The picking-up some Pampers or a gallon of milk Mass?

I’m glad to hear that. Because the worst thing I can imagine is turning someone away from Mass because of their outward appearance. I think Our Lord would be a bit upset about that. Don’t you? 😦

That lack of certainty and the resulting insecurity all too often manifests as defensive behavior. We are seeing some of that here.

That would depend. For the most part I would agree. However I remember for instance being an usher when a guy appeared wearing a very loud and offensive t-shirt touting the death metal band Deicide while wearing an AC/DC hat which he refused to remove.

I took him aside and told him to either cover his shirt or turn it inside out and to take off his hat unless there was some sort of physical matter that required him to have it on. He complied. No, I don’t think God would be upset for not allowing someone to advertise Deicide in His House, particularly when there were options.

You say the T-shirt was loud and offensive. Was the person wearing it also being loud and offensive?

If not, then I don’t think it was any of your business.

I just reject the notion that there is not time to change clothes because that pretty much seems to be the universal excuse.

I disagree. Then again you didn’t see the t-shirt. Was I also wrong to ask him to take his hat off? Or is wearing a hat in church by a male not covered by the same excuses that shorts, short skirts, tank tops, revealing blouses and horrid t-shirts are?

Sorry, I did not realize that you held a position of authority in your parish that allows you to dictate to others what they should or should not wear as they come through the doors. I thought you were just an ordinary layperson in the pews, like me. 🙂
 
I think I’ll wear my “Death in June” t-shirt tomorrow and claim I didn’t have enough time to those who like to be nosy and controlling.
 
It’s the nosy and judgmental people that keep others away from the church and/or leave a bad taste for others.

During a foolish moment in my life of scrupulosity, I noticed an older gentleman constantly chewing on some form of candy during the mass and then receiving communion. For some reason, I thought he was committing a serious sin (I am aware of the fast) and needed to make it my business. So, I confronted him and I found out he has diabetes and this was necessary for him.

Lesson learned. You never know. Focus on the mass.
 
I remember standing in the patio of our parish before Mass trying to collect my thoughts before entering church several years ago. A vehicle pulled-up with a family I know. 3 teens – a boy and two girls. The parents and the girls were clearly ready for Mass. The boy was not. He was wearing baggy swim trunks, a wife-beater t-shirt and flip-flops. His mom was holding out a grocery bag with clothes in it asking him to please get ready to no avail.

His dad (a good friend) ordered him to get ready. I watched the kid kick off his sandals, yank on a pair of khaki pants, step into some deck shoes and slide into a long sleeved button-down shirt his mom held out for him. His dad then tossed him a blue blazer and ordered him to put it on which he did. His dad then told him to comb his hair, he didn’t have a comb so his dad lent him his.

In less than 2 minutes this kid went from slob to very nicely dressed. TWO MINUTES. Yes, his mom no doubt spent a few minutes preparing the shopping bag but still, TWO MINUTES! I will always remember that.

Actually I think it’s the slovently dressed people that have helped to drive people away from the Mass by making it appear ever less special in so many peoples’ eyes.

In that instance I was an usher and it was my responsibility to have that person remove his hat and do something about his t-shirt.

(Interesting how you dodged my hat question.)

That’s OK. The ushers today would still make you cover it or turn it inside out.
 
If this forum would have existed 50 years ago, I wonder who people would have said if a woman would have complained about having to bobby-pin a Kleenex to her head because she forgot to bring a proper head covering?

That would have been most amusing.

Only true to those who have already decided to be distracted from the Mass. Focus on the Mass, not the mass.
