Father is not of any of the Eastern Churches (altho it is possible that he may have been granted bi-ritual faculties at some point). He is a Latin priest and pastors Holy Family parish in Latrobe PA.
Not for long, Joe. As of July 5th, he will be my pastor! Awesome! The changes were announced last Sunday and will probably appear in the Accent (diocesan newspaper) which comes out today. I am looking forward to his ministry among us. I believe this will be his first assignment as Pastor.

Lucky!

I think he’s alright. I checked out his website and blog, and I don’t see anything wrong…Yeah, he’s a little…different, but different can be a good thing…variety is the spice of life after all. I don’t see anything wrong as far as his actual priestly things go. Like he’s not abusing the liturgy or anything, and I hear from a lot of people, that he is a good, holy priest, and that’s what matters.

You may find this surprising coming from me being strictly attached to the Traditional Latin Mass, but it seems that the heart of this priest at least is in the right place. (And, besides, his music has got a good beat.😃 )

And if anyone here thinks his website or he is disrespectful, all’s I can say is that you’ll probably see a lot worse in your lifetimes.
Here are a few interesting photos of this priest

Bob, I don’t think he would like you. From his blog:

I am more than happy to enter into conversation with any well-intentioned individual who is truly open to dialogue. Obviously - by definition - that excludes all so-called “tradionalists” who think Catholic theology ended with the Council of Trent.

Some people have inquired as to what I have against “Traditional Catholics.” The answer is really quite simple; I am horribly taken aback by their lack of charity. (That is a very charitable way of putting it … utter hatred is often a more accurate description.) If it were simply a matter of wanting to be able to have the Tridentine Mass I would have no problem with them. I would even support the establishment of a new Rite within the Church for those who are attached to the pre-Vatican II Liturgy. But alas these “Traditional Catholics” want to roll back the clock to the 1500s for all of us. And they viciously attack everything and everyone associated with the post-Vatican II Church.

Some more gems:
For my Easter homily I used AC/DC’s Highway to Hell again (as I had two years ago at St. Barbara’s

Ash Wednesday , The Year of Our Lord 2007
Ash Wednesday has always been one of my least favourite days liturgically. The Church is packed with people wanting filth smeared on their foreheads, but many of the people aren’t there any other time. My homily at the 12:10 Mass was short and to the point (but not all that sweet!):

He thinks Wall Mart is evil.

I have been accustomed to pronouncing Walmart as ‘evil’ for their personnel policies that are designed to prevent their employess from receiving benefits (such as health insurance) but that never stopped me from shopping at Walmart. I always used the excuse that it was convenient, cheapest, open at odd hours. But is that really important? How can I protest verbally against a company’s inhumumane policies while at the same time supporting them financially? If I want to be honest I CAN’T. So from this moment forward I am determined not to darken the doors of Walmart.

The man is not only a Priest… He’s a wise old sage!

actually with that statement let me make some introductions…

“Mr. nail, meet mr. hammer… mr. hammer… meet mr. nail.”

Right on Father… i hope you post that in the traditional forum too…stmaria… it’s right on target! maybe it’ll get some traditionalists thinking… or maybe not.

thanks for posting his message… it was a refreshing read. a long, cool drink of cold water from a Priest who obviously is very very wise beyond his years.

and i’m surprised you post things from a blatantly anti-Catholic website. they smear Pope John Paul the Second all over the place on that site. maybe Jack Chick has some thoughts on this Priest you could share as well. 😛
Once you start smearing the good name of the greatest Pope in our lifetimes… you’ve gone too far. and TIA is just another sour grapes website that needs a pacifier because they don’t get their traditionalist ways.

Chrismyster,

And Mother Teresa is also a target, one of the holiest people in our day who established countless convents of her order to serve the poorest of the poor. (Like nobody knew this?)

The fruit is so obvious as to the charity of God being spread all over this globe through her ministry. But then, TIA doesn’t like good fruit, and loses no opportunity, as apparently does stmaria, of slandering another’s good name.

Are we supposed to be horrified? He supports those who want the TLM. Is it because he doesn’t agree with disregarding the Pauline Mass and he believes the current rite to valid? I read on his website he doesn’t generally answer the rantings of schismatic catholics sedevacantist, SSPXers etc.

AC/DC at Mass? Well I guess I would have to hear the context before making a judgement. I would guess he used the lyrics from the song Highway to Hell to make a point, the song does basically decribe someone who is on the road to hell.

He has also sung these songs at Mass according to his site-
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
What Wondrous Love Is This
Hail Mary: Gentle Woman
Prayer of Saint Francis
…as well as other Catholic hymms.

