The Oscars are going vegan

blackforest showing evidence he either did not read or else understand my posts (that could be my fault btw).
First, I’m female.

Second, I didn’t realize that we can now see World News-category posts in the main forum. It’s too bad - life was much easier with this cesspool was hidden from the main view.

But now that I’m entangled in this thread, yes, I caught your point that somehow the meal-planning for this party and Phoenix’s attitude about it was somehow indicative of a vast Leftist conspiracy to impose those awful vegan beliefs on the world.
This is part of the plan leftists have in their mind regarding THEM making YOUR choices for YOU.
The problem is your misunderstanding of what Phoenix is saying. He is simply indicating that our food choices are about much more than whether or not we like what we’re eating. He’s right. And the Church teaches that he’s right.

http://w2.vatican.va/content/john-p.../hf_jp-ii_enc_04031979_redemptor-hominis.html
Man often seems to see no other meaning in his natural environment than what serves for immediate use and consumption. Yet it was the Creator’s will that man should communicate with nature as an intelligent and noble “master” and “guardian”, and not as a heedless “exploiter” and “destroyer”.
And Laudato Si details how our individual choices have an impact on the planet.

Americans, including American Catholics, bristle their fur and get really uncomfortable with the slightest criticism of consumerism or individualism. But the Vatican hasn’t been afraid to call out the perils of either one.

How you go about caring for the planet with your food choices, (or any consumer choices), is a matter of prudential judgment. For some people, it’s a vegan diet. For others, it involves hunting their own game or supporting small, local meat suppliers.

In the meantime, take a deep breath and calm down. Phoenix isn’t clamoring for any policy initiatives that will force a vegan diet on you.

And nobody’s going to snatch your medium-rare sirloin out from under your drooling mouth. . . except maybe your dog, if you have one. 🐶

In the spirit of continuing my avoidance of the World News forum, I’m now muting this thread.

More pasta for me then !! 🍝 😉

It you invited me to a party, I would graciously accept what you made.

My sister is gluten free for medical reasons. I don’t expect bread at her home.

I’m old now but when I was in high school…the first time we were served food by the school…every Friday was meatless. This was to accommodate our Catholic population. In those days, Catholics still had to refrain from meat on Fridays.

I don’t remember anyone ever bringing up leftist conspiracies to control our choices nor thinking the government was doing so either. How is a meatless Monday any different than meatless Friday’s were?

blackforest.

Thanks.

Sorry about that.

If I ever forget (hopefully I won’t but if I do) just correct me again.

Very funny mischaracterization of what I said blackforest.

Absolutely irrelevant for this thread (unless YOU are attempting to apply this here).

For everybody else:

Do you remember anyone who was influential in Hollywood saying . . . . ? . . . .
“I think now consuming animal products is no longer just a personal choice”?

I don’t consider anyone from Hollywood to be influential in the first place. That seems to be your fear, not mine.

I am going to disagree with you despite you avoiding answering my question.

The Arts are used quite sucessfully to influence cultures and I think
the denial of that fact is very naive.
But that is my mere opinion.

If the idea of eating vegan does spread then it is no longer being “forced” on society. It is adopted by society. For those who want to oppose the spread of such ideas, the appropriate course of action is not to complain about the idea getting a hearing in the first place. The appropriate course of action is to oppose that idea on its merits with competing ideas. In the case of eating vegan, that would mean presenting the value of eating meat, or the invalidity of the arguments about meat-eating causing harm to the environment. That is the way to go. But complaining that veganism is just another example of a vast progressive conspiracy or power grab…not so good.

.

Ask yourself if there has been any criticism of the people who want to ATTACK his “personal choice” from LeafByNiggle.

Go back and re-read all of LeafByNiggle’s posts and . . .

. . . See if the Leaf criticism is aimed at Joaquin Phoenix too (the same Joaquin Phoenix who wants to to ATTACK and UNDERMINE LeafByNiggle’s “personal choice” in this sphere).

Or if the Leaf criticism is aimed just against me (who is attempting to PRESERVE and DEFEND LeafByNiggle’s “personal choice”).

It is just mystifying behavior to me that people do this against themselves.

Then draw your own conclusions.

A change in one of my premises.

The fallacy of equivocation.

Easier to make a case against a false argument.

Here is the real premise.

In my opinion, people who support government restrictions on smoking should not be complaining about the Oscars.

Maybe you will change you mind when “Meatless Tuesday” gets added, or meatless lunches get foisted upon the kids’ lunch programs. Or if a “Green meat tax” gets assessed upon YOU.
School lunch is an entirely different issue than a tax on meat. But on those two issues;
  1. taxpayers and voters should control what the local school lunchrooms serve. Go to the school board meeting. Run for school board.
One thing school districts will respond to is students not buying school lunches. They lose funding. It takes parents to just not buy school lunches. Encourage those who get free or reduced lunches to not buy lunches. Get people together to prepare lunches for kids who need them but agree not to sign up for subsidized lunches. The loss of funding will completely change their attitude.
2). Meat taxes? The overwhelming majority of Americans eat meat. A green meat tax can be rightly characterized as a regressive attack on the middle and lower taxes.
The wealthy in Hollywood May virtue signal on tv, but at home they can afford to do what they want. Two weeks from now, prime rib sales among the rich will continue.

But I am not worried about people who are or are not “vegan”.

You are missing the whole point.

But my point isn’t reducible down to school lunches and meat taxes.

My point has to do with other people having ideas that think it is OK to control YOU and YOUR “personal choice” to eat meat or to not eat meat.

And there are some very influential people who do not think you should have a “personal choice”.

And I am saying these are dangerous ideas. It is naive to assume people who think in a “worldview” like that want to stop at your meat choices.

Do you have trouble getting meat to eat where you live?
I’m guessing no.

Assuming I guessed correctly, then what’s the problem?

OK, so there isn’t any problem then. You’re just getting all worked up over an imaginary problem.

See you later, I’m about to go out for some dinner, containing meat.
