Leviticus 27:30-34 clearly states what is the Lord’s (tithing).

If you say unless, you give me further reason why I had to leave the Catholic church. Or its your personal agenda to interpret the scriptures ways that please you versus what they actually say.
We also don’t make a bloody sacrifice of the firstborn if our pet cat has kittens. We don’t keep Saturday holy. We eat pork and shellfish. Jesus abolished many mosaic laws. Any New Testament proclamations?

This LDS bishop can not pick and choose who receives help and who does not ---- Jesus Christ did not pick and choose so this bishop needs to be released from his duties, if what you state is true.

This what this ENTIRE thread is about. A LDS bishop has told a 91 year old woman (with little control of her finances because she’s in assisted living) she must tithe or else she will lose her salvation—while offering her NO way to meet that obligation.

I will put myself in the shoes of this lady. I would want the blessings of keeping the commandment and keeping the faith as a result. It would be wrong if the bishop decided, which by the way he could not do for anyone else, who can pay less in tithing or more. A full tithe is just that.

Again, those in assisted living have little control over their funds. It may be legally impossible for her to make this without some sort of financial assistance. The Bishop can’t change the law, but he CAN be merciful and say that the church will step in and care for her needs financially so she can make the tithe. I know this for a fact because I know young Mormons who were in a similar situation and the LDS church covered their expenses at the rate of 3 or 4 times the amount they tithed.

It is NOT church teaching, in any way, shape or form, to simply threaten salvation.

Why can’t you admit what this bishop did was wrong without the caveat that you’d be better somehow?

I do not know all the actual facts (never will since I am not him) — further bishops can do things to assist folks who have financial challenges, as those request it. They ask for the help.

Again keeping commandments that bishop or I can not pick and choose what commandments to keep or not keep.

The facts we know is that an elderly lady DID ask for help. Perhaps she approached the question wrong, but it is clear she’s in dire straits. Again, even in the LDS faith, it is inappropriate to threaten salvation. It’s wrong. Period.

You are dead set on acting exactly like Jesus warned against when speaking to the saugesees and Pharisees.

Is there actual evidence of such a threat? I don’t it.

Regardless, this bishop would not stop someone from receiving all the blessings for the commandment.

What? This isn’t about blessings, it’s about the basic human right to food, clothing, housing and medical care.

Finally an LDS person admits a pay to play scheme within the LDS organization.

God asks so little of us with keeping the commandments, including payment of tithing so why should she be any different? If she does this, she will be blessed.
“Do this and you will be blessed” is good. “Do this or we’ll kick you out of church” is not.

Read your Bible ---- I thought Catholics understood tithing — paying 10% of one’s income to the church – or is the collection plate and the I lost count numerous ways to support the church.

That is the commandment. Biblical or have Catholics completely lost all knowledge of things biblical.
We are to contribute to the support of the Church. We don’t recognize a specific command to give 10%, just give as we can.
And it seems less than Biblical to evict someone from the church for being poor.

The people of Israel were required to give a tenth of their increase.
The people of Israel were under the Old Covenant.

Christ gave us the New Covenant, which rescinded some of the old laws. For example we are no longer required to circumcise our boys. We are no longer forbidden to eat pork or shellfish.
We are no longer required to give a tenth of our increase.

EDIT: Can anyone here explain to me how to multiquote? I got a notice with instructions but it didn’t work when I tried to follow them. I assume I’ve misunderstood. Help?

To tithe means to “trust in God”… I’d be scared too if I were a tithing Mormon, but maybe they are like those Churches that create jobs for people if they tithe or something like that.

If I am a tithing Catholic, it is b/c I “trust in God” working through his Church (the Catholic Church) and to some extent the “not in full communion” but baptized protestants.

What a person gives in a form of monetary contributions is up to the individual. No one is checking up on anyone and most Catholics view what and how much they give as a private affair.

As a general rule of thumb, the Church has repeatedly taught that 5% of ones income should be donated to the parish. An additional 5% should be given to charities and ministries of ones choice. They don’t have to be Catholic charities.

In addition the Church teaches, as Jesus taught, that widows, the poor, the sick and other people in need are the recipients of charity. If a person in such a situation has the means to make charitable donations, then they should, but obviously the woman in the OP’s situation is not able to give as much as she is being directed to give. We are to care for people in this situation, help in removing their burdens, and not work towards increasing their burdens.

Keeping a commandment of God is not a “pay to play scheme”.

Bottom line, since some of you twist my words or take out of context, do not like the LDS church.

Admit this to me, if any have the guts — you are former LDS or never LDS members who have a agenda to give what you believe the LDS church is really about.

Spare me and other LDS members on the forums here. Your attacks are not new and frankly will never end in my view.

Where is the word “Tithe” in the Ten Commandments?

Do we have to forgive those who don’t Tithe?

Besides, giving money is only one way of tithing, and it’s not the only way.

Where in the New Testament is the commandment to tithe 10%? Your words were not twisted. You said (paraphrasing) that one must pay the 10% tithe in order to be blessed. I do not like the LDS organization due to the falsehoods they spread, and the inequality they practice.

And please do not bring out your old and tired comment of how you will never give up LDS. I don’t have any agenda except to participate in discussions on a Catholic forum. If you feel so attacked, why are you here? I understand anyone can join and dialogue on any one of these forums but it seems to me you are the one with an agenda.

Tex, I have freely admitted that while I am not LDS I have a great respect for them.

I know what GOOD LDS bishops do for their people. The fact is that a GOOD LDS bishop would understand that not being able to make a tithe comes from a spot of desperation and offer that person the means to make the tithe without embarrassing them. How do I know this? I saw it in action, many, many times among my peers. As they left college and could barely scrape by with summer jobs the church truly came to their rescue in a way I’ve not seen the Catholic church manage.

A Bishop who does not help his people is indeed, going to appear as if he’s in a “pay to play” scheme.

You continue to defend someone who is legislatively right, but sounding morally bankrupt. Saying that if you were a 91-year-old lady with no control over your bills you would find a way to tithe–no help needed–because you know God would make it right. This woman went to her Bishop. HE is obligated to help her meet the tenents of her faith, not to create worry that she will be punished for not meeting them.

If anyone has made the LDS faith look bad, its this bishop, but moreso you standing behind this bishop who shows a complete lack of charity and Mormon values.

I don’t see one person on here who has asked any question that’s not in good faith or without good reason. I have not seen one person on here criticize the Mormon faith as a whole, but rather the heartlessness and sheer wickedness of a Bishop who’s frightening an old lady.

In the Old Testament (not the ten commandments) 4 scriptures I will cite about tithing ---- again tithing is clear before you response back to me and say no it is not ---- tithing is clear
  • Genesis 14:18-20
  • Leviticus 27:30-34
  • Deuteronomy 14:22
  • Malachi 3:8-11
If you misinterpret these scriptures, this explains to me why tithing is not the Lord’s law of finance in most churches, including Catholicism.

Payment of tithing is a commandment — this notion of forgiving ---- have that make sense, if you will??? God gives us everything and so payment of tithing, is more than just paying it, it shows our faith in his gospel.

Hello Tex,
Code:
In what ways does your practice of the law of tithing correspond
with the instructions given with regards to the law of tithing as defined in the bible?
