My question would be, if you were invited to the White House to meet the President, would you go as you are? In jeans or shorts etc.? I doubt it. Why would one give more honor to a mere man than to God.

A person doesn’t have to wear an expensive outfit, however wearing clothes you would wear to a ball game or barbeque, just doesn’t seem appropriate in the House of God.

Years ago no one would dare wear what they wear today to church. Most protestants are much more careful in what they wear to church and they are not in the Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Body, Soul and Divinity.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

YES, YES, YES!

And to the OP,

“Certain fashions will be introduced
that will offend Our Lord very much.” ***

I did read it. It was devoid of charity. It was full of the attitude of the Pharisee form the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. All I was trying to say is that we need to concern ourselves primarily with our own holiness, rather than the holiness of others. Why? because we cannot read their hearts. So maybe the dress inappropriately for Mass. Perhaps they don’t even realize that they should be paying closer attention to their dress when receiving the Lord. On the other hand, there are things they are doing in their life that you don’t know about but they are truly holy. If more Catholics (and I count my self here as well) would be more concerned with our own holiness rather than if someone else meets our standards, you would see an absolute transformation in the overall holiness of our parishes.
…we need to concern ourselves primarily with our own holiness
That’s fine, but for Sunday Mass we need to concern ourselves with Catholic standards of morality in dress to:
  1. Give God the very best in appearance we have. Not in a conceited way but in thanksgiving for all His Blessings. It is a way of thanking God for His Abundance.
  2. Not to give scandal for immodest clothing. Remember there are children in Church and heed Our Lord’s warning on scandalizing the children especially with immodest clothing. See Millstone
Perhaps they don’t even realize that they should be paying closer attention to their dress when receiving the Lord
Really? I bet they wouldn’t dress like that if they were going to court in front of a Judge.

Code:
Exactly. Judas was concerned with the holiness of Mary. He tried to make her look foolish for wasting that expensive alabaster jar on Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Judas was concerned with his own holiness and he wanted everybody to know that he would have sold it and given the money to the poor. But he was rebuked by Our Lord. Jesus said: "Let her alone; why do you molest her? She hath wrought a good work upon me. For the poor you have always with you, but me you have not always."
Attend first to the things of God. Where would all our great Gothic Cathedrals be if we had the mindset of Judas. Oh, God doesn’t need that big expensive cathedral for Him to dwell in and for us to worship. Let us build a smaller, cheaper, less ornate church for he knows our hearts and we will have more money to give to the poor. False Humility
Look at St. Peters Basilica. Beautiful, and why? Because it is the principle House of God in all of Christendom. And if more money could have been raised and spent on this edifice it would have. Why? For nothing is too good for God.

Welcome to my ignore list.

Now the question was asked, if an angle came to you and told you Jesus was outside waiting, what would you wear.

My answer is whatever was closest, because I’d be running. It’d probably be an old pair of Levi’s and whatever shoes were closest, probably a half-dirty tee shirt too. I wouldn’t brush my teeth, put on deoderant, take a shower, or comb my hair 'cause that would take too much time. And you know what, I think Jesus would give me a big 'ol hug too!

Now, on the other hand, the question was asked if the Pope was visiting, what would you wear?

My answer is I’d take a shower, put on my finest clothes, and get ready to see a big-wig. Why? Because the Pope is not God and can only judge me by what he sees. To the Pope, and other Catholics, dressing poorly would be a sign of disrespect, because we are only human, and judge according to looks.

Now, if this post were on modesty, not merely dress, i would support a modesty code. But not merely a dress code. Jeans can be modest. A tee shirt can be modest. Fancy clothes that cover the entire body (think fir coat) can be very immodest. A fir coat would draw attention to oneself and away from the mass. That is probably more offensive to God than the Levi’s.

I thought I did that with my first post. Re-read it again and search the biblical texts concerning Judas and the alabaster jar and Martha scolding Mary for not helping her in the kitchen because Mary was too busy helping Our Lord. There’s much to glean here.
Some people you just can argue in defence of your opinion they always have to be right. Sad, but thats how it sometimes is.

You do realize you are going before Jesus to be judged, don’t you? If you were going to court to fight a speeding ticket, would you wear Levis and a teeshirt?

Why do we keep equating God with man? Do you think Jesus will judge me more favorably if i dress nicely? Maybe a tux would suffice?

You know, Jesus loves you, died for you. You are his beloved. He loves you more than your own father. If you were being judged by your own father(or mother), would fancy clothes help you much? Or does your father know you so well your dress would be nearly irrelevant?

This post hits the issue dead on. It says, when we meet Jesus, we are going to be judged and so must therefore wear our nicest clothes, just like we were going to see a human judge. When we go to mass, God is judging us then too, and so we must wear our nicest clothes for Him then as well.

I wear nice clothes for my fellow man, because* they *care. It is polite and curteous. My wife dresses modestly so as to not stumble others. But, if a bum walks in off the street dressed in rags and smelling, I hope we’d let him into God’s house. Jesus loves him too. I don’t think I’d like to associate with a crowd of Christians too good to allow the poor into mass.

Job 1:21
Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

Truly, we are all naked before the Lord. Not even your prettiest dress will cover one ounce of sin.

