Well, my goodness, that’s something new to me.

However, looking over his answers to the questions, they seem in line with correct teaching. I liked how he would reply straightforward and seriously to the questions that were framed in an almost disrespectful way. You can reach a lot of people that way.

The red flag for me here is that I’ve seen this sort of behavior in priest before. Young priest trying to be hip with young people, by taking on the style and culture of anti-establishment. Hippie priest, heavy metal priest, biker priest, I have seen them and all have gone done in failure, usually bringing scandal to the Church in the process.

I think young people actually look to see holiness in a priest, not adolescent behavior. Eventually young people grow up and turn away from such behavior.

The bottom line is, a priest needs to behave as an adult.

Well, like I said, you would have a problem with St. Philip Neri. He was not above in shaving only half his beard to make fun of himself; as he said, he is a fool for Christ.

The desire to be a fool for Christ or hip and highly thought of by young people, are two opposites. One is of humble submission, the other self-glorification.

I’m not saying this priest is into self-glorification, but its obvious that he wants to connect with young people by being something admirable.

I don’t think this priest is out to glorify himself. There’s no indication he’s doing it for himself, but it is rather the opinion of those not used to his style.

At first glance I felt that there seemed to be a bit of a disregard for the dignity of the priesthood. On second thought I considered St. Philip de Neri who would have scandalized most with his “unorthodox” appearance. After perusing his site I don’t see any problem doctrinally - it looks sounds orthodox. I remember a saying that I learned in elementary school, “don’t judge a book by its cover.”

I agree with the poster who presented Father Stan Fortuna and his rap music. That priest is simply awesome!! I’ve seen him on EWTN many times, and I’ve bought some of his music.

Today we have a lack of interesting Catholic music which can be enjoyed outside the Mass. Kids (and adults, too) need something to listen to which has Catholic values.

Priests like Father Stan provide us with just that. I didn’t check the Punk Priest’s website enough to know if he makes his own music or not. But we do need more Catholic contemporary musicians. Not everyone enjoys classical music or laid-back Christian music. Some people enjoy rap or punk or other rock ‘n’ roll, and if there’s nothing Catholic in those genres for them to listen to, they’re going to listen to secular music in those genres.

If the Punk Priest hadn’t put any musical references on his website at all, would his opponents feel differently about him? I think so.

Let’s not judge someone by their music.

Peace,

A person would have to be a pretty good actor to fake a personality that is not one’s own. I read his bio and found that his interests are who he really is, not a pretense adopted in order to lure youth.

Maybe a good question to ask is, what does “holiness” look like? A monk with a hairshirt, donned with a rosary and a crucifix around his neck, who never looks anyone in the eye, but keeps his focus on the ground in silent contemplation? Would this speak to our youth today? I think he may be like St. Paul who said he wished to be all things to all men so that he might gain them ALL.

discussed several times here, old news, to me the music is simply a matter of personal preference, so I will exercise my freedom to chose and turn my speakers off. the discussion belongs on popular media, not on this forum.

Thinking about what holiness looks like…

How about St. Simon Stylites who lived for 37 years atop a pillar? Surely he would be posted on every internet website as an appalling example of what “crazy” looks like, had he lived today. We simply cannot judge God’s incredible ways.

The stone rejected by the builders of today, may just be God’s cornerstone. 😛

Before I say anything less that complimentary about one of God’s Holy Ordained, I’ll make sure I have facts. Yes, you are free to form an opinion.
I, also am free to form an opinion. First, the Bishop should tighten up on the priests leash. Secondly, if that doesn’t work, the so-called priest should quit, and find another line of work, or start his own church, as lots of others have done. He is a disgrace to the priesthood, and to the church.

And if they call the Master of the house “Beelzebub,” how much more those of His household? Mt. 25:10

Why, because he does not act like you think he should act?

Because he doesn’t do it “the way we’ve always done it”?

Any faithful priest who is deeply in love with his vocation and is an effective minister is not a disgrace to the priesthood - he is a hero.

Many of those people, he said, have been excellent influences, especially Father Robert T. Lubic, parochial vicar.
“There is really no one thing he’s said. It’s just the way he lives, the way he talks to people. Father Bob completely gives himself over to service. He got me involved in most things that I’ve helped with or actually organized.”
Steiner, has been an altar server, cross bearer and lector. He is a member of the parish senior-high youth ministry core team and participates in Vacation Bible School. Within the diocese, he has shared his talents with the Diocesan Youth Ministry Council and received the Eagle of the Cross Award in June 2002. He traveled with young adults and adult chaperones from the diocese and attended the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Ind. He has given more than nine-days of service to the missions in Appalachia.
… people will realize there is something different about you if you’re living Christ’s love. That’s when they’re ready. That’s when you can talk about the faith. If you try to force your faith on someone they turn away very quickly,” he added.
Some may persist with skepticism, but I think this points to a really dedicated pastor who is influencing others to follow Christ in deep self-giving.

Very well said!

You’ve got your opinion, I’ve got mine. That’s what this forum is all about.

I am curious as to what he has said on his Site that leads you to believe he is a disgrace? Everything I read was a very concise, correct explanation of catholic Doctirne.
