There is more than enough religious anger in the world. So it is particularly disturbing that Pope Benedict XVI has insulted Muslims, quoting a 14th-century description of Islam as “evil and inhuman.”

In the most provocative part of a speech this week on “faith and reason,” the pontiff recounted a conversation between an “erudite” Byzantine Christian emperor and a “learned” Muslim Persian circa 1391. The pope quoted the emperor saying, “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”…

The world listens carefully to the words of any pope. And it is tragic and dangerous when one sows pain, either deliberately or carelessly. He needs to offer a deep and persuasive apology, demonstrating that words can also heal.

My view is no, he does not, he said nothing to apologize for. To apologize for this would be to send the signal that nothing is correct if someone violently objects to it. That is NOT what Christ’s message was.

These radical Moslem clerics that are stirring up the Moslem populations simply do not want the Pope visiting their countries. They do not want their people to see what a really holy man looks like. To prove how holy and peaceful Islam is these same clerics will incite riots to burn Christian churches and even kill a few Christians if necessary.

Definitely no. It is time we stand up to the Muslims.

How can anyone have read the entirety of the Holy Father’s remarks and conclude it was an attack on Islam? Islam has been running under a “false flag” for years. It is not a religion of peace. They attack the Holy Father’s lecture- note that people, a lecture- and take away one of our fundamental rights as a free people. What? Was the HF supposed to run his lecture before the imams for “correct speech”?

Wake up Christians! Sleepers awake!

I find it interesting that the Muslims have actually done just what the emperor challenged: “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”…

By their violent riots and church bombings they prove his point. No Imam has yet brought forth anything new Muhammed brought that was actually good.

And where are the editorials calling for the Imams to apologize for their people calling for the murder of the pope?

T H A N K - Y O U ! 👍

How can this part of the discussion possibly stay out of the editorials? I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the last attempt at murdering a Pope come from a Muslim?

They failed that time, and, God willing, they’ll fail this time too…
BUT WE NEED TO BE PRAYING FOR OUR POPE !!

A religion of peace, such as Islam claims to be, should have the overwhelming majority of its leaders coming out in force to exhort their people not to be violent and murderous, as they have been in the past, in the wake of this media event.

Will we see that happen?

No.

The so-called religion of peace, Islam, by and large threatens violent retaliation for any insult, actual or perceived. This IS in fact evil. Be honest!

Please pray for our Pope, that he be strengthened and protected against these vicious enemies of Christ.

The Pope does not owe anyone an apology for speaking a truth.

Praying for the Pope and us all. These people are trying to make an excuse to attack us. It does not have to be a rational excuse just one they feel justifies hatred.

Im pretty sure that there will be an appology regardless of what we state here. I re-read what the Pope said and I cant for the life of me see what all the fuss is about. He was quoting an ancient text written by a Byzantine Emperor. It wasnt his words but the words of someone else.

These demostrators really, I MEAN REALLY need a life. They demostrate at the drop of the hat and it seems as though they all spend their time at the starting gate just waiting for the slightest hint of what they perceive as an insult.

What a waste of time.

No, it isn’t a waste of time. Slowly but surely, they are taking over control of governments. Lebanon just fell to them.

You may have something here. We are so busy trying to placate these folks and they know exactly what they are doing to gain influence throughout the world and at our expense.

We just need to be more vigilant and wise up to their tactics.

Thank you Gilliam for this link to the Pope’s lecture. I would like to quote the paragraph in which the quote that made the news appears.
In the seventh conversation edited by Professor Khoury, the emperor touches on the theme of the jihad (holy war). The emperor must have known that surah 2, 256 reads: “There is no compulsion in religion”. It is one of the suras of the early period, when Mohammed was still powerless and under threaten. But naturally the emperor also knew the instructions, developed later and recorded in the Qur’an, concerning holy war. Without decending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the “Book” and the “infidels”, he turns to his interlocutor somewhat brusquely with the central question on the relationship between religion and violence in general, in these words: “Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached”. The emperor goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. “God is not pleased by blood, and not acting reasonably is contrary to God’s nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats… To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death…”.

Seriously, did they just happen to have pope effigies waiting around to burn?? Most Catholics I know, myself included, don’t own portraits of the pope, but these Muslim guys in the middle of Islamic nations have them on hand ready to go???:hmmm:

We just need to be more vigilant and wise up to their tactics.
just remember tolerance. they are peaceful and loving religious folk.

what a great photo… in response to the Pope’s comments on violence in islam, they islamic folks burn an effigy of the Pope showing a leaning toward viole…wait, what’s that… i smell irony.

Irony? You mean like the fellows in the foreground stomping on the flames while wearing those (gasp) WESTERN JEANS?

I pray that the Pope reiterates his words, No apology forthcoming.

These radicals can go take a flying leap…

I voted “Don’t Know” but have no problem if the Holy Father apologizes. He’ll do it if he thinks that he should and maybe even if he doesn’t think that he should. Being able to offer a heartfelt apology is a sign of strength, not weakness.
