I thought of another point this morning on my way to work while listening to mass. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
If we have nothing to ‘do’, then why is there so much talk in scripture of us (Christians) being judged.
1 Cor 3 : 10-16
[10] According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it.
WE are building on the foundation that Christ himself laid.
[11] For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
The foundation is not for us to lay.
We agree that Christ alone made the only possible sufficient, perfect sacrifice to give us this foundation.
[12] Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw –
[13] each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.
[14] If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
[15] If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
So our work will be judged. That judgment brings either reward or a suffering loss.
[16] Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
It’s the Holy Spirit within us that make us Christians and lead to do God’s good work that He set aside for us.
While led by the Holy Spirit, the judgment is not of the Holy Spirit’s work, but of our works. We have ownership of our decisions.
I do not believe this judgment is for our salvation, though.
Even bad works will cause us to suffer loss, but it doesn’t say we lose salvation.
Neither can we say from this scripture that we earn our salvation.
There is nothing we can do to earn our way into heaven.
This scripture does show that our works will be judged.
Would you still say that works are just not necessary as if there is no accounting for them.
