👍 Cheap polemics come from all directions, and it simply hurts dialogue. There are many of us on both sides that can dialogue uncounted posts and never resort to this.

Jon
Jon I missed that second comment. We often times do not see the things that… we don’t want to see. Both sides can be very good witnesses of the charity of Christ and both sides can equally be poor witnesses.

Jon I started a thread on the term evangelical. If you find the time I would like to see your thoughts on it.

God bless you

I think there were but am not sure what you are getting at.
MercyMia said,
BTW can you find a copy of the bible prior to the reformation that has a different cannon than the one the Catholic Church uses today? No you cannot.
I was simply adding to your response that it seems there were Bibles with different canons prior to the Reformation.

I see.

Some, such as MercyMia, seem to think history provides a very sanitary means of conducting apologetics…it doesn’t…for either side.

My desire is to show people the truth. The New Catholic Encylopedia print edition. If you follow the link.
I followed your link, and the specific phrase you cited about the council of Trent came from the Protestant site Alpha and Omega. But when i looked in the Catholic Encyclopedia nowhere is that phrase found. hmmmm:rolleyes:

***I’d rather trust them then the church of Mary *** Come on, seriously, I would dare you to mock Jesus to his face if you could and say that to him. Will you mock him and call him the son of Mary? Because that’s what he is.
I will and would not mock Christ, The RCC has nothing to do with Christ. I have it from this very forum that Catholics worship Mary. Your right it’s not the Church of Mary, but it is the church of Idolatry.
To be honest, I believe that Catholicisim is the one true religion and Protestants ( I even hate that term as if it was a threat to another religion) miss out on the worship of the Blessed Virgin.

nice. Way to take someones poor word choice as dogma. The Church has everything to do with Jesus Christ. Christ is the center of everthing we do. YOu claim to be a former Catholic. If this is true, then you never learned anything about what the Church truly teaches.

I just went back and looked at you post Please explain what you said that the RCC has nothing to do with Christ.

Because it is not a Christian organization, just a pretender an anti-Christ

The link is from A/O the quote is from the Catholic Encyclopedia print edition which is a multi volume set. William Webster uses the same quote footnoting it #22 citing source.

the-highway.com/scripture1_Webster.html

The point is that claims that the Catholic Cannon was settled prior to Trent are unfounded as there was disagreement and controversy until Trent, after Trent no disagreement nor controversy.

Because at one time I was catholic, self deceived. As it always is with periodicals I returned home to Christ
Yes I can see your charity has taken a turn for the better now that you are no longer Catholic…

God bless you

So what specifically made you change your mind? Was it a specific event or a gradual change of opinion? I’m not asking to be rude i really want to know.

hahahahahahahahha William Webster? You want me to trust a quote that comes from William Webster? I’ve looked everywhere and the only person claimed that quote from the New Catholic Encyclopedia was William Webster. No one else. I don’t even think its really accurate. Maybe i should find a New Catholic Encyclopedia and read it myself before i defect to what William Webster says. I think I need a coffee. :compcoff:

Go to www.newadvent.org (the old Catholic Encyclopedia) and read their article on the canon of the OT. You will find pretty much the same thing.

Trent was the first infallible declaration of the OT canon. The OT canon was certainly not settled before Trent.

You know, I spend an significant amount of time here at CAF confronting folks who take Luther’s words and twist them, or take them out of the context of his time, or improperly use private letters he wrote as doctrine.
Here, you do the same thing. This person does not speak for the Catholic Church. This is no statement of doctrine. To imply that it is is simply disingenuous. But I’ll leave you with Luther’s commentary on the Eighth Commandment to ponder:
The Eighth Commandment.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
What does this mean?–Answer.
We should fear and love God that we may not deceitfully belie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but defend him, [think and] speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything.
Jon

JohnNC I will admit to being very frustrated by the posters on here and perhaps my words came out harsh. My frustration is with the poster who claimed there was a “Protestant” cannon that was finished before the Catholic one. There is no such thing as a “Protestant” cannon as there is no such thing as a Protestant Church per say, rather thousands and thousands of churches that are not affiliated with each other. You have the decency to come on here and represent your church affiliation honestly and share your opinions reasonably, and trust me it is appreciated. Meanwhile, these posters do not have the valor to even say what denomination they associate with - so I use the generic term Protestant that they have chosen to use to define themselves here.
