or a bisop or the Pope said, and rther than submit to the Church founded by Christ you high tailed it out of there. That woulkd explain your arrogance and bitterness.I know better than you, I left to return to Christ.
Jerome was not the final authority. That is why after the councils of carthage and hippo he accepted what the Church taught. This should say volumes more than what ever he wrote before the councils. No, your statment is completely false.
Read the article at newadvent and let me know what you think.
As for the Tridentine council fathers…some sided with Jerome, some didin’t but nonetheless there was a large undercurrent hostile to accepting the dc’s as canonical.
Heck, even the major scriptural commentary from the middle ages (glossa ordinaire) was negative to the dc’s canonocity.
Going back to the time of the earlier councils, the Vulgate was sent out complete with Jeromes prologues to the dc’s which clearly rejected the dc’s canonocity.
What you saw in practice that drove you away from the Church does not mean the Church is evil. Remember Jesus said do what they say but do not do what they do. I am sorry you were driven away by the actions of certain individuals and i hope you return soon:thumbsup:I am anything but ignorant I was in there for ten years and a Marian advocate. While you can sit there all pompous and dictate about the RCC the gulf between official dictate and practice is huge.
See you assume that anybody that attacks your scared cows doesn’t know what they are talking about, this shows vast ignorance on your part
Jerome wasn’t the final authority, nor were the two provincial councils of Hippo and Carthage. Even from a Catholic perspective they were only provincial councils.Jerome was not the final authority. That is why after the councils of carthage and hippo he accepted what the Church taught. This should say volumes more than what ever he wrote before the councils.
This period exhibits a curious exchange of opinions between the West and the East, while ecclesiastical usage remained unchanged, at least in the Latin Church. During this intermediate age the use of St. Jerome’s new version of the Old Testament (the Vulgate) became widespread in the Occident. With its text went Jerome’s prefaces disparaging the deuterocanonicals, and under the influence of his authority **the West began to distrust these and to show the first symptoms of a current hostile to their canonicity. **Bill , we are on the same side here. The article says that the Deuterocananicals were “addad” at Trent, which is not true.

The New Catholic Encyclopedia points out,
Cite“According to Catholic doctrine, the proximate criterion of the Biblical canon is the infallible decision of the Church. This decision was not given until rather late in the history of the Church (at the Council of Trent). Before that time there was some doubt about the canonicity of certain Biblical books, i.e., about their belonging to the canon.”

The cannon was unsettled from the time of Jerome to Trent in Catholicism. Many, many Cathilic churchmen sided with Jerome. It was not until Trent that the matter was settled. Long after the Jews closed their cannon and after the Protestants closed their cannon. This is one of those great posts where the Catholic-haters actually fortify my faith in the Catholic Church due to their total ignorance and inability to use facts for their argument.
The Catholic Church gave the world the bible, and now the fallen away have tried to rewrite history to say otherwise.
***I’d rather trust them then the church of Mary *** Come on, seriously, I would dare you to mock Jesus to his face if you could and say that to him. Will you mock him and call him the son of Mary? Because that’s what he is.
And you’re right, Jerome in and of himself was not the final authority, the CHURCH is. And you affirm that authority every time you read the words of the bible and proclaim them inspired. You do not have a bible without the Catholic Church. Period. There was no bible for almost 400 years. If you were alive then, what would you be basing your beliefs on? Think about that honestly.
You are like a rebellious child who denies the parents that raised him. You need to reconcile with God and his Church or you will always be filled with this mocking hate.

Protestants do not have a cannon. You have a hack of our cannon. If you claim that you have a cannon, isn’t it odd that the Catholic Church arrived at the same conclusion about all the New Testament books 1000+ years before you did. Doesn’t that kind of tell you something? At what counsel did “Protestants” close their Cannon? Are you refering to Martin Luther…does that mean you extend infalibilty to him? BTW can you find a copy of the bible prior to the reformation that has a different cannon than the one the Catholic Church uses today? No you cannot. The Cannon did not change at Trent and that is proven by the fact that every single bible from the first one on is identical to the ones after Trent. Trent merely made a statment that the cannon was not changing. There is deception in stating otherwise.
I would love to design an experiment to debunk the idea of “sola scriptora” once and for all.
I wish we could take a large sample of non-denominational, bible-only believers and place them in controlled experiment where they were given a drug that gave them temporary memory loss so that they would not be able to remember which books are in the KJV bible.
Then, we would have them read all of the books of the New and Old Testament AND also all of the hundreds (maybe there were thousands) of writings that were around in the first centuries of Christianity that claimed to be scripture, but that the Catholic Church rejected when forming the cannon. Basically every piece of writing that the Catholic Church sifted through and studied before choosing the cannon as we know it today.
Then each person would have the task of deciding which books were in fact scripture and inspired by God and should be part of the cannon.
I am willing to bet there would be a differing of opinion, which debunks the myth that scripute is self-affirming. Then maybe people would finally see that Holy Spirit guided the Catholic Church and ONLY the Catholic Church in choosing scripture.
Hisalone;5529682:
Well, let’s see. The Vulgate was sent out w/ Jerome’s prologues to the deutero’s which rejected their canonocity. The dc’s were clearly contained within the bindings of the Vulgate but at the same time rejected by Jerome’s commentary.BTW can you find a copy of the bible prior to the reformation that has a different cannon than the one the Catholic Church uses today? There isn’t a “Protestant Church” to open or close anything. For Lutherans, technically the canon is not closed, though it is for all intent and purposes. I have no idea what other western Christian traditions have done regarding the canon.quote=Hisalone;5529682] Long after the Jews closed their cannon and after the Protestants closed their cannon.
Were there not variances in eastern (Orthodox) Bibles, also?Well, let’s see. The Vulgate was sent out w/ Jerome’s prologues to the deutero’s which rejected their canonocity. The dc’s were clearly contained within the bindings of the Vulgate but at the same time rejected by Jerome’s commentary.
Well the comment was three pages in and is by no means a record for the golden* “yea well at least I don’t worship Mary”* come back to be introduced. Even I was surprised to see Mary come up in this thread though. Is your position so fragile that you must lower yourself to such polemics? Or is a constructive dialog beyond your Christian charity?I’d rather trust them then the church of mary