It’s funny. No one has to be told on what to wear to a wedding reception. Everybody is dressed properly and tastefully. But at Church, God’s House, there’s always this “Oh, God really doesn’t care what I wear He looks into my heart” attitude. This is just a lame excuse to dress down to mundane street clothing attire. That’s the Spirit of Judas.
Why did you waste those precious perfumes anointing the feet of Our Lord? He doesn’t need that. You could have sold it and given the money to the poor.
Code:
God deserves the very best you can muster up. That is choosing the better part and it will not be taken from you.
This isn’t nearly true. At my wedding I had many friends who didn’t dress appropriately. Should I have turned them out? Gave them the boot 'cause they didn’t dress well. I didn’t. Becuase I was blessed they showed up. . . and I love them.

God cares if I stumble others. Were I to go to your wedding, I’d be sure to dress very nicely, because it’s what you care about, and for me to not dress nicely might ruin your wedding. However, some of my friends. . . now I might be tempted to go in jeans just to get under their skin. . .and they’d love it.

If I were to go to your church and sit next to you frequently, and realize at some point that you were distracted due to my ugly pants, I would probably try to dress better, for your sake. And God would bless me for it, for your sake.

However, were no one in the Cathedral but me and God, I find it hard to believe he’d be similarly upset with my ugly pants.

No one has suggested denying poor people entrance to a church.

Dress is not irrelevant. If you come before your father and mother in a slobby shirt and jeans, or if you come before them neatly, cleanly, and properly dressed it makes a difference.

Modesty is a Catholic virtue, it has a meaning in the exterior life and the interior life, you cannot dispense with one or the other.

Yes God cares about how you dress. He most certainly does. It matters, and you are responsible, and you should do your duty in regards to this responsibility. 🙂

‘When she was thrown into the air by a savage bull in the amphitheatre at Carthage, her first thought and action when she fell to the ground was to rearrange her dress to cover her thigh, because she was more concerned for modesty than pain.’

Pope Pius XII (Allocution to the girls of Catholic Action, October 6, 1940). [of St. Perpetua]

Great modesty and great propriety does the blessed Paul require of women, and that not only with respect to their dress and appearance: he proceeds even to regulate their speech. And what says he? “Let the woman learn in silence”; that is, let her not speak at all in the church; which rule he has also given in his Epistle to the Corinthians, where he says,“It is a shame for women to speak in the church” (1 Cor. xiv. 35.); and the reason is, that the law has made them subject to men."’

St. John Chrysostum, Father and Doctor of the Church

“Beyond fashion and its demands, there are higher and more pressing laws, principles superior to fashion, and unchangeable, which under no circumstances can be sacrificed to the whim of pleasure or fancy, and before which must bow the fleeting omnipotence of fashion. These principles have been proclaimed by God, by the Church, by the Saints, by reason, by Christian morality."

Pope Pius XII

Did you miss the scriptural quote where God gave the boot? 🙂 This is God you know, not casual Joe, your beer drinking neighbor’s wedding.

A dress code is not appropriate in my opinion. You’re there for Jesus, not everybody else.

I never said dress was irrelevant. And I agree modesty is important. But requiring certain attire is not important, and is irrelevant to ones salvation.

I think you don’t understand the parable. It’s a metaphore. The clothes we are supposed to wear is Jesus. Put on the blood of Christ. He covers our sin.

Your use of it to justify church clothes trivializes the scripture.

and how do you know Joe? j/k. Yeah, I have a few friends who drink beer. Can they go to church too?

There’s the literal sense and the spiritual sense, and so forth, you can’t just take the one of the scriptures. 🙂 I think if it was unfair in the literal sense… it would not have been used. 🙂

May the most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ wash away our sins. 🙂

Telling someone to dress modestly is loving them! Jesus also told those who came to Him to SIN NO MORE! When you wear clothing that is not modest you sin grievously. One woman asked God by what sin are most women condmend to hell and by what sin do most woman offend Him and he showed her that it was the woman who dressed immodestly. That was taken from “The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History” by F. X. Schouppe. I recommend reading it.
How is it possible to love someone by making dress code that possibly hinder them to come to mass?
People will not go to hell because of the dress they wear. People may go to hell if they don’t believe anymore because they seldom taking the body and blood of Jesus.

my question to you still the same, if i don’t have the dress at the moment, should i come to mass? If you say yes, then please be kind to me when you spot me with inappropriate dress. Or should i write a sign on my chest announcing why i havent got chance to do my laundry, in order to get better and rather kind and sympathetic look?

If you want to love, then let me come “as I am” so the blood can cleanse me and the bread guide me in my behavior (works, including the way I dress)"

Please decide and be firm in your decision. God bless.

If upon waking, our guardian angel said to us, “Get dressed, we’re going to meet Jesus.” I wonder what choice in clothing we’d make?
if the angel will vanish in a blink of an eye, I will go with whatever I am wearing. But if he say I have 5 minutes, I will wear my pretty dress that is easy and quick to put on. If I have 10 to 15 minutes, I will choose my best dress according to my taste, and modest according to my standard (whose else?). I’d like to look pretty for the Lord. If the archangel willing to give me extention time, I will put on my make-ups too.

I dress nicely at important events out of respect. I dress casually at unimportant events.

I suspect this discussion is being carried out on two separate fronts thus causing animosity. I don’t think anyone who favours wearing one’s Sunday best wants poor people to stay home. If all someone has is one pair of jeans then by all means wear them to Mass on Sunday. However, for the majority of the pewsitters, making an effort to show respect to God and fellow worshippers is common decency. You are not at a sporting event or tavern, you are in God’s house. Protestants get dressed up for their Sunday services and they don’t have the blessing of being before Jesus. Furthermore, it is insulting to poor people to suggest they don’t have the faculties to understand decorum and respect. I was poor once yet able to put on my Sunday best for Mass.
