Our good Bishops shouting for union rights should keep their noses where they belong, in their theology books.
This is not the role of the bishop. They are shepherds. We sheep like to think that we are all equal and we forget that we are sheep. Perhaps instead of just slamming on the Catholic Church’s leadership, you would care to show where one of these “progressive” bishops have commented on this issue in contradiction to Catholic doctrine. I will see if you can find such an instance to justify your degradation of Church authority.

Hmm, abortion is a greater evil than doing away with collective bargaining, especially considering that a majority of the country does just fine without it.

So, you should ask yourself if the Democrats are evil, before you suggest that Republicans are.
As the issue is not abortion here, it is totally legitimate to question the moral legitimacy of the Republican position without reference to the Democrats on abortion. The two issues are no where nearly equal in moral evil, but they are not related.

No it is not the issue, but if one is suggesting the Republicans are evil for opposing collective bargaining for public employees, they need a reality check.

Our good Bishops, 3/4th of them, have forgotten how to teach theology, which is the greatest part of their responsibility in order to have Catholics believe if they don’t suck up to public unions, one is committing a MORTAL sin
Please cite one example of where 3/4 of the bishops have told Catholics that it is a mortal sin to be in favor of public unions…
The progressive USCCB (whether Bishops wrote it or not, they must have approved it.) have declared in their latest attempt at infallibility that unions are a moral right.
Please cite where they have claimed that they were speaking infallibly. Do you have ANY idea what infallibility is???
you will see they are right in the pocket of leftist organizations.
Besides your insulting our Catholic bishops, can you show where they are in the pocket of leftist organizations?
The Church, the unions and the government need a thorough cleansing.
As far as the Church is concerned, whm would you start with? The Pope?
For a more rational statement see Bishop Morlino of Wisc.'s take on the situation.
Our good Bishops shouting for union rights should keep their noses where they belong, in their theology books.
Your sarcastic use of “good bishops” is noted. If bishops should keep their noses in their theology books, then the same applies to Morlino, too, wouldn’t you say?

A party can be evil for one thing without necessarily being evil for another.

I said “compromise” not “negotiate”. The REALITY is that if the Republicans removed the language about collective bargaining from the BUDGET REPAIR BILL, the 14 Democratic senators would return and vote on it. However, in three months the Wisconsin legislature must pass ANOTHER budget bill. The Republicans can insert the language about limiting union collective bargaining rights into that bill if they like. They might even get it passed.

I believe the right to collective bargaining is fundamental to protecting the dignity of workers. However, even if I were against it, I can still see how the current Republican tactics are not only failing, they are turning the voters of Wisconsin against them. Heavy-handed tactics always invite backlash - regardless of which political party is using them.

Wisconsin is a PURPLE state - it can go either way. Rasmussen is a conservative poll, and even they can find little support among Wisconsin voters for the Republican position on this one. So, are the Republicans evil or are they just idiots?
The recent election belies much of what you say. The people of Wisconsin elected the republicans they did to get the budget under control. Many businesses protect the “dignity” of their employees without collective bargaining. And as far as polls go, a pollster can get any result he/she wishes. Unions may have been useful (I question that) early on, but they completely run amok of late and a very low proportion of “workers” are in unions. The only people who do really well in unions are the union bosses. I would hate to think that I had to rely on someone else to bargain for my money.

THANK YOU!

I think it would be interesting to do a poll on what Republicans, as a whole, not just the Catholic/Christian ones, REALLY think the priorities should be. I’ll bet tax cuts and deregulation come in first waaaaaaaaaaaaaay before the “non-negotiables.”

Other than abortion, what other non negotiables are there?

The platform of your party is evil on abortion, which pretty much makes it evil itself and unworthy of my support. If the tables were turned many pro life republicans would vote democrat, including me.

I vote Democratic. I have nothing against your voting Republican and would never ask anyone to vote my way. It’s a personal choice. I support your right to believe the Democratic Party to be unworthy of your support.

There are five:

Opposition to Abortion
Opposition to Same-sex “marriage”
Opposition to Human Cloning
Opposition to Embryonic Stem Cell Research

I forget the last one. I’m sure someone else can supply it. Sorry. 😦

Consider this. We know that mortal sin is something that separates us from God’s grace and can damn our immortal soul. It simply must be fought at every opportunity. However, the serious nature of mortal sin is never a license to practice venial sin and damage our relationship with God. Likewise, even though we may support the election of someone because of their position on critical issues, there is no reason we can not also object to anything the person does that we see as immoral, even if it is not gravely so. Now the issue of collective bargaining laws on public unions allows for a diversity of opinion. We may disagree with a position. I know that I do not agree with all the union positions that the pro-union people here hold. However, we should not discount the moral component of social justice, just because greater issues exist in society.

Whereas, the taxpayers of Wisconsin are the actual employers, then let each taxpayer receive a copy of each government employee’s W-2 form, so they can know how much money each government employee gets paid and will then have some basis for the collective bargaining process.

The taxpayers of Wisconsin might even decide, when they get the information, that many of those jobs no longer to be done at all by anyone.
I welcome the opportunity to enlighten you. Government wages are a matter of public record. Let me clarify one more thing.

For the umpteenth time. This struggle is not about money. It’s about union busting. Plain and simple.

Barack Obama and every Democrat Congress since Franklin Delano Roosevelt has denied federal employees collective bargaining for wages. Are they also guilty of unionbusting or that truth only when a Republican follows in the footsteps that it becomes wrong?

While I agree that it is not about money, or at least money in the short term, I also do not think that they will really make the unions disappear. Rather than “busting” I would say it was about reducing the union’s power. I personally can not see why a compromise can not be reached. If the unions want a voice, they should have the right to be heard. Surely there is a way to allow them to be heard collectively by the decision-makers and given a chance for an exchange of ideas without giving them the final say in their own contract. I can also see eliminating the ability to strike in most public fields.

The wage SCALES are public record. The actual money paid to specific individuals are highly guarded secrets and deliberately guarded by deception. We have examples of teachers, police and firefighters claiming they make much less than they are actually paid.

The deception is a national scandal.

Nonsense. Check out the Sacramento Bee where you will see the reason I never give out my last name to people on the phone at work.

Actually, it proves that public unions are essentially powerless when a governor, such as iconic Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, the epitome of Republican leadership, has no regard for the law. My pay has gone down $6,000 per year over the past two years and I’ve been doing more work in less time than I was two years ago. Don’t tell me I’m overpaid or underworked. The only reason I stay is for the deferred compensation which will merely give me a cushion for when I try to work after I retire.

I know that there a lot of people suffering due to the messed up economy. I truly and sincerely wish the best for every single one of you and hope everyone finds a good job that has benefits and a future.
