Please keep in mind that Augustine is a Catholic saint and that Pelagious is considered a heretic. This was true when the Pelagian heresy raged in the early 5th century; it was true when semi-Pelagianism later reared its ugly head; and it is true today. It seems most contemporary Roman Catholics have a Pelagius understanding of free will as compared to Augustine’s view of free will.
Around 405, it is said that Pelagius heard a quotation from Augustine’s work Confessions, ‘Give me what you command and command what you will.’ This verse concerned Pelagius because it seemed from this verse that Augustine was teaching doctrine contrary to traditional Christian understandings of grace and free will, turning man into a mere automaton.
Catholics condemn any form of Pelagianism. Claims to the contrary are largely due to misunderstandings of Catholic teaching and perhaps Pelagianism.
