I am not really sure what is supposed to be happening in those videos. A bunch of young kids are standing around watching an old Native American guy sing and beat on a drum. Some of them did some goofy dances in the background and some guys started chanting something I couldn’t understand. Seems like a big blowup over nothing.

Yeah I read the article but it is not clear what exactly was going on. Were these boys randomly harassing the Native American guy, or did the Native American guy randomly approach the boys? It’s all kind of unclear. I have a hard time believing that a group of boys went out of their way to find and taunt the indigenous people’s march. Regardless, even if they did, while stupid this just looks like a big nothing story to me, and people are trying to ruin these kids lives. People should chill and stop overreacting.

“What was going on” may have escaped you, but officials at the school and the diocese were able to figure it out.

About 4 p.m., the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High issued a joint statement that read, in part:
We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general. … We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

“The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.”

I’m kind of wondering why these kids were allowed to be wandering around without any kind of authority figure or chaperone monitoring them. Having been at these marches, generally schools have an adult or more than one policing a large group, probably in part to make sure the students don’t act stupid and focus on what they are there to do. This isn’t just a handful of kids who wandered off on their own and acted up, it seems to be a large group with nobody keeping tabs on them whatsoever.

Way to take a Catholic story we can discuss and somehow tie it to your loathing of Trump and his supporters.

Is it okay to say we shouldn’t be surprised that the man who shot Steve Scalise was an avowed Democrat?

That would be classless, and irrelevant to bad behavior.

Unsurprisingly, the Catholic High school has access to these students that I do not and can do things like, you know, ask them questions. All I was saying was that the videos just show a bunch of kids standing around a Native American guy singing. No one is saying anything to anyone. There is no context. You will also note that I said if they were harassing this guy that is stupid and wrong.

Look at the comment I made above this one. All I said was that the videos lack all context. I also said harassing this guy is wrong. Thanks for putting words in my mouth though.

Now, however I’ve seen another video. It presents another scenario where the boys were laughing and dancing and this man simply walked up in the middle of them drumming.
Can you link that video?

See, at first sight I was utterly disgusted, like most here, with what appears to have happened: a bunch of repugnant little teenage tyrants–of “Catholic” background for crying out loud–ridiculing a lone old man for singing a song. And I was typing up a reply to that effect, but then I paused before posting it because I realized that based just on the vids I’ve seen we can’t be 100% sure how the situation had arisen. So if you’ve seen a vid shedding a different light on the matter, do share it.

I posted 2 videos above
Thanks, very interesting. The vids you posted definitely give a different impression of the incident. It seems the old man singles that particular kid out and insists on standing their drumming only a few inches from his face. Strange. And in the longer shot the kid doesn’t look as glib as he originally struck me either. He seems a little puzzled actually, not sure what to do initially, and then he just smiles and bears it rather innocently. I wonder too where the report came from that the kids were chanting “build that wall”. I don’t think that was audible in any of the videos, is it? Makes me wonder now if the old man made it up.

Lesson learned (for me): don’t trust a short vid or quick assessments based on it. We tend to see what we want to see. And since righteous anger feels pretty good, we easily see things that are “sure grounds” for that emotion.

The problem is that the diocese and the school already issued, yesterday, a joint statement apologizing to the Native American man and denouncing the students’ behavior. Therefore, the Church has already taken the position that this wasn’t just innocent fun and games.

The reports have been saying that the students got into an argument with another group of students and the man drumming walked into the middle of the group to try to make peace, then they wouldn’t let him leave and chanted “Build the Wall.”

The mother of the main kid in the video has already sent angry e-mails to at least one video outlet claiming it’s all fake news and her son’s life is being ruined over nothing and fomenting hate blah blah blah…the usual “my kid is perfect” stuff.

If all we had was the video to go on, then I would agree that without additional context, the interpretation of the video is subject to error. But we now have additional context. We have the reaction of the Catholic high school who, presumably, talked to the boys involved and got other eyewitness accounts.

The reaction of the school shows that this was not “Catholic” behavior, and should not reflect negatively on the Catholic Church. The story is interesting just because it is so un-common.

And that’s why Catholics should just turn the cheek and be humble.

Take off the MAGA hats.

Take up the rosary.

All the while they were chanting “build the wall” I guess they figured these Indigenous folk are too much a treasure and building the wall will keep them here…
