Rapid change is everywhere, and the Church will need to adapt.
Adapt to what?

If people wish to commit adultery, shall the Church adapt her teachings to make them happy?
If people enjoy pornography, shall the Church adapt her teachings to allow it?
If people enjoy sex outside of marriage, shall the Church adapt her teachings to bless it?
If people like to defraud their neighbors, shall the Church adapt her teachings to smile upon it?

Not likely.

These viewpoints cannot be held by Catholics.
Propositions Condemned by Pope Pius IX:
  1. Divine revelation is imperfect, and therefore subject to a continual and indefinite progress, corresponding with the advancement of human reason.
  2. The Roman Pontiff can, and ought to, reconcile himself, and come to terms with progress, liberalism and modern civilization.
That is not my opinion but the teaching of the Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Adapt to the extremely rapid changes in th world.

Hi, I agree. I was just being sarcastic with that person’s Holier-than-thou comment.
That wasn’t a holier than thou comment.

Those mostly come from people on here trying to walk the line between massive government involvement to “help the poor” while ignoring the disastrous results. Also, those who advocate for a Catholic theocracy get in over their head sometimes too.

And it’s also to see how much they can get away with voting democrat for ultimately selfish reasons but by framing it up as “the Catholic thing to do” as much as possible.

God sees and hears through ALL.

:rotfl:

I find it amusing when progressives refer to their ways as “modern” and “progress”, which are misleading just like their name.

Nothing that liberalism claims to have found or discovered is nothing new or original. It is the same recycled garbage that history has rejected over and over because it doesn’t work.

The Catholic (universal) Church will need to adapt to the needs of people everywhere.
And if it ever does adapt to be modern and accept all immorality as normal and accptable, then it will become irrelevant like the protestant churches that have done the same. Sounds like a great idea.

I think we need some definitions here before I can determine whether or not I agree with the bishop.

(1) Same-sex marriage: That’s obviously a contradiction in terms.

(2) Same-sex civil union: I have no idea how this is different from a same-sex marriage.

Can someone help me out with how it’s different? Obviously the bishop makes a distinction between the two.

Any help would be appreciated.

A same-sex civil union has very little representation in taxes and less rights compared to same-sex marriage, which treats them as if they were a married couple.

Completely wrong. Very much depends on which State it is.

Wow. So would your position be that there has been no social change or progress in the areas of, democracy, children’s rights, women’s rights, gay rights, racial equality, worker’s rights, elimination of poverty, franchise rights, animal rights… on and on…? these are all progressive or “liberal” ideas in their time.

Is it fair to say that you would call all of these things which call progress as “recycled garbage that history has rejected over and over”? Would you prefer a monarchy and slavery, and women unable to own property, with children treated as property?

If you look at history, you will find that progressives and liberals are generally viewed in hindsight to have been on the correct side of the moral equation. That is why, when things improve, we call it “progress”. That sounds strangely like “progressive” to me.

You’d have to pick and choose what parts of things considered “liberal”. Laissez-faire economics, Communism, and the like haven’t been on the right side of history. 🤷

Or country for that matter as the bishop, who is not an American bishop, is likely not speaking from the perspective of the American concept of civil union.

Unfortunately, even if this were coming from the Vatican, it would still be a case of “too little, too late.”

At the current rate of gay marriage adoption, in public opinion, and in law, the Church will quickly find itself to be a strident voice in a secular society. the more strident the voice, then the less attractive it will become to converts and its own membership, and the more it will be ignored.

i am in no way saying that the Church should accept gay marriage. but, i believe that it needs to get a grip on the fact that it is just one of many religious organizations in an otherwise secular world, and that world is becoming increasingly secularized.
I always find these kinds of comments interesting, and yes, the world is becoming increasingly secular of course, because it is losing its very foothold, the faith, although those most affected by it seem none the wiser. The Church gives to humanity the most pondered answer ever sought regarding the reason for man’s existence – not only the answer, but the very means of attaining it. How very incongruous and perverse of man, therefore, to want to change both the means and the answer. The Church desires to give to mankind it’s most profound and exigent need – that of achieving salvation. In our enormous pride and confidence in our own resources and understanding, we dare to combat the ultimate Source as we side with that which is His enemy.

So as God answers Job with His own questions, “Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth – tell me which is the way to the dwelling place of light and where is the abode of darkness?” and just as Job eventually realizes his own folly, the bottom line is that we can only pray for Catholics who would dare to speak with such audacity.

True, but can you name any progress in social justice gained from conservativism? Indeed, the founding of the US was quite radical. By definition, conservatism is the lack of change - keeping what has been in the past. It abhors social justice, if achieving it involves change. Dictatorship and totalitarianism are conservative ideas, much older than the radical notion of democracy. So, while Communism and Socialism work very well on a certain scale, say in a monastery, a convent, or a small village, when one introduces totalitarian government (which is contrary to the principles of these philosophies), you end up with something opposed to social justice. But this failure is not inherent to Communism, etc…

You mention Laissea-faire economics. The strongest recent proponent in the US was President Reagan. Mr Bush was also a fan. Neither of these men’s agenda could be called liberal, today. I agree with you that it is an unjust economic system. It may have been a radical idea at one time (thought I doubt it) It is considered part of the evil side of the Republican party agenda by many.

I have no problems with the state authorizing same sex civil unions. In fact, I believe civil unions are all that the state needs to be legitimizing in the first place.
