Since you are so fired up about idolatry, why don’t you start a new thread instead of hi-jacking this one? I’m sure that Catholics and Orthodox will participate.
Yes, open a thread about it. This thread is about Christy becoming Orthodox, not about idolatry.

You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth (Exodus 20:4).

The prohibition is against making ANY likeness of what is:
  1. In heaven above (including God Himself, but this also includes saints or anyone who we think is in heaven).
  2. Earth; and
  3. In the water
Obviously the prohibition is on objects designed to be used in worship, however, forget about how you’re allowed to “use” such objects, we cannot even make them in the first place.

You mean things built exactly according to the specifications God enumerated?

Again if you want to get technical He forbids making them in the first place.

God did enumerate certain objects, buildings, the Ark to be built in accordance with His specifications. God also ordered the Jews to wipe out enemy armies, which would otherwise be murderous.

The point is yes God can create exceptions to His rules for His purposes, however, the ten commandments are the default rules.

Indeed this phraseology is even more problematic in other verses:

*so that you do not act corruptly and make a graven image for yourselves in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky,

the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water below the earth (Deuteronomy 4:16-18).

You shall not make for yourselves (A)idols, nor shall you set up for yourselves an image or a sacred pillar, nor shall you place a figured stone in your land to bow down to it; for I am the LORD your God (Leviticus 26:1)*
You forget the operative verse (Deut. 4:15): 15 “So watch yourselves carefully, since you did not see any form on the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire.

And Leviticus 26:2 ‘You shall keep My sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary; I am the LORD…19 “And beware not to lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, and be drawn away and worship them and serve them, those which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven."

But after this:

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’” 16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has made Him known…2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME.” 18 The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken…14:7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” 8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me?"

And Col.1:13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. 18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. 19 For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet** He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy** and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister. 24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions. 25 Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, 26 that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, 27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. 29 For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.

And Hebrews 9:11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; 12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. 16 For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. 17 For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. 18 Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. 19 For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. 23 Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but **now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested **to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself…12:18 For you **have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, **19 and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them. 20 For they could not bear the command, “IF EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED.” 21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, “I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling.” 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel. 25 See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. 26 And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN.” 27 This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

And Acts 17:22 So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects. 23 “For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 “The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; 25 nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; 26 and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, 27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His children.’ 29 “Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man. 30 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

And Matthew 28:17 When they SAW Him they WORSHIPPED Him.

And that’s all scripure alone.👍

Yes, open a thread about it. This thread is about Christy becoming Orthodox, not about idolatry.
Just a quick note: the year before I became Orthodox, I burned icons, and was quite zealous in exterpating “idolatry.”

Like St. Paul (Col. 15:9-10) I am the least of the Orthodox and not even fit to be called an Orthodox because I persecuted God’s church. But by God’s grace I am what I am, and his grace shown to me was not wasted. Instead, I worked harder than all the others-not I, of course, but God’s grace that was with me.

This would make a great thread, I will start one about burning idolatry, or what we may consider idolatry.

My prayers that the Orthodox can live up to your expectations. (Actually, I think I’ll be praying more for the Orthodox! 😉 )

FWIW, I have also seriously considered " 'doxing " during the past several months. However, my reasons have nothing to do with anything “wrong” with the Roman Church - only with what seems “right” with the Orthodox.

I am still on the fence. However, if the time comes that I did make that decision, I hope I would be able to express my respect, and gratitude, towards the Mother who taught me everything I know about Christ, and supported me through some long, difficult times, on my way out Her door.
You may be too excited and happy! :extrahappy: :dancing:

Hope to see you on the other side of the fence.

I know from experience that sitting on top of a fence for long can get mighty uncomfortable. Just go through the gate is much easier 😉

A few authors to read to balance out what I am sure you have already read from the Catholic perspective:
Clark Carlton
Frank Schaeffer
Michael Whelton
Fr. Theodore Pulcini

God then contradicts Himself by telling the Israelites to make images of cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant, correct?
This is why we hymn the Virgin Theotokos as “more honorable than the Cheribim.”
The Ark of the Covenant was used in Old Testament worship (it was God’s footstool, hidden behind the Holy of Holies); so God contradicted Himself again?
The Fathers constantly state that the footstool refers to the Cross, so when it says “worship at His footstool,” it was prophecy of the True Sacrifice of/in the True Temple (for why footstool, consult the Protoevangelium Genesis 3:15: the heel part. Btw, it is Golgotha because Adam’s skull was the there: in the Church of the Resurrection, the Chapel of Adam is below Calvary, and shows the crack through which the Precious Blood of the Second Adam fell on the skull of the First Adam, who awoke and prophecized himself, It is Accomplished. John 19:30.

