Father Baron said something interesting this evening on EWTN. He said the words of Jesus have POWER (emphasis mine). He was explaining what happens at the consecration when the priest says the words of Jesus and the bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Jesus.
I was thinking of some of the examples Father Baron used, “Lazarus, come out!” and Lazarus came out of the tomb. “Little girl, arise!” and the girl came back to life.
I was wondering how many examples there must be that show that the words of Jesus have power… can anyone think of some? (It seems like a great exercise for Lent.)

How fitting is it that the Word made Flesh channels his power through spoken word?

How about the example at the Garden of Olives when he said; 'I am He" and the soldiers that came to arrest him fell to the ground!

John 14
23 Jesus answered and said to him, “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.

All words are power and we should think of this more often. Like for example when someone deeply offends you, and you feel bad, those words had power over you to hurt you in ways which may go deeper than you thought. So we should think about what we do with our own words all the time.

I was also thinking of the impression he was making on the people at the time and his apostles. Like when he said to the man on the stretcher that the friends pulled up to the roof and let down in front of Jesus. Is that when he said “your sins are forgiven you”? And then to prove he had the POWER he said “arise, take up thy bed and walk”?
What I am amazed by is that if so many of the words of Jesus caused supernatural things to occur, it is an easy step for us to believe him when he says, “I and the Father are one…” or “this is my body, this is my blood”…

Unfortunately, it is not easy for many. Many people refuse to believe in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, even when Christ bestows the power to forgive sins to his Apostles. 😞

One of my favorite–Jesus said to the good thief beside him on the cross on Good Friday, “I tell you, this day you will be with me in Paradise…”
We didn’t see it, but because of his words and actions that were seen and reported in the New Testament, we can believe it…

Just a few examples:

Then Jesus touched their eyes and said, “Let it happen, then, just as you believe!”
Matthew 9:29

Then Jesus said to the officer, “Go home, and what you believe will be done for you.”
And the officer’s servant was healed that very moment.
Matthew 8:13

Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet, and come out of the man!”
The evil spirit shook the man hard, gave a loud scream, and came out of him.
Mark 1:25-26

So Jesus said to her, “Because of that answer, go back home, where you will find that the demon has gone out of your daughter!”
Mark 7:29

This Sunday’s Gospel about the gardener lovingly tending an unfruitful fig tree reminded me of another, less fortunate, fig tree:

Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went over to it, but found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again.” And immediately the fig tree withered. (Matthew 21:19)