While the wording about Ash Wednesday does seem harsh it is actually true that Ash Wednesday is one of the most heavily attended Masses while it isn’t even a holy day of obligation. I know people who recieve ashes on Ash Wednesday and then don’t go to church the rest of the year. I think that was his point.

As far as Wal-Mart he is free to shop where ever he pleases, I don’t think the church dictates that a priest must like Wal-Mart.

Are you from a schismatic Catholic church? If that’s the case I could see where you would think this site was liberal. Schismatics aren’t in any better position than happy clappy liturgical dancing parishes (which doesn’t seem to be going on in this priest’s parish by the way)-in fact they’re worse, they have broken with Rome.

Several quotes throughout here, in the media, in our daily conversations want to label someone either conservative or liberal. When it relates to faith, I prefer to use that someone is orthodox in their faith or not. Orthodox simply meaning that they strictly follow the Catholic church’s teachngs.

I would label this priest orthodox and I applaud him.

Priest, yes, but punk? Green Day? The Cure? Smashing Pumpkins? ABBA? Def Leppard?!

NOT PUNK.

I wanted to be all happy and supportive and maybe even admit to being tempted to check out one of his masses, but after looking over his music collection I just want to run. His attempt at singing ‘Here I Am, Lord’ isn’t helping either (though I will give it credit for hilarity).

Stick to plainchant, guys. You had a great thing going with that.
Mirdath, if I ever find a gothic priest will you come to mass with me?

I have to commend most of the posters to this thread. 👍

For a change, it is utterly a joy to read that there is no prejudice based on photos and hearsay, but a rational evaluation based on Father’s presentation of catholic truth. Had this been placed in the TC forum, I expect the results would be radically different. I can’t tell you how good it is to have read your responses, and to know that they are favorable in the majority.

God bless you all.

Well, I would consider myself a traditional Catholic and spend most of my time on these forums in the TC forum. I searched his website. While I would not seek out his church and would probably avoid it if possible, I have to agree with other traditionalists who have responded that he seems orthodox in his beliefs. I imagine that I would probably like the guy and I respect his priesthood. But I am attached to the TLM so again, I would avoid his services.I think that’s fine though as I’m pretty sure there are people who would avoid the Mass I attend as well. I am a little disheartened by his refusal to even speak to traditionalists as that seems to be lumping all in one boat. That said anyone can be rude regardless of how they worship. Perhaps we could each do our part in recognizing the good that each person has to offer instead of using each other as a punching bag. Also, I think if we truly believe that our priests are called, then I think that we should start by giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are truly and lovingly spreading the Word of God as best they can. We should maybe support them a little more and criticize a little less.

Maria, it gets a little disheartening to read posts like this where the whipping boy comes out to demean our priests, liturgies, and anyone who attends them.
http://bestsmileys.com/whipping/1.gif

FYI, I just spoke with a friend yesterday about the old Mass. As a former altar server, he observed the priest coming in plastered every morning and garbling the prayers in a 12-minute record. Now to keep one’s head in the sand that all TLM priests are 100% holy and orthodox as compared to those who pray the new liturgy is a fallacy - don’t even go there! Did you know that a number of years PRIOR TO Vatican II, a Guest House opened in Michigan for alcoholic priests? the ones who prayed the TLM?
And today there are still alcoholic priests and homosexual priests.

While I will aagree that Tradition in Action goes too far, I also would not ignore their site. The photos are real and they need to be shown. Just as you and I are passionate about our beliefs so are they.

They don’t only go to far, but are in schism and most likely should be considered an enemy of the Church.:knight2:

This is the site review from Catholic Culture
DESCRIPTION
Tradition in Action
claims to be “committed to defend the perennial Magisterium of Holy Mother Church and Catholic traditions. TIA also works for a restoration of Christian civilization, adapted to contemporary historical circumstances.”
However, TIA’s members attempt to do this by ridiculing the Roman clergy, the Pope, and many prominent Catholic leaders and religious. Their manner of presenting pictures and commentary completely aside from any context is both a misrepresentation of facts and disgraceful to the Church and Her hierarchy. While ostensibly seeking to reinstate traditions in the Church, this site ridicules the living Tradition of the Church’s Magisterium and therefore, it cannot validly claim a right to defense of Holy Mother Church. **We recommend avoiding this site altogether. **

Mother Teresa was certainly unorthodox and professed a number of material heresies, that much is documented by her own words. Whether she was in fact a formal heretic would require some investigation. I’m sure someone has done or will do this research. After reading her correspondence with Rama P. Coormaraswamy, I think she was probably just mistaken and did not really know that her ideas were unorthodox. That being said, I wouldn’t let her or someone like her teach my children their catechism.
