I agree

if I were a marxist or islamic fundamentalist, and wanted an illustration of everything wrong with American culture, this is the program I would use to make my point.

My dd and sil have a “simpsons room” at their house loaded with ephemera and artifacts, obtained on ebay. since the new baby came and the fear for the survival of these valuables when he starts crawling, they have decided to auctiona everything on ebay. to my surprise the amount they anticipate is enough to start a college fund that will grow enough to put him and all his cousins through college in 20 yrs. My questions: is it moral for them to profit from this?

I think they did the right thing to get rid of it. God turns bad circumstances into good I will leave this judgement up to the Lord.

One of the best around - excellent satire on American life and beliefs, along the lines of the ultimate standard, All in the Family.

It is not funny and is overated from the satirical point of view. That is my subjective opinion. My other opinion is that Christians know that there are some episodes that are dodgy but don’t want to give it up because they find it funny and enjoy it.

Re: Your signature. What a silly comment. The Church is where the Real presence of Christ resides. It is wholly beneficial to got to The House of God

John,
You seem to be very opinionated and judgemental.

You seem to think that those who disagree with your opinion are fooling themselves.

Sorry but you are wrong here and I do watch the Simpsons and find them funny and your opinion is wrong as to why you think I do not want to give it up.

You miss the point here. Just going to a Church does nothing for you if you do not open yourself up for it.

I never have time to watch, but I think The Simpsons is funny and harmless compared to most programs. It has its moments, for me anyways. One of my friends bears an uncanny resemblance to “Dr. Nick.”

Evil - no.

Stupid - yes

Just another example of the dumbing down of America.

I agree with you about the excellent satire on American life and beliefs (I have not seen All in the Family, from what I recall). I find it to be for the most part a very funny show.

I suppose, if anything, I wouldn’t reccommend this for small children, as some episodes tend to have some adult-oriented material, plus you have to be alive long enough and have some education to get some of the more ‘subtle’ (for lack of better word) humor. I’d say when they are 13 - 14 they should be old enough to watch. At least I think that’s around when I started watching/my parents let us watch it.

So simply going to Church makes one a Christian? Even if they are just “Easter and Christimas Christians”? Even if they don’t bother living a “Christian lifestyle”? Going to church alone makes everything “all better”? Interesting concept.

Absolutely not, What makes one a christian is when one takes on Christs nature and walks in His Love daily. One that dies to sin daily and becomes His hands ,his eyes, his ears, and his heart. There are those who claim to be christian but the truth is that they are not. Many are called but few are chosen.

I admit, there are a couple of time while watching the Simpson that I have to cringe a little bit because they do or say something inappropriate, but I usually enjoy the show. I don’t find it anymore evil than most things on TV. Maybe we should all shut off the cable and satellites?

A new book examines the diverse religious threads–Christian, Jewish and Hindu–that permeate the long-running TV show.

The program, to me, often has a moral undercurrent. Loads of episodes result in Bart or Homer learning a lesson in humility or ‘making the right choice’, generally prompted by Lisa.

It’s one of these programs that works on several levels.

The rich, but ultimately unhappy money grabbing Montgomery Burns for example. But there are episodes where a redemming side creeps out…

OK…I think the Simpson’s can be funny, but I never really got into it and rarely to I watch it faithfully. First and foremost, it is satire, so I take it with a grain of salt. Sure, they pick on some Christians with the character of Ned Flanders, but there’s nothing really sacrilidgeous (sp?) about it.

One thing to note about the show and the Characters…faith is actually talked about in the show and church going is something that is actually depicted. Other shows don’t do that from what I have seen. When I was a kid, “The Cosby Show” and 'Family Ties" were two shows that were my favorites. I don’t ever remember the Huxtables or the Keatons ever going to church though…addly enough, the Simpsons have on many occasions.

I remember this one scene on The Simpsons were the family was on death row for something. A priest came in to pray with them, and Marge says “Thank you Father, but you must know, we aren’t Catholic.” The priest smiles and in his Irish accent says, “ay, well enjoy your stay in hell.” You can make your own judgement from this…I laughed a little
