Absolutely not, What makes one a christian is when one takes on Christs nature and walks in His Love daily. One that dies to sin daily and becomes His hands ,his eyes, his ears, and his heart. There are those who claim to be christian but the truth is that they are not. Many are called but few are chosen.
That is the point of my post. I was just commenting on John of Woking’s post about Pat’s signature,

So simply going to Church makes one a Christian? Even if they are just “Easter and Christimas Christians”? Even if they don’t bother living a “Christian lifestyle”? Going to church alone makes everything “all better”? Interesting concept.
OK, hold on a second…no one is saying that simply going to church “makes everything better.” I don’t think anyone believes that here. A “christian” is one who believes that Jesus was the Christ. A Catholic is one who believes in the authority of the Catholic Church. I think you need to relax a little.

The program, to me, often has a moral undercurrent. Loads of episodes result in Bart or Homer learning a lesson in humility or ‘making the right choice’, generally prompted by Lisa.

It’s one of these programs that works on several levels.
While thats true it’s a very bad influence on kids. They don’t pick up on the undercurrents, they just see these kids being rude & disobedient, mocking adults/teachers etc. and this behaviour is ‘cool’ & funny. My mother minds a little lad (he’s 8 now) & you could actually see him becoming more & more obnoxious from watching ‘The Simpsons’. So my mother banned it. Another thing that bugs me it the way so many ‘heros’ in kids movies are rude, obnoxious little brats & then people wonder why kids act up.

I think that if a child can’t handle the content in the show, then they shouldn’t watch it. Good call.

John thats putting it mildly. Its amazing the trash we allow into our children and our minds. It is poison to the soul.
Not to belabor too obvious a point, but The Simpsons is not a children’s show.

Hmmm…let me see

Simpsons…MARRIED
they present a traditional family between a man and a woman.

Out of all the channels I think FOX has contributed to the staus of traditional marriage…and while the might focus on the disfunctional marred family, its still better than a show about a single parent…

and Simpsons usually has a moral point…preseveration, hard work, team work, family…sometimes its hard to miss sometimes its easy to miss…but just to let you know that episode with Sideshow Bob and this brother Thesil was also an adventures in Oddesy (focus on the family production)episode…

I have watched Simpsons since I was four or five…(my mom didn;t like it but it was always on anyway)

I don’t have a TV and i didn;t watch the season premeire…and I can;t say if when I get older I will watch

The problem here is that some people think that just because it’s animated it’s a children’s show. The Simpsons is not for kids.

I however have found it funny on many occasions. I think there is a culture gap in appreciating the show though. I had a boss once who was a big fan of the show and we’d always be cutting up about some funny scene. We had a fellow employee who was from Laos and he just could not see the humor. He only saw the action on the surface.

Someone compared it to All in the Family earlier. I think that’s a good point. Some people look at that show and say it’s racist and offensive, and others look at it and see that it’s actually making fun of racism and ignorance.

I think The Simpsons falls into the same category. It’s not funny because bad behavior itself is funny. It’s funny because bad behavior is commonplace and familiar. I see it as mocking bad behavior rather than celebrating it. Humor is often based on behavior inappropriate to one’s environment. That’s the basis of the show. You always know that Homer or Bart are going to do something completely inappropriate (whether at work, at church, at school, etc.) but often you don’t see it coming.

For instance, having endured a long bout of jury duty, I thought it was hilarious when Homer was on jury duty…sleeping…but wearing glasses painted to make it look like his eyes were open. Then when the glasses were taken away from him…he actually had a backup pair. 😛 Homer raises bad behavior to a level of absurdity. He’s an artist. 😃

Please see my post above this one you wrote.

The Simpsons is funny but very cutting. Absolutely not to be viewed by children and this is a real problem. They put on re-runs at 5:00 pm and my kids want to watch it. I put the kabosh on that real fast. It is completely inappropriate for children.

I didn’t find an answer that reflected my opinion in your poll, John of Woking. So, here is my opinion.

The Simpsons is a very clever satire of American social and political culture, perhaps not appropriate for all children or even adults.
I have seen lots of different values good and not so good parodized in the show, but rarely glorified like most TV shows.
The Simpsons does a great job at making fun of American culture without endorsing it.
I love satire.

Talk about coincidence.

Just last Sunday, the visiting priest who gave the homily at my parish talked about evil influences in mainstream television and he mentioned The Simpsons as an example.

I disagree with him. I’ve seen more evil things in some parts of the world, and it has nothing to do with TV. I find the show funny. Those who don’t can change the channel.

I find the show funny, too. My children have been exposed to the program. I am sure many would think I am a horrible mother but I know that they would eventually see it. I would rather watch it with them so they can see my reaction to the more shady stuff going on.

It is funny how we can actually learn a moral lesson from these cartoons. As a mother i have found that they are a good tool in showing my children what is right or wrong in our society. We can’t hide and protect our children from everything. I think it is better that they have the tools to distinguish this for themselves.

If I had made a big deal about the show and forbidding them from viewing it that would have only made it that more attractive and tempting to watch behind my back. This way i can discuss with them what is going on and their feelings about it. In the end to them it is just a cartoon. They have not turned out like Bart. If anything they have learned that they don’t want to be like Bart or Homer.

You are right about the “evils” that are in the world. I have not seen anything that scares me more then the real stuff that is going on out there. Most of the things we see on tv are a direct result of what is going on in the “real world”. That is where the TV writers get their ideas from, anyway.

John,
You seem to be very opinionated and judgemental.

You seem to think that those who disagree with your opinion are fooling themselves.

Sorry but you are wrong here and I do watch the Simpsons and find them funny and your opinion is wrong as to why you think I do not want to give it up.

You miss the point here. Just going to a Church does nothing for you if you do not open yourself up for it.
I Judge situations/choices.I try not to judge people - that is God’s job. I do believe that many people do rationalise away evil choices. If that is opinionated…so be it.

Ahem, if you sit in front of the Blessed Sacrament it is beneficial. I presume just going to a Holy Hour is proof that you are open to it. I think gone are the days where people just ‘turn up for Mass’ out of obligation…at least where I come from.

“But Marge, how can I make a difference. I’m only (counts on fingers) one man.”

“Stupid TV, be more funny.”

“You couldn’t fool me on the foolingest day of your life with an electrified fooling machine.”

Some of Homer’s perspective on the topic.🙂

You should like this one John.–

“English. Who needs that? I’m never going to England.” 🙂

“What are you going to do, release the dogs…or the bees…or the dogs with bees in thier mouth and when they bark they shoot bees at you…do your worst!” --Homer, to Mr Burns

“Crying won’t bring your dog back…unless you tears smell like dog food. So you can just sit here eating can after can of dog food until your tears smell enough like dog food to bring your dog back, or you can go find your dog!”
–Homer, to Bart when Santa’s Little Helper ran away.

Genius…I think so 🙂

:o I always give my husband “the look” when he recites his now favorite Homer line:

“…how am I gonna die? an avalache of naked women?”