As is often found in inscriptions on Orthodox Crosses, “Calvary has become the Mount of Paradise.”
Again, God ordered the making of images of cherubim, seraphim (massive at that, at the entrance of the Temple), the brass sea, the bronze serpent…
As we hymn the Theotokos:
It is not meet that man should see God
upon whom the ranks of angels dare not glance,
But through you O Virgin Theotokos
did the Word take flesh and become manifest to men
together with the angel we call you “Blessed.”

O sanctified Temple and Spiritual Paradise
The Glory of Virgins
from whom God was incarnate and became a child
Our God from before the ages.
He made your body into at Throne
And your womb He made more spacious than the heavens.
All of Creation rejoices in you. O Full of Grace, Glory to you!

More honorable than the Cherubim and more glorious than the Seraphim.
The point of the first and second commandments are;
  1. Not to have other gods before Him and,
  1. Not to make images of those gods (idols)
The two commandments go together. It is not a prohibition of images per se, or else God is contradicting Himself in ordering images to be made, and God is not a God of contradictions.
1 Corinthians 13:12.

Yes James, I will join in the prayers for reunification. Prayers I would not expect to be answered in my life-time because Rome would have to do so much back stepping in renouncing the heresies she currently embraces. Per some on Eastern Catholic Forums, Rome has already begun back stepping in regards to the doctrine of Limbo which is a definate start. Yet, because of God, there is always hope.
What specific heresies exactly?

What’s your point? The Jews, and Buddhists have been around for longer than you – are they right?
Jesus, God Incarnate, started the Orthodox Church through His Apostles.

The Jewish faith was started by God and fulfilled with Christianity.

Buddhism was started by a man.

You are a member of a church started by a man too. I realize that, as a Protestant in the 2000’s that you have simply found yourself in on of 30,000 “Christian” churches that were started by men.

What I wonder though is why and how you could possible remain in a church started by a mere man some time in the last 500 years rather than join The Church which Christ Jesus established through His Apostles?

Is Jesus, Who is Fully God and Fully Man, not good enough for you? What’s the deal?

Sorry I haven’t got farther than post #3. If it’s already been answered, please indicate in which post(s). If not, I certainly need a clear answer. Maybe there are misunderstandings or misreadings? If there are, they should be addressed, shouldn’t they?

We pray that you also find your home in Orthodoxy. Just like you, my reason has more to do with what is right in the Orthodox Church.
As I think I’ve said many times, I thank my Lutheran background for the grounding in scripture, etc. it gave me, not to mention my baptism.

As Bp. Job (a saintly man, worthy of all honor, and a convert from the Vatican) told my godson (an adult convert from Episcopalianism, son of one of their priests) “Don’t curse what you are coming from, for it brought you here.”

Yeah, if you say anything to yourself enough times you will believe it – doesn’t mean I will.

How are you sure it’s the Catholic Church which has drifted in schism and not the Orthodox Church… or even both?

Christ be with her.

At least she still has the Sacraments of the Church. Had she gone Protestant I would be pretty distraught right now, but I know that God had a hold of her good and is holding onto her…so I don’t worry. 🙂

I’m not being rude or hateful against Protestants, either. I was a Protestant for 18 years of my life. It would be worse to be Catholic or Orthodox and become Protestant than it would be to be raised Protestant. One would be having the Truth (or most of it) and abandoning it for heresy. Being raised Protestant would be through no fault of your own.
As Father Caropi says, “All the Protestants have is the Bible and two [actually, only one] sacraments, AND LOOK WHAT THEY ACCOPLISH WITH JUST THAT,” his point being that us Catholics (Vatican and Orthodox) should be ashamed. And he’s right. To whom much is given…

If it’s the Orthodox Church that jesus founded, how come saint Ignatius of Antioch, who died in 107 (!), calls it the Catholic Church in his letters?

A few leave Rome, and hundreds come back to Rome. Good bye James.
Hi James,

The ones who go back to Rome are the ones who have simply dropped their faith altogether or joined some Protestant Church. When the decision to come back is made, I would venture to guess that it’s 99.9% don’t even know the Orthodox Church exists.

But a great many come to Orthodox from Protestantism through Rome or straight from Rome. Two examples off the top of my head: Michael Whelton and Fr. Theodore Pulcini. They’ve both written books - read them.

It is quite interesting that the Orthodox Church calls itself as the Catholic Church, since it is indeed the only Church then before Rome left Orthodoxy.
