I endorse JoyProv31’s thoughts and aspirations. A quote from Edmund Rice Network Oceania newsletter Volume 2 No. 29
'Obama’s message in his speech could be encapsulated in the three values we proclaim as our inheritance from Edmund Rice:
.Presence
.Compassion
.Liberation
Let us have a presence for God’s goodness in the World. Have tolerance ,forgiveness and compassion on those who are condemned and vilified by us who have religious righteousness on our side.Give the liberation of hope to those trapped in the despair of abortion by offering social support and care.
God Bless. Maurice Mulliga

Regarding the children who did not attend their graduation at Notre Dame:

There are not words that express their strength of commitment. What a shame they were not a majority!

That being said: I think it is a HUGE INJUSTICE that they were faced with giving up their morals or giving up their graduation (after arduous studies and their parents after arduous financial sacrifice – check the tuitions) at a Catholic University. What an AMAZING irony; one would feel that at Notre Dame they would not have to make such a choice.

I have a high school junior whose dream school is (hopefully was) Notre Dame and who has worked so diligently in high school, taking the hardest classes and above, and making A’s. She has even mastered two foreign languages. I guess the blessing for us is that we now see how Notre Dame is before we apply and not after we’re there.
By all means apply to Notre Dame, but if she is accepted question them*** closely ***about the religious climate on campus and this “incident.”
If you get no more than the usual boilerplate, then don’t send her.

I would like to make an observation here. The Pope could NEVER interfere with the local Bishop in this matter because the local Bishop doesn’t have the authority to do anything in regard to Father Jenkins and Notre Dame. As JR has said repeatedly, Father Jenkins reports to his Provincial Superior and the Provincial Superior reports to the Pope. Also the Provincial Superior has no intention of taking any punitive action on Father Jenkins.
Well, Orders do have their own authorities, but Bishops have authority over persons, even congregations, within their dioceses, even if somewhat limited. Even the friars at EWTN and the sisters up at Hanceville have to deal with the Bishop of Birmingham. He’s not the head of their Order, but he does have something to say about certain things. I imagine there is something like this situation for Notre Dame too, though I am certainly not an expert in matters like this. Not by any stretch of the imagination. But I know the Bishops and the local Bishop have tried to reason with Fr. J. Too bad he is too stubborn and prideful to truly listen, from what I’ve been able to gather.

The World seen from Rome, zenit.org interviewed the president of the Cardinal Newman Society. This is the article. This free subscription is delivered world-wide in several languages. So this message has been heard internationally about the happenings at Notre Dame. The article describes the incident at Notre Dame as a water shed moment. Let’s see what happens next. I don’t believe this story is over by a long-shot.

Thank you for posting this article…it gives me hope and I will pray that it is, indeed, not over yet!

Oh, goodness, no, it’s not over, not by a long shot. The past few months hardly qualify as a blink of a Catholic eye. The Church tends to take the long view of things, don’t ya know. 😉 She takes her time, wants to pray and think, research and ponder, give the Holy Spirit time to move her along the right paths. 🙂

And I just found this quote too:
A Little Battle for Notre Dame
President Obama and the soul of a Catholic University.
By David Freddoso
"The Vatican was not silent either, as Archbishop Raymond Burke, ***prefect of the Catholic Church’s ***Apostolic Signatura, denounced the invitation as “a source of the gravest scandal.” [Emphasis mine.]
And I expect there will be more to be said in the future. Especially as Pres. Obama continues to push his outrageously pro-abortion agenda. I’m going to keep praying for his conversion. Lord, have mercy.

In our struggle to save the lives of the unborn we must never let anything discourage us.

We know that JESUS, through HIS Holy Church, has called us to defend life – especially the most vulnerable life – because The Church teaches that Abortion is an Intrinsic Evil.

As it concerns the US Bishops and the Pope: Let us remember that we MUST FOLLOW the Pope. If their is an apparent difference (I doubt any real difference exists) we MUST FOLLOW the Pope.

Let us not be modern-day Luthers.

Spot on we all know the truth :extrahappy:

What is the pope’s stand on Notre Dame ? If I have missed it please enlighten me.

Well, that’s the point.

At the beginning of this thread concern was shown for his ‘silence’ (word used in the initial entry, not mine.)

I wonder…If the Pope and President Obama hit it off too well, does that mean that Benedict XVI will also draw anti-abortion protesters if HE accepts an invitation to speak at Notre Dame?

I suppose he would if Obama convinces him that abortion is NOT an intrinsic evil and he, too, puts the sacred right of a woman to her privacy over the life of an unborn.

That will not happen. Pope Benedict XVI is far too PRO LIFE to ever draw protests from the PRO LIFE crowd on abortion issues or on contraception issues. He is totally in keeping with Christ’s instructions and will.

It is not that the Pope is too pro-life to change his mind, although he probably is too pro-life to change his mind. But that is not the point. The point is that Christ and Christianity and the Church are pro-life and no pope can change that, not ever. It isn’t a matter of his opinion or his 'druthers. If Christ had been pro-choice, then the Church would be pro-choice. But He wasn’t and He isn’t. (I’m sure that it would be mentioned somewhere in scripture or tradition if He were.) Christ is the way and the truth and the LIFE. I don’t think you can get much more pro-life than that.

even before Christ, the “church” (Jewish) was against murder. thou shalt not kill has not gone out of style… God does not change…

Do you know wht the poster meant by saying that the pope & BHO … might have gotten along too well… (or whatever poster said)???

i don’t watch TV…

I think the Pope is supposed to receive BHO on the latter’s visit to Rome sometime this month.

Either that or the poster was talking about a hypothetical meeting between them around the time of the Notre Shame fiasco.

As for the Jewish religion, I’m saddened by the realization that many a rabbi does not feel that Judaism is pro-life, even though they still honor the commandment prohibiting murder. I’ve read too many comments by rabbi’s criticizing the Church for her pro-life stance against abortion to kid myself that there is a pro-life concensus there.
