Did ya catch the XMas show last week? At the end, an old man way up on a hill is trapped in the snow and shoots a rescue flare…the whole town sees it in the sky and thinks its the star of bethlehem… 😛

And I was pleasantly surprised at the show…Homer stated to the effect of…“God Bless us all…even the atheists…though we’re probably right and not them”… 😃

the simpsons is one of my fav shows - it’s incredibly funny - it makes me laugh every time. it makes fun of everything - but has a good moral overall. i’ve rarely been offended - usually not at all.

Mocking me?: Haha, no biggie.

Mocking Jesus or the doctrines of my faith?: Shame on you, I’ll take issue with that.
I just got into an argument with a good friend of mine this week because there was some bit on “The Simpsons” making fun of conservatives who think all Christians should watch “The Passion of the Christ.” I told him that I didn’t appreciate the idea of mocking “The Passion” or Mel Gibson for making the movie. My friend told me I needed to learn to laugh at myself. I said that is not a problem, but laughing at my religion is.

those of you who don’t watch the simpsons might not understand that the show never (to my knowledge) makes fun of Christianity, or catholicism. it DOES make fun of Christians, and catholics. and rightly so - we’re a pretty funny lot.

i’ve seen many faith affirming, God fearing statements made on the show. and they seem all the more poignant to be coming from such an ususual source.

i don’t suggest that everyone should watch the simpsons, or that there’s anything wrong with those who don’t. each to his own, as far as entertainment goes. but i can tell you from years of experience, that the simpsons are not evil, and are not a threat to our faith.

south park on the other hand…

I would have tended to agree with you until the post-Super Bowl episode last Sunday. That parody on “The Passion of the Christ” really made me cringe. Normally, I’m a big fan of the Simpsons, but this episode crossed my boundaries for poking fun at Christians in a tasteful way. :nope:

Crude, horrible influence

My mom never let me watch it, nor did she allow South Park. If I watch the stuff now, I can barely stand it. The Simpsons is mildly entertaining sometimes, but I prefer not to watch it.

I think the premise of the question is silly, I do not believe there are any “evil” motives behind the production of the Simpsons episodes.
I find the show hilarious, satirical with some good lessons learnt by the Simpson family. Usually the only way they get out of a crises is by pulling together as a family and little Lisa is always there as a good concsience (even tho’ she calls herself buddhist)
In fact I find it is one of the few things I enjoy on Tele, instead of these “reality” shows or Queers sorting out straight guys. In fact Australian TV is full of American ****, blow them up, shoot them down and always undermine morals and values while youre doing it.
Homer the anti-hero!!

Not evil. Intelligent and funny and one of the best comedies on TV. I agree that it is not a kids’ show. My religion teacher in school was a priest and he loved it!

One of the episodes that I thought had a really strong moral message was when Homer had illegal cable installed. Lisa protested because she said it was stealing and eventually they got rid of it. Many people rationalise things like illegal cable tv, downloading illegal music etc. and this episode could teach a valuable lesson.

I find that when the show makes fun of something it often is not an attack to be taken at face-value. It points out in a very real way how common prejudices, that have evolved from misunderstanding one another, are deeply rooted in modern society.
Bart: "I’m starving. Mom, can we go Catholic so we can get communion wafers and booze?"

Marge: “No, no one is going Catholic.” Three children is enough, thank you."

Love It!!!
Even that line had me in stitches!
Someone else posted “lighten up” I agree. I bet Our Lord gets a giggle or two from some of the antics on the show.
Excellent! :rotfl:

However I was not impressed with thier frivolous portrayal of homosexual ‘marriages’
Whats happeing to the writers???

Too tired to go too in depth but we need to be able to laugh at ourselves. Though not a childrens show it does deal with a lot of ongoing social issues and come on who can admit the don’t laugh at Flanders then stop for a second and go “wait, I did that!”.

Oh and anyone else see that leprachan that tells me to burn things? 😛

It’s the ‘culture of critique’. It’s negative.

The moral lesson is sheer feint.

It’s simple, pacey, colourful, seductive and worthless. Yuk!

…i respectfully disagree… it’s an adult cartoon (means not for small children of impressionable years), and as adults you can take it or leave it… i watch for the humor (HUMOR), not for the moral lesson… that’s what church is for, IMHO…

simple (we agree) “it’s a cartoon”!!!, pacey, (give you that) colorful (you bet), seductive??? to an adult? … worthless?? to you maybe… (i respect your opinion, just don’t agree)…

Peace:thumbsup:

It sends subliminal (and not so subliminal, especially if you’re on to them) messages against Christianity, conservativism, and the like. I’m just so shocked at how many people I know who HAVE been affected by t.v. like this. They all come out thinking exactly like the people who write this stuff want them to think. Some people are smarter than that, but most just don’t notice the little ways it creeps into their thinking.

I find it interesting how we hesitate to call something evil, even when it is blatantly so, whenever it’s amusing or entertaining. No wonder America is getting more liberal right along with the t.v. station owners and film directors.

Its witty , funny, and educated. And also I belive the episode in which Homer converted to Catholocism was very even handed and actually pro-catholic. Once you go Vatican, you’ll never go back again.

Oh goodness!
The Simpsons is not “evil”. They actually sometimes have Christian values in them, and mention God multiple times throughout their episodes.
