The Problem With Liberation Ordination
A few weeks ago, a group called Roman Catholic Womenpriests staged what it called an ordination, vesting three Boston-area women in white chasubles and red stoles. It told the local papers that the ordinations were valid, despite the Catholic Church’s teaching to the contrary; it even asserted episcopal approval from a rogue bishop whose name it won’t reveal. But, as a statement from the Archdiocese of Boston put it: “Catholics who attempt to confer a sacred order on a woman, and the women who attempt to receive a sacred order, are by their own actions separating themselves from the Church.” In other words: The ordinations were not Catholic.
Don’t tell that to Judy Lee, one of the “priests.” She insists that the archdiocese’s pronouncement will be a dead letter: “We are Roman Catholics. . . . The all-male hierarchy and their legal traditions came along with the spiritual package that we embrace. We do not have to embrace both if they are contradictory.” Bridget Meehan, spokeswoman for Roman Catholic Womenpriests, which claims 61 priests in North America, including one bishop, insists: “Nothing or no one can stop the action of God’s Spirit moving in the Church. . . . We are not discouraged by excommunication. In fact, in many ways, it is a catalyst for growth.” Ms. Meehan, who was ordained in 2006, believes that a “more transparent, community model” can bring nonpracticing Catholics back into the fold.
Wow! An artitcle in the mainstream press that gets it right. Of course it it the WSJ.

If women want to be priests, why can’t they just go to the Episcopalians?

To the question, “why can’t they just go to the Episcopalians?”, the answer is “What?? And miss taking on Rome???” That would be too simple. Their agenda is less about becoming priests than it is about proving there’s something inherently wrong with a male heirarchy. Of course, that’s just my opinion. As a female who believes that the Roman male heirarchy has nothing whatsoever to do with any lack of equality between the sexes, I’d like to tell them to grow up and get over it.

👍 I am with you there!

Doesn’t it strike you all as odd that they insist they’re being called by God to do something they can’t possibly achieve?

I think they are honestly under the mistaken impression that the priesthood is a “job” that anyone with the right education and skills should be allowed to do.

Now, there are aspects of the priesthood - management stuff - that anybody with the right skill set can do (and that some priests are really bad at) - but the essence of the priesthood is that they are “in persona Christi” with regard to the Sacraments - that is, they stand in the person of Jesus, when they are celebrating the Sacraments.

The question then becomes, were this a re-enactment, would you hire a male actor, or a female actor, to take on the role of Jesus? Male, obviously - unless it were a farce or a comedy. The Sacraments are much more than a re-enactment, of course! But it is because of that aspect of them that the priest has to be male, and that’s the sticking point - nobody in the Catholic Church is going to budge on that one.

Ah, yes. The evil one is an amazing emulator. He can do everything - right up to the point of producing good fruit.

“ordination” (in quotes) would be subjective. These women are being ordained, just not as RC priests. Is it any different from the ordination of any Protestant minister? (And they are, after all, ‘in protest.’)

Point well taken. I would like to see how the LA Times or San Jose Mercury called it. I may just Google them up.

I am waiting for one of “them” to sue the Church for sexual discrimination.

Pray for these misguided souls and those that they are leading astray.

I keep seeing that phrase “called to serve the Church” in articles about these gals. Maybe someone knows the answer to this - when a Catholic priest is ordained, is the call to ‘serve the Church’ or to 'serve God.?" Is the difference significant?

They have clearly listened to their circle of associates, as well as the secular world. If someone has an explanation for this other than the influence of the evil one, I would certainly love to hear it.

Has anyone visited their website? Just put Womenpriests in your search engine. (I have no idea how to post a link…) There’s at least one woman in my area working in healthcare who claims to be a Roman Catholic priest, so she may have been from this group.

Free up some PM space and I will send you the instructions. Your CAF mailbox is full!!!

po18guy, don’t laugh, but the only way I’ve ever gotten into my PM is when I use the link on the PM notification email. I don’t know how. (That’s ok, I’ll figure it out later…)
