No, you don’t just add them; you have to add them and divide. For example, if the total number of people who have voted (35% of whom voted for Trump) was the same as the total number of people who have not voted yet (36% of whom say they support Trump), you would add and divide by 2, and the percentage of Trump support would be 35.5%.
Yeah, yeah. Except that I believe the “71% comment” was a joke. (I guess I could be wrong about that – there **are **some Trump supporters out there who seem a little bit out of touch with reality. ;))

It is not a backroom strategy. It is in the rules. For Trump to avoid this, he needs to win the requisite 1237 delegates. If he does not get to 1237, he could still win the nomination on the first vote–but according to the rules, which Trump knows about, after the first vote, if no candidate has the 1237 delegates needed to win, the nomination can be contested.

No backroom in any of that–just the rules and they are rules every campaign understands.
there is lots of strategizing going on.

If it was, I didn’t catch it.

He has insulted Muslims,…
But why is it an insult to say that you do not agree with chopping off the heads of innocent Christian people? In one case Muslims chained a living Catholic priest to the back of a truck and dragged him through the city until he was dead. Recently, Muslims in Yemen attacked a Catholic missionary charity center, killing four nuns and slaughtering thirteen more people. These nuns here were doing charity work, helping the poor. A Muslim couple shot dead 14 innocent people in San Bernadino. Muslims killed innocent children at the Boston marathon. How many jihadists are entering into Europe under the guise of being migrants? Hundreds of young girls have been molested in Europe by Muslim migrants. Have you heard about Beslan? Muslims attacked hudreds of small schoolchildren. Those who attacked these children were real cowards, afraid of facing the adults who had possibly wronged them. I don’t see where it is an insult to say the truth about these cowardly people who are attacking defenseless schoolchildren.

Personally: if Trump gets the nomination, I may not necessarily try to help him beat Hillary, but I can promise you I won’t help Hillary to beat him. To me that would be stabbing the GOP in the eye. :o
I think it is worse for the GOP if Trump becomes the President. They will be seen as responsible for all of his actions. The lost the Senate and House under Bush and gained it back under Obama.

If Trump is the nominee he could cut them off from minorities for a generation if he has not already done that let alone is if he wins.

Frankly I am ready for a new party.

Yes there are bad Muslims but you cannot lump them all together. Think about the Pakistanian Doctor who helped us get Ben Ladin. There have been Muslims who hid our troops in war areas. There are a lot of good Muslims and these people are crucial towards defeating Isis. Saying Muslims hate us is not true and only helps ISIS with recruitment.

Remember the Muslim who risked his life to save some of the Jews customers in France?

Of course there are good Muslims. I am not sure that it is wise for America to risk having a tragedy like happened at Beslan. where over a thousand people were taken hostage. How many hundreds of defenseless schoolchildren died a horrible death because of the Beslan massacre? Can you tell us how you would guarantee that this would not happen in America? Are you concerned about the safety of innocent schoolchildren? People are afraid of these cowards attacking their children and so are leaning toward the solution of Mr. Trump. Further, people see what has happened in Europe. It is all over the internet and there are all kinds of videos on you tube. How would you protect American schoolchildren from an attack by jihadists?

IMO, Trump’s rhetoric about Islam/Muslims has been neither much better nor much worse than Obama’s rhetoric about Islam/Muslims.

Alright, as long as it is in place of the Democratic Party.

🙂 But seriously, I’m not ready to say goodbye to the GOP. It certainly is suffering a lot during the election, but I believe we will recover.

I believe it will rebound.

Yes, the GOP would in theory over time, approximately a 20 year period, another generation or two, recover from Trump. The sad thing is they were already on the road to recovery. The Tea Party wing energized the base and created a fault line between the so-called establishment (more moderate) and the outsiders. These things take time; they don’t just happen: Rubio and Cruz, both former Tea Party favorites, were well-positioned to take over the leadership (peacefully, orderly, coherently, naturally) of the GOP as the next generation. The identity and basic principles of the party would remain intact and the new renovated outsider version of the GOP was poised to take the White House. Again, a bloodless revolution. Rubio, in particular, recognized the need for the GOP to redefine and expand its base appeal. Social conservatism in this model is alive and well. Trump derailed this.

Trump plays up anger to the angry base. So does Sanders. The middle and working class (a huge number of Americans) have endured years of wage stagnation and increased cost of living, loss of jobs overseas, underemployment, unemployment. They are in panic mode, and justly so. I am in this group, as are most of us. The fact that a former liberal billionaire has come along to feed off this rage and promise us populism is not surprising, if a bit ironic. The larger concern is that we now have two large, organized wings of dissatisfied, disenfranchised Americans on either extreme side of the spectrum. Black/white racism, xenophobia, hostility to Christian, Muslims. The natives are restless.

One silver lining: Trump has exposed the Tea Party’s Achilles Heel - Reaganomics - for the middle and lower classes. If we are going to save the democratic process and structure of government under the Constitution, we need to manage and incorporate these dissatisfied groups into the system and address the fundamental economic and social injustices that are fracturing us and creating such inequality, rage. We need to dislodge militant left political correctness in education, law, media, business. Go back to genuine, informed tolerance and equal opportunity - socially, culturallly and economically. And, again, we need something a little more helpful than “Reagonomics” or “socialism.” Compromise here too.

No matter who is elected - Clinton, Cruz, Kasich - they must work to the center to diffuse this tension and toward income and social equality - again, with an eye on demilitarizing the far left and far right: learn from this Trump/Sanders fiasco - recognize the damage the Obama administration has done in alienating the ‘White Lives Matter’ types and the undeniable attacks on Christianity, traditional values. Black Lives Matter and White Lives Matter are not going away. Get rid of what is creating these movements.

Trump is unelectable and must be stopped - not an option. He is unethical, incompetent, and pouring gasoline on this fire. This country’s worst nightmare right about now. Let’s ‘do Trump’ *within the system. * Properly.

I know that’s what I thought. I thought Trump would be an entertaining diversion who might end up messing things up for the GOP by running third party after his inevitable loss. I never imagined he would actually win the nomination outright.
Or the presidency? Yikes!

Excellent post, one of the best I’ve read 👍

If trump is unelectable, then he doesn’t need to be stopped. He will stop himself, or voters will stop him. Oxymoron?
I think they were speaking of the general election–not the primaries. He is obviously winning in the primaries–though I think many would say he would not be winning of the field had been narrower all along.

I don’t believe Democrats who voted for Trump in the primaries will vote for him in the general. I think he has motivated people to cast a lot of strategic votes.

Well, John MacCain, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan were very electable. We were told by the republican party and the media so. What ever happened to their presidencies?
