Time to give the women a pay raise

FIFA rules require that all member nations have an opportunity to qualify for the Continental Cups and the FIFA World Cup unless under sanction by FIFA. Thus, the top teams from the Caribbean are entitled to play the US and Mexico, even if they don’t stand a chance. Actually, it’s a good deal for the small countries, as it lets them bring in substantial revenue. Besides, they have to earn the right to play the elite teams.

(Can this thread just die since the OP has been suspended- I suspect for goading?)

In terms of viewers and bringing in revenue the women have not out performed the men. There is more to organized sports than simply the sport… it is a business and a very lucrative one at that.

And that will never happen. Football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and far down the ladder is men’s soccer. So we may as well embrace women’s soccer.

This is confusing. Who says someone can’t embrace women’s soccer? But I got to be honest, I would rather watch the best players in the world play in one of the Europeans leagues than watch any Americans play (male or female).

To me, I don’t see gender. I want to watch the best in the world at the sport. I don’t enjoy watching lower levels of play, I want to watch the best.

That why when watching floor gymnastics or figure skating- I watch the women. Why: because they are the best.

When watching Beach Volleyball- I prefer to watch the women. Why: because they use the same net and boundaries as the men and they are shorter than the men; yet still play amazingly. So it’s more amazing to watch the women play Beach Volleyball.

That’s also why I have little interest in watching Japanese Baseball or Minor League Baseball. Or watching a last place team in MLB. I want to watch the best.

For me, has nothing to do with gender. Has everything to do with watching the highest level of play that sport has to offer.

BTW - this also why I prefer college basketball over the NBA. While the best players are in the NBA, the level of play in the NBA is pretty terrible because the teams are so unbalanced.

Sure. Pay the women more. Then fine any player who blatantly disrespects our flag and / or national anthem. And fine them heavily.

Jesus told a story about a man who hired laborers throughout the day, and at the end of the day paid them the same wages reagardless of how long they had worked. When those who worked the longest complained, he asked them if he didn’t pay them what they had agreed to?
Yes that is true. But today people do not pay close attention to what Jesus said. Instead, people listen to what the feminists say.

And their governing body has a right to fine and suspend them for disgracing their country, since they represent said country.

The spin is that they were just taking it easy on the boys.
Taking it easy on them by losing decisively to them.
🤣

Great video!

It’s crazy that the Women’s Team (same team that won the 2015 World Cup) lost in 2017 a scrimmage to a 15 and under boys team from Dallas - with a score of 5-2.

Not even the US National 15 and under boys team, a team from just Dallas!

And it’s interesting than in Australia, their women’s national team lost 7-0 to a boys 15 and under team.

So essentially, the US Women’s World Cup Team not only isn’t good enough to play the US Men’s team, they wouldn’t be good enough to play the best 15 and under boys teams…

Be careful for what you wish. Remember Billy Jean King? Riggs sure underestimated her.

I’m not wishing anything. I think the if the US Women’s team thinks they are underpaid and deserve to be on equal footing with the men’s team, then they should challenge the Men to a scrimmage.

If the women win or hold their own then they will have proven that they deserve equal pay. But if the men beat them senseless, then they should shut up and appreciate that they make more playing a game than most people make in a year.

Again, the women challenging and beating the men is 100% irrelevant. 100%.

Athletes make money similar to how an author makes money. By selling what they do to interested audiences. Does this make sense? Winning is an aspect of that but the level of competition is the more relevant aspect. A person who transfers from the minor leagues to the major leagues might start losing a lot more, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to get paid less (just the opposite) and it doesn’t mean a minor league team should get equal pay because they win more often within their league.

Women’s International Football does not have even remotely the level of competition that the men’s does, and it does not attract remotely as much revenue, and that is that. You can say it is unfair that an author who sells a million books gets paid more than one who sells 10,000 books, or that it is unfair that the restaurant who has 100 customers a day makes less than the one who has 200 customers a day, or that it is unfair that female athletes make less, or that it is unfair that male fashion models make less, but all of these things are commercial enterprises that make money by selling what they do.

So if you want equal pay for the women, you either need to tax the American population to make up the difference, or you need to transfer the money that other leagues are making through selling what they do, or you need to promote the sport so that it generates more revenue. Those are the options, more or less.

Last Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final averaged 14.27 million viewers on Fox, which is 22% more than last year’s men’s World Cup final (11.44 million).

I would expect there to be a larger local audience for the team representing that locality. Any guesses as to the audience on Fox if the US men’s team had been playing in the final? Or change that around a bit… What were the relative actual numbers worldwide for those same 2 games?
