I enjoy the Simpsons. I do think it more adult oriented though.

Talk about coincidence.

Just last Sunday, the visiting priest who gave the homily at my parish talked about evil influences in mainstream television and he mentioned The Simpsons as an example.

I disagree with him. I’ve seen more evil things in some parts of the world, and it has nothing to do with TV. I find the show funny. Those who don’t can change the channel.
That Priest is right. Respect your priests and give up the Simpsons.🙂

I look at the poll and 55 per cent of you think the Simpsons are ok, nay, great to watch :banghead:

I see nothing wrong w/ The Simpson’s, which is most certainly an adult cartoon. If you don’t want your children to watch it, then don’t let them. If yo think they’re mature enough to watch it, then let them. It is a great satire about American life, beliefs, and the American family. Just because it might not fit your personal mold doesn’t make it bad or evil.

The Simpsons is a very clever satire of American social and political culture, perhaps not appropriate for all children or even adults.
I have seen lots of different values good and not so good parodized in the show, but rarely glorified like most TV shows.
The Simpsons does a great job at making fun of American culture without endorsing it.
I love satire.
I definitely agree. I think it is a great satire of American Culture. It’s sad though, but one of the most widely exported television program from the US happens to be The Jerry Springer Show. Personally, I am more sad that this is what people around the world think we are like.

Simps rule!

“You’ll never stop The Simpsons! Have no fears, we’ve got stories for years!”

I love the Simpsons. They’re hilarious. It’s satire, and heaven knows we all need to learn to laugh at ourselves from time to time.

And look at Marge! She’s the best wife in the world. Look at all she has to put up with being married to Homer, and yet she’s still faithful to him and still loves him. That’s a great example of committment!

And I love Bart’s prank phone calls to Moe’s. Once he called and Moe turned around and announced to the bar that he was looking for “Amanda Huginkiss” “Amanda Huginkiss! Amanda Huginkiss! Why can’t I find Amanda Huginkiss?” and Barney replies, “Maybe your standards are too high.”

I love Ned Flanders. I love Fat Tony. Nelson, Sideshow Bob, Milhouse, Troy McClure…these are all classic characters.

“Mmmmm…Doughnuts.”

I have read all the posts so far, here are my thoughts:

There are not too many ‘animated series programing for the above 18 year old crowd’.
Just became the program is drawn do not mean it is for children under the age to understand the underlying themes in the Simpsons.

Humor is a release from everyday troubles and concerns. The Simpsons is a program that makes fun of ‘everyday life’ in an exaggerated way. SInce the program is drawn, the exaggerations are overemphised because there are some things you can’t do with real actors. (Unless the program had real actors but computer enhanced). In short, the Simpsons are an exaggerated express of everyday American surburbian life in the 1990’s to the present day.

As for Catholic and/or Chrisitan viewers…
Ned Flanders and his family is a Christian family who struggles in their witnessing, yet they do make an impact on the Simpsons.
Once again even The Flanders are exaggerated, they ‘overly Christian’ if there is such a thing. Like someone said eariler, the Simpsons DO go to church, Homer may be sleeping but he DID get his foot in the door.

I see nothing wrong with the Simpsons once you understand the humor, satire and lampooning that takes place. Once you fail or do not see that, then it is a program you may not want to view.

On a side note, a program that I see that is even FUNNIER is Futurama. (Also artistically and written with the helpof Matt Groeing. Futurama is more of a satire/lampooning about our current society in general and the humor of the world in the year 3000. I like Futurama even more.

Edwin since you like Futurama, how do you like Family Guy? It is my personal favorite.

Baby Stewie Rules!!!🙂

I like the satire of the Simpsons and how nearly always there is a happy ending with a lesson. Funny stuff, too. However, there are some episodes that offend me. But that’s satire.

John of Woking:
Is it good or evil? Your choice

I would like to combine the last two possibilities, but I don’t think that Christians “should” watch it - it’s hard to see how one can have a duty to do so. 🙂

I like it, a lot ##

Think how many souls we will lead to Heaven by giving up the Simpsons

😃

Especially since y’all love it so much

So, IOW, if you watch The Simpsons, you’ll go to Hell. Here’s another emoticon:

I didn’t say that I just implied that the sacrifice you all make from giving up watching the show will speed along many poor souls in purgatory and may even be good for your soul. 😃 🙂 👍

It’s sort of funny, in the titbits of it I’ve seen. But it is at the same time so inane that I don’t waste my time watching it.

I think it’s funny.

I also think it’s a great teaching tool for my oldest kid, who is 10. Yes, there’s bad behaviour in the show, but the bad behaviour has consequences. It’s also one of the few shows on TV that talks about religion.

Yes, it makes fun of religion. That’s fine with me. People have made religion – like everything else in life – so ridiculous that your choices are (1) laugh or (2) cry.

We laugh.
