Mickey,

You have darted my question to you.

Is it ok for a family to have a stay at hom dad while mom works?

Is it ok for a mom to work?

It’s very telling that you haven’t yet responded to my question asked earlier twice.
Yes, many fathers now stay-at-home, and as I said above, they find they love the rewards of raising children. Personally, I believe the ideal situation is for Mothers to be at home, yet Fathers can do it well too.

There are important fundamental differences. A Mother who works fulltime will often feel fullfilled doing the work, yet they also feel a huge tug on their hearts to be with their children even if their husband is at home. For men, they too feel fullfilled working, but they rarely feel a tug on their hearts to be at home with their children if they know their wife is there.

I agree, yet in some cases today fathers find themselves in a position to raise the children. In doing so, they find the amazing reward behind that vocation.
God bless you!!! You love God and it comes across beautifully in your text. You do not discriminate against women…you see the family unit as a whole. Families decide together what is best for their children.

It is ideal if the family can afford it. I live in Toronto and it’s too expensive for me to stay home. We need my salary.

Some women are not that nuturing. They are typically more nuturing than men, but there are exceptions. God gives us all unique gifts.

Thank you for the kind words.

I agree completely. Families must decide and I just hope they decide with God as their primary focus. In many cases couples simply cannot afford to have a parent at home. In other cases the wife can earn more, so the husband stays home, and in other cases the husband earns more so the wife stays home. I feel children do better with one parent at home, and ideally that would be the Mom, but the Dad can do well too. The least attractive situation is when both Mom and Dad have to work fulltime. However, in the end, the couple must choose together, I just pray that place God at the center of their choices. 🙂

We cross posted…see #420. LOL 🙂

THIS!!! 👍 THIS sums up the Catholic Church’s view very beautifully.

There is a difference. I applaud you.

Edit to add:

Single moms are definitely working for all the right reasons. They need our support more than anyone else!

Yes, single Moms (and Dads) often have an amazing burden. I feel if people just started focusing on God, placing Him at the center, than they will make the correct choices. But, of course, that is a story as old as humanity.

The mother has a special bond with her children having carried them in her womb. The most Holy Theotokos is our great example. St Joseph was the carpenter…not St Mary.

Yes. A stay-at-home mom has the most difficult job known to mankind

There are many posts here at once. Please have a bit of patience.

I’ve lived in Toronto in the past. It is very expensive, but at the same time, we made great sacrafices so that I could stay home and eventually made the decision to leave the city.

I’m not in any way saying you shouldn’t work, but I am saying that if you truly desire to be home, there are ways to make it happen. As parents we all have to make sacrifices to do what is best for our children.

Again, not saying you shouldn’t work, but there are usually ways in a two income family to cut back if it is the true desire of BOTH the mother and father for one parent to be home.

  1. Best case, Mom stays at home, Dad works to support the family.
  2. Second best case, Mom works to support family, Dad stays at home to care for kids.

Dear AngryAtheist,

Hello again and thankyou for the above.

Sacred Scripture, dear friend, does not condone slavery and I recall that we discussed this topic on a previous thread.
St. Paul could say that “there is neither bond nor free…for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3: 28), without loudly and imprudently proclaiming emancipation from the rooftops. What he did was to lay down such principles as would at once mitigate the lot of slaves and finally lead to the abolishing of slavery itself wherever Christian civilisation has had leavening effect. To have argued for the sudden destruction of an institution that had become so much a part of the social fabric, would have been decidedly unwise and would have elicited much hostility and persecution against nascent Church.

Warmest good wishes,

You were wrong then and you remain wrong now.
According to the Bible Saint Paul said:

Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, not only while being watched in order to please them, but with a sincere heart, fearing the Lord
-Colossians 3

Now people have admittedly interpreted this passage a lot of different ways. But if we interpret the Bible as literally as possible (a position you have advocated in this very thread) then Saint Paul was clearly endorsing the authority of slave masters and therefore the institution of slavery itself.

That did not illustrate your “point” at all. ** I thought the post was quite insightful**.
Do you agree with the Catholic Planet article on the role of women?
Because that’s what Portrait was endorsing.

Thanks. We cannot move as we bought a house with my husband’s family so that we can assist in the care of my sick mother-in-law. It’s complicated 🙂

Our family arrangement is working well although, it may not be ideal.

Ok thanks for your honesty. You just lost credibility with me, so I’ll take your future comments lightly.

Our world view highly influences how we interpret scriptures.

I agree with number one. And I agree with the post by heart4home that “if you truly desire to be home, there are ways to make it happen.”

Having said that, we are all given freewill and must make decisions based upon a properly formed conscience.

Well you are certainly teaching your children one of the greatest lessons, that so many do not learn, in caring for your ailing mother in law. God is faithful to those who love Him and seek to serve Him. You obviously are.

God Bless.

So be it.
In the Catholic and Orthodox Church…Holy Tradition and the Fathers of the Church interpret Sacred Scriptures.
so did Pope JP II in his “Letter to Women”.

again, personal world views determine how we interpret scriptures.
