Again, the women challenging and beating the men is 100% irrelevant. 100%.
Athletes make money similar to how an author makes money. By selling what they do to interested audiences. Does this make sense? Winning is an aspect of that but the level of competition is the more relevant aspect. A person who transfers from the minor leagues to the major leagues might start losing a lot more, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to get paid less (just the opposite) and it doesn’t mean a minor league team should get equal pay because they win more often within their league.
Women’s International Football does not have even remotely the level of competition that the men’s does, and it does not attract remotely as much revenue, and that is that. You can say it is unfair that an author who sells a million books gets paid more than one who sells 10,000 books, or that it is unfair that the restaurant who has 100 customers a day makes less than the one who has 200 customers a day, or that it is unfair that female athletes make less, or that it is unfair that male fashion models make less, but all of these things are commercial enterprises that make money by selling what they do.
So if you want equal pay for the women, you either need to tax the American population to make up the difference, or you need to transfer the money that other leagues are making through selling what they do, or you need to promote the sport so that it generates more revenue. Those are the options, more or less.
