It’s God’s money, not ours, actually, cristiano. We should discern where ‘His’ money is going. If I were giving my money faithfully, and found out that the priest was giving part of the collections to Planned Parenthood, for example, (wild exaggeration, but just follow this)…I wouldn’t want to give to that Church, and further.

Why do you think it’s bad to receive a financial statement from the church? My parish does it, and it wouldn’t do it if it were wrong.

I do not think that it is a bad idea at all. It might even give a better sense of security to some parishoners. I disagree that we have a right to ask for it. The Catholic Church structure has already an internal system of control that prevents widespread abuse. We will always see some form of abuse like in any private or public structure that handles money and/or some form of power. Remember Monsignor Marcinkus in 1982? Maybe I am at a point in my life where I realized and came to accept the fact that I cannot control and/or understand the full extend of the world where I live in. Maybe now I am more willing to accept the risk of other people faults and mistakes than I was in the past. I just believe that God has a plan and that I will never fully understand it.

Are we supposed to pay the TITHE as catholics? TITHE is a technical term in the bible. Or aren’t we supposed to support the church charitably based on our own consciences? Can you differentiate between the two and what are we supposed to keep? And can you please give me references from catholic sources if we have to keep the tithe. thanks

Hi Cid. This is an old thread, but in answer to your question: no, Catholics are not required to tithe (give 10% of their income). They are, however, required to give as much as they can. For a lot of us, this would be far more than 10%, and for some of us, it would be less.

Here’s a link to Jimmy Akin’s blog post regarding this subject: Tithing and Giving Recommends.

The answer was also posted in the Ask an Apologist forum in October: Must Catholics give ten percent of their income in tithe?

Thank you for your reply and for the links. You have been most helpful. I wanted to know. An evangelical friend of mine insists that we pay the tithe. I was wondering if it holds true for us catholics. Thank you for your answers. God Bless.
