I think it’s hilarous true it takes some jabs at Christianity but I try to not be offened by it it’s certainly not as bad as other shows like say South Park or Beavis and Butthead.

I don’t really like The Simpsons, but that’s just my opinion. I don’t think it’s a good show, but I’m not sure if I’d call it “evil.” Again, it’s just my opinion. 😉

The Simpsons look like saints compared to South Park! 😃

I love the Simpsons! And Family Guy. And Futurama. And King of the Hill.:D*:rotfl: *

I am also probably one of hte only ones here who allows my children to watch all of these shows. Yes, some of the content is a bit risque, but it does open up wonderful doors of communication about otherwise sensitive subjects.😉

I actually started watching the Simpsons from the start 14(?) years ago when my first was just a baby. He and his siblings have grown up with the show!🙂 And, I might add, they are the most kind, sensitive, polite, smart young men I know! (all with great senses of humor!) 👍

I’m glad you mentioned the Family Guy. That show, on the other hand has crossed some lines. There’s one particular scene in one of the shows in which the character goes to communion in a Catholic Church, drinks from the chalice and exclaims something to the effect of “If this is Jesus’ blood, he must’ve been drunk 24/7” and he promptly drinks it down and passes out.

Mocking me?: Haha, no biggie.

Mocking Jesus or the doctrines of my faith?: Shame on you, I’ll take issue with that.

If you believe in ‘faith alone’ & ‘once saved allways saved’ then why not watch it now? You’re allready forgiven and have ‘saved’ yourself so watch the Simpsons all you want.

Myself, I love the show. I’ll just go to confession or burn a little hotter in Gods love (i.e. Purgatory  ). As you can see, I have a Biblically correct ‘HOPE’ for salvation and will let Jesus judge me.😉

I don’t let my kids watch it much as the show is for adults.

Yeah, except for the fact that Lisa is the only “good” one and she still watches violent cartoons, complains about republicans, rolls her eyes at religion and church, and goes on and on about “feminism”. Just another example of the liberals trying to make themselves look good. While Ned Flanders is painted as a religious wacko who by the way commits fornication and doesn’t repent. They ceaselessly make fun of Christians and Christianity, use curse words casually, and make Homer out to be some kind of dufus hero.

Yeah I watch it sometimes. It’s fun to laugh at, but when it gets to bad, I turn it off.
A point well made

To quote Barbara Nicolosi:
Eminem and Britney and Howard Stern and Susan Sarandon are not the enemy. They are the mission field. We have to stop cursing the people who are poisoning the culture and instead start praying and working for their conversion. The goal is not to replace these people with us. The goal is to turn them into us.

Don’t forget that Lisa became a Buddist!

I cuss their work. I do not cuss them. I pray for them. I cuss the Simpsons as an unedifying piece of work.

Some religious satire in the Simpson’s is right on the money. I wish I could better remember, but there is that scene where the Rev. Lovejoy is talking about important stuff up at the pulpit, you know, he came down from the heaven, was dead for a bit, and rose up and went back where he came from,…you all know who we are talking about…ET.

I nearly died laughing. How true a picture of some preachers. Lots of the show is good satire. I haven’t seen any recent episodes, though. I only ever see it in an occasional rerun, and even then not during prime time.

The problem I have with the Simpsons and others like it is even though it does a good job at showing all the various ills and contradictions in our society, it really has no moral compass by which to assess or correct anything. So while it is spot-on in many respects, there’s no real comprehensive world view to set anyone straight. By what standard does Groening decide that these people are sick, misguided, stupid or lame?

Plus, there is a fine line between critique and exploitation that entertainment crosses all the time, so that something that could be moral uplifting will turn suddenly crass and debasing because they lack that consistent world view (that we get from the Church). It’s amoral and can hurt more than help the situation over time. That is why someone like Flannery O’Connor is so great; she showed all the idiocy and sin in our world but knew the solution also–get thee all back to the Church! But she doesn’t have to hit you over the head with it. We need someone like her for the entertainment industry. I’m afraid even Mel is too entrenched in it to help…

I voted no, not evil. A followup question should be, “is it good”, and my answer is no, not since about the 6th or 7th season, when they generally gave up on plots and character development, and focused more on zany adventures and Homer’s hare-brained schemes, and celebrity-centered episodes.

In the Chicago area, they show reruns three times a day, and it is very striking when you see something from season 2 or 3, and then a few hours later from season 12, and you just remark how far they have fallen.

It makes fun of itself

‘But mom, if we don’t watch the violence we will never be desensitized!’

And I agree - not a kids show -

Mildly offensive? YEP

Does it offend ME? NOPE

Do I watch? Always…even collecting them on Dvd

Would I let a child watch? Not under the age of 13

I love the Simpsons…tells more about how our society lives than Leave it to Beaver did (whatever that means… 😛 ) I love sarcasm and satire.

Now as for SouthPark… 😃

I watch that to…and it does offend me from time to time… but I like the SCATHING biting satire… they’re equal opportunity offenders. Got them on Dvd as well… would NEVER let a child under 16 watch…

It looks like I am only one of two so far who voted “evil and I don’t have a TV”. About the only screen I stare into now is a computer screen. Even that I try to limit my time on. I sure do not miss programming like “The Simpsons”.

“Did I just say that out loud?” (Homer) My husband loves the show and has watched it since it started. I didn’t care for it but dh didn’t think it was a problem so our kids have grown up watching it. My favoirte episode was with Blinky the 3 eyed fish. Anyone remember that one?

Aww… come on. This show is completely harmless. I watch it every day and walk out happy with laughter. It hasn’t affected my morals, and any child as intelligent as I would not have a problem watching this show. Believe me, many kids are as intelligent as me, and all of them that I know watch this show and interpret it the same way as me: harmless. Lighten up a bit, eh? It’s just TV. It doesn’t dictate our life. 👍
