I already do Lauds, Vespers and Compline out of habit.

Terce, Sext and None, well I usually recite atleast one, sometimes all.

Matins/Office of Readings/Prayer during the day-this has me stumped I don’t know where to stick it, and I kinda wanted to follow the example of the orders that would wake up in the middle of the night to do it. I would settle with just doing it before compline.
Since that office may be recited at any time, you’re fine with that.

now come on - read what has been posted on this thread

Matins = Office of Readings - and can be prayed at any time

As to you waking to read it - now come on - you admit that there are times when you do not wake till the afternoon - so do you really think that you are going to wake during the night and read it ?

Just be thankful you have LOTH and not the Eastern Hours to do .

The waking up in the afternoon thing. Thats cause I’m an insomniac with alot of homework and its during holidays 😃

And, cause a Priest I’ve come to admire has told me to use discretion when it comes to acts of Piety, I probably shouldn’t anyway.

And to repeat, I’m not sure what the heck this office is. Its technical name is “Prayer during the day” in the UK version, its just three psalms with antiphons, is that the Matins/Office of readings?

Thanks for your patience, I just finished a chapter of advanced math 😃 See my tagline for the reason.

“Prayer during the day” sounds like what we call “Daytime Prayer”. You can pray it in different ways. If you are praying daytime prayer only once, the selection of Psalms posted for Daytime Prayer in the Office of the Day is a good choice because it changes daily. For the other hours you use the “Complementary Psalmody” which appears after the office of Night Prayer. This section has the Psalmody for Midmorning, Midday, and Midafternoon prayer – Psalms are the Psalms of ascent (120-128). You may choose to use only these Psalms or you may use the Psalms posted with the Office of the Day for one of the hours. Readings and responsories for the day are listed in the Office of the day.

Aaaaaaah poor Twizted - these students again

OK - watch my lips

Matins = Office of Readings

In the UK 1 Volume book , it is not there except for the Triduum ( Holy Thursday , Great and Holy Friday and Holy Saturday - with apologies for terminology - but with the Priest you mentioned you should be OK with that 😃 😃 😃 )

The Hours you mention , … Prayer before Noon , , Prayer at Midday ( without hunting out my book - buried in a pile of Liturgical stuff - am not too sure of correct name ) and Prayer after Noon equate to 3rd , 6th and 9th Hours.

Office of Readings for the UK only comes in the multi Volume set of the Divine Office BUT IIRC it’s a single Volume so if you are desperate to get it you can buy the 1 volume on it’s own - look it up on www.Amazon.co.uk - NO not dot Com as that will give you the Yank set of Divine Office and once more muddle you ]

Hope that helps a wee bit

I know about the middle hours, I just didn’t know what this office was 'cause its only 3 psalms, and set out differently to the office of readings done on Christmas eve.

Its called prayer during the day, so to make it reallly easy, is it Matins? That limits the needed response to one word. Yes or No. The responder may expand according to how they want, I just feel like I’m being troublesome, so I’m trying to make it easier.

Poor feller 😃

I think we’re having some mismatched frequencies. The reason it’s confusing people is because there’s really no office in the Yank edition called “Prayer during the day”.

Perhaps to make it easier, maybe you can give out the Antiphons and Psalm numbers for Tuesday, Week III (today) of the Office in question. We’ll try to match it to the US Breviary.

Ant 1
Love is the fullness of the Law

Psalm 118 (119)
Lord, how I love your law!*
It is ever in my mind.
etc

Ant 2
Remember your people, Lord, whome you chose long ago.

Psalm 73(74)
Why, O God, have you cast us off for ever?*
Why blaze with anger at the sheep of your pasture?

Ant 3
Arise, O Lord and dedend your cause.

II(I think this means it continues from the last Psalm, I can’t check just now.)

It was you who divided the sea by your might,*
who shattered the heads of the monsters in the sea.

There you go. Now what in the name of Benedict is all this stuff? Please tell me its matins (as I’ve guessed) so I can just stick it infront of Compline and be done with it.

What times should all the different offices be prayed? I tend to pray morning after I wake up (which is sometimes afternoon) coupled with the appropriate prayer for the time. And then evening before midnight, and compline before I sleep.

What are the official times?
pray for the time of day where you live. If you wake at noon, pray the office for mid-day. You can pray evening prayer whenever it is evening, more or less 6-7 oclock. You can pray night prayer just before you go to bed, no matter what time it is, or at midnight if you work nights. If you are not up in the morning, don’t worry about morning prayer. Office of readings can be said any time.

If it works better to adjust the schedule to your own workday, that is fine, too, when you are praying privately, but there is no need to, you can just office for the actual time of day.

Twiz,

Sorry to disappoint. That’s Daytime Prayer, not Matins. Those psalms are what you pray when you say one of the hours of Terce, Sext, or None (Midmorning, Midday, or Midafternoon).

If you’re looking for Matins, look in your Table of Contents for the Office of Readings. Please note, though, that you will need to 3-volume to have the full texts.

For your reference, the Office of Readings antiphons and psalms for today, Tuesday, Week III are:

Ant. 1. Let God arise, let his enemies flee before him

Psalm 68

Let God arise, let his foes be scattered.
Let those who hate him flee before him…

Ant. 2. Our God is a saving God; he, the Lord, holds the keys of death.

II. (Continuation)

The Lord gives the word to the bearers of good news…

Ant. 3. Kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to God, make music in honor of the Lord.

III. (Continuation).

They see your solemn procession, O God…

These are from the Yank edition, but your antiphons shouldn’t be too far off.

it should not be something to worry about, but something to do with joy and love (even when you don’t feel like it or don’t have time for it). The best advice I can give a student is that if you consecrate an hour a day to prayer, and if you recite morning and evening prayer, night prayer, and the office of readings with time for reflection and meditation, that will be about an hour, all the rest of your time will be used well and be fruitful. If you neglect prayer, nothing else will go right during the day, and you will just get busier and busier with less to show for it.

Twizted

You really are going to get more and more confused if you try and work from different approved versions of the Office.

Stick to UK OR Yank - the terminology and organisation is different.

Stop fretting and just do what you can.

If you really want to know about Matins - try asking a certain Australian Priestmonk - and then be thankful what is expected of you

Thanks for all your help. How’d you guess I was an Aussie? 😃

I guess I’m just a little scrupioulous. I mean, if we aren’t who’s gonna be? :o

Anyway, I’ll keep all your suggestions in mind.

Keep me in your prayers please (still got 6 chapters of math to do before next week 😦 )

Actually Twiz should stick to the UK edition if he’s in Australia, so that he can pray the Office as approved by his Bishops.

Yeah - we know that and Twizted knows that - but he was getting Yank advice based on Yank books - and all that was doing was getting the poor wee overworked stressed student more confused.
